God all of the guys just really suck this year. I was glad Nicki was acting all crazy; I was bored to tears by all the mediocre singing. Nobody stood out, unless of course you count Zoanette. That girl is very special.
On another note, my new favorite thing is Mariah's stink face whenever Nicki says, well, anything, but especially when she flirts. I don't think they've looked at each other once since this thing started.
This will be the last season of this dumb show.

Meh. I didn't really care for any of the guys who made it through last night, not even Randy Jackson Jr. (Vincent?) The talent seemed mediocre at best, and even guys I liked in the past, like Nick, were disappointing. This show is quickly going down the toilet, but sadly, I'll probably continue to watch.

I've more than had my fill of Nicki and her fake accents, side-eye and general obnoxiousness. I find her so annoying that last night I almost wished J. Lo. was still around talking about having "goosies." Pretty sad.

Here's hoping things improve when America gets to start voting. I don't think the judges have much credibility right now, based on their choices.

Vincent/Papa Smurf – Holy crap! Where did that come from?! That’s what Curtis Finch dreams of being. Dude has velvet tone, great arrangement with fantastic vocal transitions, grit to spare… damn. Best guy so far and possibly the best performance of the entire Top 40, hands down.

Yes!!!! That's what I'm talking about....I could not believe I was hearing what I was hearing....I had to listen to it twice somebody doing Lenny Williams....and killing it!

If Fox cancels it for low ratings, the black network BET would probably love to pick it up.

Not sure what point you are trying to make, but after last year, I think it's about time there are plenty of black contestants.

4 blacks
2 Hispanics
1 Asian
2 gay white guys
1 geeky white guy

And do you don't think there are other gay people in the top twenty...wow!

Anybody who didn't get what Vincent did clearly has no clue what REAL R&B is....and that's cool because I have not idea what REAL County is. All I know is if he continues to sing like that, he will have my vote, and believe me the last time I voted was season 2.

Also, I absolutely love, Mariah's expression when Nicki talks.....because I know exactly what is going through her head...bytch shut up!

I'm happy to have some African American girls representing this year as they didn't seem to find any the last couple of seasons. And while I may not agree with every single judge choice I didn't see any great injustice (well I wouldn't have picked Zoanette). Josh was mediocre at best so he doesn't deserve a spot over others that made it. There are a few people that have a leg up on all the other contestants and the only black singers that fall into that category are Candace and Curtis (although some of his time wasn't positive). Most of the rest were virtual strangers when they sang in the sudden death round and will have a harder time gaining a footing with the voting public.

Can't wait to see how the season plays out and who rises to the top.

This top 40 round is never shown in full. We always only see the highlights. I wouldn't assume the entire season is already figured out.

Doubtful.

There hasn't been an AA winner since S6 (and she was biracial). IDOL's recent focus has been in promoting WGWG's and/or Country singers. Neither are what I would describe as BET's core viewership. IMO last season's blatant omission of AA female singers in the group of finalists was an indication (to me) that TPTB have no real intention of investing in R&B/Urban artists in any meaningful way going forward. Besides, Black Entertainment Television is not the catch-all dumping ground for every show that fails on network TV.

There is always so much BS associated with this show that I am used to it by now and gave up on watching - live - the audition rounds a few years ago, then last year I skipped Hollywood and Las Vegas. I watched on-line the last two weeks of performances. I may end up watching the whole show that way this year because I truly do not care for Nicki and her accents or a judging panel of four. I thought the three of the last two years was so much better.

I guess I need my eye candy when it comes to the boys, and I am not seeing that this year. Nick looks pale and sickly, like one of those poor kids I see on commercials for Saint Jude's hospital. I like Lazaro but his song this week was awful. So many of the other guys look so old and none are very attractive. There are a few good voices though - definitely Vincent.

I will be shocked if any of the guys make the top five, but I am sure one or two will pull through. This reminds me of the year of the three divas when Fantasia won. And Jennifer Hudson's amazing career began. It is time for a female winner, that is the one thing I can agree with Nigel about. I will finally be watching live this coming week and hoping to be surprised - in a good way.

Stick to discussing the show, please, and don't analyze the opinions of the boards or tell each other how to feel/post. Don't respond to posts doing this, either. It's talking about the boards on the boards, which is against our site rules.

Yes, this is how I feel, for the first time in years, I'm kinda excited about the live show....last year was the first year I didn't watch the live show because of the female choices, and just plain sick of Jennifer Lopez, and while I'm not a fan of Nicki, I hope she is watching this and sees how she is definitely not Simon even with the fake accent....LOL!

In general I'd agree but I think Cortez Shaw is movie star handsome.

I loved Burnell's performance. He's one I'm eager to see next week.

My predictions for the Top 10:

It's probably easier to pick who will get eliminated (there are some really obvious ones who will get booted):
Girls:
Teena will no doubt get booted- she is too stuck in the '80s.

