Melinda – If I never hear Jessie J done on IDOL again this season I’ll be happy. Jessie J is the new Adele, apparently. Melinda showed signs of great pop star potential and got the bad taste out of my mouth regarding last week’s men.

I must call attention to the complete and utter bullshit Nicki comment “do someone other than Jessie J,” especially after Nicki compared Melinda to Angela. We’ve seen Angela do Jessie J three freaking times thus far and she didn’t have that issue with Angela last week.

Candice – She got screamy towards the end, but I can’t deny that she’s got a powerhouse voice, was easily better than all of the girls from last week sans Kree and maybe Amber. I’d like to see her choose a song off the worn out IDOL diva path again, like she did in her audition.

Juliana – A bit dull – I really don’t like “Skyscraper.” I was impressed that she was able to arrange a song like that though. Needs a good 3-4 years to grow so that she can truly viscerally connect with what she sings. The Birdys of the industry are exceptions, not the rule. However, Juliana’s poise is exactly what someone like Charlie could use.

Jett – She was super breathy to the point where the performance came across as affected.

Cristabel – What a gorgeous crackly broken tone. She was easily the best of the first five girls. Personally, I’d like a ban on all Alicia Keys songs.

Aubrey – Compared to the other R&B women in the competition – Candice, Cristabel, Amber – her voice is average. She’s a bit more pop/R&B and she’s pretty, she can sing in tune, but she’s boring. Perhaps I’ve gone insane.

Rachel – Damn. That song did not deserve that shitty arrangement; it warped the energy of that song and just towered over Rachel.

Breanna – That song was weird. It seemed like her voice was about the crack quite a few times and that she probably can’t do much better than this. Her voice is strained. What was up with the judges’ adoration of her?

Janelle – She has a beautiful voice but that she never really seemed to find her footing. There were good moments and moments where there her weaknesses showed. She needs to find songs that aren’t literally bombastic or huge, that’s not her zone.

Zoanette – She needs to find a vocal coach immediately, but she’s got a definite voice. That was the best performance of the night. She is unhinged and crazy. I can’t explain it. In a sea of ballad-heavy girls, I expect this woman to connect emotionally and infuse energy into every performance. Where did that come from? She reminds me of Siobhan; huge voice, doesn’t know how to use it perfectly, but I’m going to enjoy the ride.

Results: I’d genuinely would love to see all of these women again, this was a tough group to be in. They really can’t just have a Top 12 female semi-final round like in years past? At least the cut women can still return. If you told me two weeks ago I would’ve been okay with Zoanette in the Top 10, I would have laughed hysterically. However, I would’ve bounced both of Aubrey and Breanna for Cristabel and Melinda. Aubrey and Breanna strike me as semi-fodder in its purest form.

I wonder if Idol is now regretting the format that they chose for these semifinals. Other than Kree and Angela from last week, the remainder of the top 10 should have come from this group. It's a real shame that it worked out the way it did.

Candice is my favorite, but I really want her to not let them shoehorn her into the over the top big screamer songs. I remember from her group round last season that my favorite thing about her was that her voice was so soft and unexpected for her look. I think that if she keeps her voice under control a la the first part of Natural Woman she will go really far.

I loved Juliana's Skyscraper. If a guy did that he'd be called an artist and praised for making it his own, but since she's a girl and didn't yell and scream she gets mediocre reviews and doesn't move on. Also she was adorable.

No way Melinda was going to stay. She's direct competition for Angela.

This is why I don't like the way this round is done. The five girls who left tonight sing circles around the guys who made it (and some of the other girls, too) from last week.

Janelle kind of tanked tonight. In a sea of solid performances, she was beyond boring and just plain blah.

Zoanette was at points awful and awesome. Her enunciation was terrible, but those low notes were damn good.

I thought Zoanette was terrible...I can't believe she made it out of Hollywood week and to the live rounds??! If I was one of the booted singers I'd be pissed.

I agree-this group of 10 was WAY stronger than last week. I don't know if its because they are better singers or if they just had a little less nerves because they weren't in the first group. I didn't agree with a lot of the choices but (minus Zoanette) it was much closer between the contestants this time.

