Picking the right actress for the job is indeed an art.

As you pointed out, Yael was going for Nicky but was brought back for Lorna.

We've seen in many interviews that Laura was trying out for Piper "even though the actress knew she was wrong for the part... and brought back as Alex.

Uzo said she tried out for 1 role (did she say which??) but was brought back for "sweet" Suzanne/Crazy Eyes.

IIRC Lea was trying out for the role of a guard and came back as Big Boo.

The other thing that has struck me over many interviews, was that the actress was often told she'd be there for a limited role 1-2 eps, but something caught TPTB's imagination and the roles blossomed (Lorna Morello & Taystee are 2 that come to mind.)

I think the act of upgrading several cast members to "regular" status is basically job security. I don't think it means 1 character will overwhelm the story line, but I suspect its a way to wrap up the actress for a defined period of time.

Surprise surprise. Yael Stone's brother puts that picture up on the top of the interview, but balks at asking her about the cunnilingus scenes. Seriously, though, that was a nice interview.

I really liked those radio interviews. Maybe they can get more actors to go on now and go into some spoiler territory. I was kind of amused at Jason's justification of the characterization of Larry being that no one knows who Larry Smith is.

Natasha Lyonne on "The View"

She mostly talks about her struggle with addiction.  And on a shallow note, her hair looks fantastic!

So here are my additions for today's to OITNB media topic:

Laura Prepon talks with TV Guide: "Piper Is Just as Toxic as Alex": http://www.tvguide.c...er-1069067.aspx

Boston Globe: "'Orange' Addicts Unite": http://www.bostonglo..._campaign=sm_tw  Matthew Gilbert shares our pain

And this little nugget:

WebPro News: "'Orange Is The New Black' Is Being Searched For More Than All Other Netflix Shows Combined" [Bing]: http://www.webpronew...ed-bing-2013-08

Perhaps Netflix underplaying the promotion (as compared to "HoC" and "AD") worked in OITNB's favor; seems like everyone feels as if they've found it for themselves and aren't being told we'll like it and thus feel more personally invested (hence the searching for more info). It also helps that, ya know, it's really fuckin' good.

Loved the Globe review and its final warning...

But heed this warning: The TV Surgeon General has determined that fast ingestion of “Orange” episodes may lead to fatigue, emptiness, and withdrawal. Proceed at your own risk.

Really loved the Prepon interview.

Can it be that OitNB only started streaming ONE MONTH AGO??????

God, that means we have 11 more to go before season 2 begins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Really interesting Prepon interview. If she sees Alex as the victim of her situation, it explains a lot about how she plays the character.

I've really been enjoying the individual cast interviews, and am just sad they missed Comic Con with this show, because it would be really cool to see a bunch of the cast on one panel.  Maybe they'll do Paleyfest next year...

Love the new review in Rolling Stone. This show is getting all kinds of really positive press from every corner of the media. Particularly like this:

Taylor Schilling, in what's sure to be her break-out role, plays Piper Chapman

and this:

In fact, if Kohan, Schilling and Kate Mulgrew (playing Galina "Red" Reznikov) aren't already Emmy locks for next year, there's something wrong with the system. Add in buzz for Natasha Lyonne, Uzo Aduba and Taryn Manning, and you've got a certified hit on your hands.

No need to apologize, better safe than sorry is what I say, although I'm sure that's a new one for us, so good job!

Speaking of a "new one", I FINALLY found an article about the opening credits.  :-)

It's interesting to learn that all of the photos are of "real" formerly incarcerated women, one of whom IS the author... Piper Kerman.

I love the framing of the Laura question. It wasn't whether the news was true or not...just how did the news affect the dynamic. Hard to dodge.

And, call me cynical, but I can't believe that NO ONE on the set is talking about it.
It seems like it was/is an elephant in the room.

At least one report claimed that Prepon's storyline is wrapped up in the premiere, which seems to be debunked by this interview, since Manning clearly is familiar with that episode and yet claims Prepon hasn't been on set [which I believe is true] and she doesn't know what's going on with her story.  So now it's seeming like whatever she'll film will be for a bit later in the season.

That may not be debunked since they may not shoot everything in sequence. Recall, Pablo is/was off filming Ironsides in LA (?) while OitNB was filming in  NYC.

Then again, maybe they send her away and bring her back several eps later (a'la Taystee) when we least expect it.