Aubrey/Breanna- good looking fodder with average voices

Possibly Zoanette- not a lot of people like her, but perhaps Vote for the Worst might keep her in
If one of the Aubrey/Breanna duo stays or if Zoanette stays, I can also picture Janelle getting booted because many people seem to think Rachel Hale should have taken her place, a lot of people seem to find her the "boring, blonde country singer"

However it pans out, I definitely believe Candice, Angela, and Kree are shoe-ins for the Top 5 girls.

Boys:
Curtis has a high chance of getting the boot- they already have Vincent to fill the "gospel church singer" quota and he has a more likable personality than Curtis. He no doubt has a good voice but it's very clear that many people are turned off by not only how he acted in Hollywood Week but also that he seems very smug while he performs. I really doubt there's room for both Curtis and Vince in this competition (and I think the judges knew that Curtis would probably get the boot, hence why they chose Vince to replace him)

Paul Jolley- if he doesn't start stepping it up, I could see people not voting for him

Nick- same deal as Paul- if he doesn't start stepping it up, he may get booted too

Elijah is a very small possibility- he has the look, but the voice isn't really there. He might be saved by all the tween Beliebers

Cortez- while he gave a solid performance in the Vegas rounds, I don't know... some people may still remember that awful Whitney rendition he did before. I know it still sticks in my brain.

Charlie- as sorry as I am to say that because he's my favorite, sadly he doesn't seem to be a favorite of many other people. But he does seem to have a solid fanbase and I for sure will vote for him as much as I can, there is a chance he could leave prematurely.

The only definite shoe-ins I see here are Devin and Lazaro. Maybe Vincent too but he also has the "old man" look going on, unless those 40 and 50-year-olds Nicki was talking about vote for him, I don't see who would be connecting with him enough to get him through.

For the Final 5 I predict it's going to be 3 girls and 2 guys (if even that many).

Devin is my favorite guy thus far. I really really like his soulful voice plus I love the fact that he may sing in spanish some of the time. I'm hoping the sob story kids go e.g. Lazaro who is mediocre singer at best. I'll stay open minded though. Some of these kids WILL surprise us.

Now we've had all 4 semi-finals, what's really struck me is that this was the last opportunity these contestants would have to make their own song choices from scratch, as opposed to adhering to the weekly theme, and they all pretty much all chose the dullest songs imaginable. I hate TPTB's pushing of Zoanette into the final, but at least it was an interesting choice of song; the rest were just snooze-worthy...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the theme weeks start until the Top 10 are chosen. And I really wish they'd do away with the themes, it's always more interesting when contestants get to pick their own songs, even if most of them end up picking ballads.

I do too, but I think the theme weeks this season are going to be a disaster. With the types of contestants they have this year I don't think any of them will have the ability to sing well outside their original genre.

Well, that could be entertaining, too, in a train wreck kind of way! In any event, it will separate the wheat from the chaff. I think it's too soon to count everyone out; there could be some contestants this year who have enough imagination and creativity to do something with a song beyond reproducing the original artist's vision. David Cook with "Hello" and "Billie Jean," and Adam Lambert with "Ring of Fire" and "If I Can't Have You" were prime examples of stunning artistry when it comes to adapting a song to their own style, and there have been others too. As Simon used to complain, there are some contestants who just do karaoke. I appreciate the ones who make an effort to be original in their presentation and I look forward to seeing if anyone this year can stand out from the crowd.

If they're going to do theme weeks, they need to stay away from 1960s night, Queen songs, or Whitney Houston. They should at least do something more current and artists that are not as famous/legendary as Queen/Whitney/Stevie Wonder/The Beatles, etc.

I used to think I'd prefer no theme weeks and letting the contestants pick any song they wanted, but they tend to pick such awful, boring songs. Also, I find I enjoy the show more when I know the songs. That's much more likely to happen with theme weeks.

I thought the original plan for the theme weeks was exactly because it's a karaoke show, or theoretically, to show the contestants' versatility. Personally, I prefer it that way, instead of contestants "tailoring" songs of a certain genre to suit their performance style. If it's "country" night, I want a freakin' country show; if it's "big band" night, I want that kind of music as well. I can't stand another season of Lee DeWyze arranging everything into a mumbly, slow, pop-rock jam.

I agree, Airy Pits. If someone can successfully tailor a song to their own style within a week, then I'm fine with that, but I'm just as happy with a really good karaoke version, too. It's hard to change up a song in a week and I really hate having to sit through the unsuccessful ones, so I say don't pressure them to "make it their own"--let them sing it however they are comfortable with it.

In this episode IIRC, Keith and Randy (and probably Mariah as well) were fond of commenting that a contestant, "made it his/her own." God, I hate that almost always. Take a fast song, make it slow and vice versa. The only make it your own that blew me away, and still does, is Adam Lambert's, "Ring of Fire." Also, I'm so sick of the ballads they're choosing. sheesh.

So, shows with predominately black people on it should only be on BET? Anyway, that's not even what Idol has been this season.