Fucking Zoanette! Of course! You know Jimmy Iovine is over there praying she doesn't get anywhere near the top 2 - he had to be thinking "what the fuck is Interscope supposed to do with this?!?!?!" during her performance. Were the judges on crack tonight? Even Keith, who's generally been a voice of reason on this show let me down tonight. 'Cuz I mostly disliked who they liked and liked who they sent home. Totally would've kept Julianna, Rachel and probably Melinda and sent Aubrey and Brianna home. I'd have kept Candice since you know they had to have one belter who unnecessarily ornaments songs, and she was by far the best of them tonight, and even though Janelle made a horrible song choice, I like her voice so I'd have kept her too.

(Edited to note that I like Candice's voice a lot and appreciated what she did at the beginning of Natural Woman, but I hate the tendency to over-ornament that's so prevalent on shows like Idol and wish she would get away from it. What can I say, I like restraint and subtlety.)

And because it can't be said enough, FUCKING ZOANETTE!!!

I wish Cristibal made it, there was something about her voice that was unique and I liked it.

Noxema Jackson/ Simba/Zonette needs to go now.

I like Candice but I'll never forget Kelly Clarkson's version of that song and I sort of forgot about her by the end of the night.

Overall these girls could have made up the top 10 and I would of been happy. The format really screwed some of them over.

Interesting how the 70% #IdolDisagree was yanked off the screen in an instant.

No one knocked me out tonight since most of them seemed to have a hard time finding the key, the tune, anything. I can't tell if it's the band, the playback or that these girls have no idea what key they should be singing in.

However, Zoanette going through is an absolute joke. They kept her but not JDA when he could actually hit the notes? I cannot figure that out. That was a trainwreck. I thought, yay, they've given her her moment and she'll be out. I guess they're waiting for America to step up and vote her off so they don't have to be on the hook?

Melinda's outfit was enough to eliminate her in my mind.

I can't wait until Zoanette talks about how she spent a weekend in Sweden one time then busts out some ABBA.

BRihanna/Breanna was perfectly fine and boring.

Rachel Hale was flat as hell for the last bit of her song and Janelle's performance was as lifeless as her hair. The judges were basically "Well, we have to have a country girl, so I guess one of you will do."

Just how much will we see of Mariah's boobs by the end of the season? Do they have their own blog?

I have so much rage now. What the hell was that. I had to turn the tv off when they announced that Zoanette got through. Oh yeah, it's a girl year. Let's put that mess through and act like she's been singing it straight this whole time and not looking like a joke. I cannot. I hope she wins then. Forget this.

I just found out that Jett didn't go through? She was so good. What the hell?

ZOANETTE CAME TO THE PARTY TONIGHT!!!!!! She was easily the best performer of the night, followed very closely by Candice.

I have always generally liked Zoanette since her audition, I didn't care much for her performances in Hollywood Week, but I think she is beginning to gain control of her massive voice. Her ginormous voice reminds me of the throwback R&B singers like Aretha Franklin. Her passion is raw and real, many of the girls tonight I felt like they were totally contrived with their so-called "passion" (*cough* Melinda *cough*) We finally got to hear her backstory and see she has something that makes her a real person, not just some crazy Norman Gentle type of fodder contestant. She has an incredible range and incredible power to her voice. She sang with passion and Nicki was spot on with her comment that the song really showed who Zoanette is as a person. I absolutely LOVED her song choice, it was unexpected, different, and just classic. Everyone in the world knows this song, everybody in the world loves this song. She killed it, she slayed it, she murdered it, she crushed the hell out of it. I wasn't sure how I would end up feeling about Zoanette but I have to say, if she can keep this up for the next rounds, she is my favorite female contestant. She is just so unique, different, and interesting. She has this type of passion and power that can't even be controlled- she's crazy and I love it. A Charlie vs. Zoanette finale please!!!!!!!!! That would be the best finale in Idol history ever.

Okay so about the other contestants:

Melinda- I knew as soon as she was put in the kiss of death spot that the producers probably didn't have very much faith in her... and once she started singing, it was easy to see why. Her vocals are decent but her emotions felt so contrived and fake, especially at the end when she tried to look in pain or whatever. The outfit was atrocious as well.

Candice- Second best performance of the night after Zoanette. She is my second favorite girl I think. She is like a more controlled and subdued/serious version of Zoanette. And I loved her studded jacket.

