This show was going for a very specific angle: the spoiled, Jewish, North Shore, Daddy will take care of me until I find a husband type girl. They were cast as walking, talking stereotypes. Basically, Andy Cohen went out and got a cast of mini Jill Zarins.
That being said, not every girl on the show fits that exact mold...and most girls on Long Island aren't like this. As much as it pains me to say it, the realtor wasn't having trouble finding apartments that could be shown on TV; $900-1200 a month on Long Island doesn't go far at all.
For those of you unfamiliar with this area, it's one of the most expensive places in the country to live. Not only that, but it was the birthplace of suburbia. Long Island does NOT have many rental communities, and many times when one tries to move into a neighborhood, it's immediately voted down by residents who think that it will bring "certain people" into the neighborhood. There are a handful of apartment complexes, the rest of the apartments on Long Island are illegal apartments in the basements of private homes. It's expensive here, and there's also just a shortage of things to rent.
I'm 28, most of my friends went to law school or grad school, and many wound up moving back in with their parents for a few years or more after college. Joey is not the exception to the norm here. Is it fun? No. Is it looked down upon as much here as it is other parts of the country? No.
I lived in Florida after undergrad, and my rent for a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment was about $900 a month (before splitting with my roommate). I just checked, and rent appears to have gone up to $1100 in the past few years. That same apartment leasing company has a handful of complexes on Long Island. A ONE bedroom here, their cheapest, is currently renting for $2170. We're not talking luxury apartments either, this would be a typical complex in any other part of the country. Are there cheaper apartments? Yeah, and they're either a) illegal apartments in someone's home b) much older apartments or c) what you saw Joey looking at.
So while I really, really hate to defend Joey...Long Island is not young adult/renter friendly.
She should, however, be more appreciative that her dad has been supportive of her Kissamint BS. Not excusing the way he speaks to her, though. He is either a jerk, or he is tired of footing the bill for her business that isn't going anywhere and is fed up.