Juliana- I wasn't crazy about her vocals, she was breathing so hard into the mic after every line and I found it very annoying and distracting (can't believe she actually works with a vocal coach, he/she should be fired for not teaching her how to control her breath better). I did like the arrangement of the song and that she played the guitar. I would have liked to see her make it through over the more boring contestants like Aubrey and Breanna (will get to them next), but I could see why they passed on her- she is just a little too young and hasn't fully developed her skills yet. She would get eaten alive in this competition by the other contestants who have much more experience. But she has big potential and I could see her trying out again in a few years (if Idol lasts that long).

Jett- Did not care for her at all. Interesting arrangement of the Rihanna song, but I just found the higher parts of her tone annoying. And I figured that since they already filled the Asian quota with Adriana from last week, Jett didn't have much of a chance. She seemed rather interesting though.

Cristabel- Have not liked this girl since Day 1. To me, her voice is annoying and horrible. She sounds like a worse version of Alicia Keys. Her song choice was predictable just for that reason. I'm glad she wasn't put through. She seems like a nice person and the fact she sang with Grammy-winners is impressive, but she also has 3 kids at home, I don't know if doing music full time would be the most ideal thing for her. She may have potential to break into the Christian music world though. And I actually do like a lot of female singers with raspy voices, but Cristabel's just wasn't my cup of tea at all.

Aubrey- Totally overrated. She has a good voice, but she was terribly boring and generic. Do not see anything special or "Idol" worthy about her at all. I think she is just fodder, they chose her because she has a pretty face to maybe draw in some male viewers. I don't think she'll last past the Top 20.

Rachel- Not a great song choice for her, but I like that she was a down-home Southern girl, very genuine and always had a nice smile on her face. She was a cute and nice girl, I wish she had gone through instead of Aubrey or Breanna.

Breanna- Also overrated. I liked her slightly better than Aubrey but I also think she is just fodder.

Janelle- Not a great song choice for her, I think she should try more traditional country. I felt like the song was very rushed and like she tried to fit a lot into such a small amount of time. She still has a great voice though and I'm happy she finally made it through after 3 years of trying. I just wish both her and Rachel could have been through instead of Aubrey and Breanna. The sweet country girls are more appealing and "real" than the generic R&B/pop singers.

Zoanette- Already said it above, but her performance was so good I'll say it again. AH-MAZING!!!!!! They clearly saved the best for last. I hope she keeps it up, if she does, I think she can go to the Top 5 at least. I love her anyway, no matter how far she goes, her talent is just amazing, you don't hear singers quite like her anymore.

In the end I agreed with the judges' decisions for the Top 5, my only changes would have been swapping out Aubrey for Rachel, or possibly swapping out both Aubrey and Breanna for Rachel and Juliana.

If this format was used in previous seasons, there would be a lot of excellent former contestants that would not have made it. The one that comes to mind is Haley Reinhart, who didn't have the strongest start, but found her way throughout the season.

Tough night. I really dislike this new format. I agreed with some of the choices, but I did like Cristabel, and Rachel was just cute and spunky. Much more marketable than Zonette! Her enunciation was awful, she's too OTT for me, and I hate to be shallow, but she's not nice to look at. I agree with whoever said once the fans start voting, she will go home and the judges will be off the hook. I bet Jimmy was not happy with her going through because he's all about who will sell. Who cares if you didn't hit some of the notes, you've got spirit.

Last week's girl's were a lot better out the gate, but still better than what I'm expecting tomorrow.

Melinda - That was not good. Even removing Angela's performance last week (which was easily 4th best of the 5 girls that advanced), she was a vocal mess. Charisma and stage presence for days couldn't hide her lack of breath control. I liked her a lot more during her Vegas Solo of 'Price Tag'...I'm okay with the judges not advancing her.

Candice - For me, the easiest decision of the night. She's riding the wave of her 'return arc' and as long as she continues to perform at this level or better, she should go deep. Throw in some producer manipulation and she could have a Top 5 finish. Love her.

Juliana - Yeah, this was a really great vocal but she lacked charisma and I completely forgot about her by the time Aubrey performed. I loved her re-arrangement of 'Skyscraper'. Tonight, she got overlooked by the belters and producer pets.

Jett - Kudos for the piano, but it was a clumsy vocal. Not upset with her not making it.

Cristabel - Another just okay performance. This would have been stellar on last week's 'Boys Night'.

Aubrey - Beautiful girl, potentially the sexiest semifinalist/finalist we've has in the last 6/7 seasons. Her voice was good and I think she earned her keep tonight....that being said, I definitely kept thinking back to Jessica's amazing vocal interpretation of 'Sweet Dreams' last season that Aubrey's lightweight vocal got lost in the shuffle.

Rachel - Lovely fodder. Like Julianna, total non-entity this evening. The vocal was pure punishment.....it was shouty, clumsy, and reeked of...fodder. her 'Thanks Las Vegas!' at the end? She knew it wasn't her night.

Breanna - I love 'Bust Your Windows', and I love Breanna's look. That being said, her performance was an A+, but the vocal was a solid B. She lacked the lower register to hit the notes that Jazmine Sullivan hit, but she captured the mood of the song and she looked amazing doing it. I think Nigel wants a pretty girl put through by wildcard this year, and I think Aubrey & Breanna will be competing for that spot.

Janelle - I really didn't like Janelle tonight, but we're supposed to because Nigel wants us to. I'm completely indifferent on her showing tonight, but based on her previous showings (and obvious producer pet), I would have put her through too.

Zoanette - God Bless us all. For every great vocal moment, there were at least 5 terrible ones to match. Which equals a Standing O? I'm sold. She's keeping it interesting, and on a night where 4 of the other women sucked (Rachel, Cristabel, Jett, and Melinda).......here goes Zoanette coming through.

Ranking The Top 10 Girls on the two weeks:

1. Kree
2. Amber
3. Candice
4. Angela
5. Breanna
6. Janelle
7. Adrianna
8. Aubrey
9. Zoanette
10. Tenna

I'd love to see Amber, Kree, Candice, Angela & Janelle voted into the finals, with Aubrey & Breanna being voted in as wildcards. I refuse to believe we won't have this year, how will the show last through to the May Sweeps?

Holy shit, I just realized what has been bugging me about Minaj and previously couldn't put my finger on. It seems to me that Minaj wants to be the new Simon.... the one for whom the contestants pine and groan ....the one whose approval they seek more than the other three. It came across to me tonight, even more than before that she wants to be perceived as the "hard judge"-- the one whose approval the singers strive to gain.

Problem is, she is no Simon; and this is coming from someone who's never been a huge Simon fan. She seems contrived in her commentary and seems to want to be contrary just for the sake of being contrary; and that was never more apparent to me than it was tonight.

The fact that she delights in contestants like Zoanette and Charlie proves that she could never be Simon because Simon would have no time for them. He might have let Zoanette go to Hollywood but he would have cut her early.

I already know what Zoanette's thread title should be: Old Yeller. She didn't sing; she shouted. It was most unpleasant to my ears. I can see her on Broadway, where it's important to be loud, but as a recording artist? Pul-leeeeez.

It's interesting how a lot of the comments about Zonette are about how she looks.

She caught my attention tonight and I felt giddy. She's not ""Sanjaya." She's not "Norman Gentle."

Zonette is this year's Grace Jones. Like Grace Jones, she's statuesque, theatrical and insane and I fucking love her! When Zonette sings at her lower register, she definitely sounds like Grace Jones. I wonder if the same vitriol against Zonette would be the same if she was cute and blond. "Noxema Jackson?" Really?

Her voice isn't for everyone. But Zonette is a supernova. She may explode and combust but it'll never ever be boring.

Zoanette was on my last nerve in Hollywood week, and then they went and gave her the best intro clip for Vegas. A perfect setup for the song to come. Even before she began, I was feeling 1000% more kindly disposed to her, because she seemed so genuine and, well, nice, in the intro, not flaky and acting out like every other time I've seen her. As soon as she started the song, I knew it was going to be a moment. Mind you, it was a memorable performance, but not a great job of singing. She doesn't have control of her voice and takes big gasps and sings the whole thing all-out. But it was a genius song choice, great job by the band, and she definitely got the best production from the show. What happens going forward, I don't know. I hope she can calm down a little and just let her ordinary self shine through. And modulate the singing a little. Personally I can't see her garnering lots of votes when it comes to the live rounds, but we'll see.

It was easy to pick who was going through, because the judges made their feelings pretty clear. They are being much more upfront about the role of looks. I don't think either Aubrey or Breanna were that much better than some of the other girls, but they both looked fantastic. Aubrey reminds me a little of Jessica Alba. Melinda made no impression on me (except for the pink leggings); Julianna was far too breathy and her little voice petered out on the high notes; Christabel was just OK. Candice started out very well (even though the arrangement at first was identical to Aretha's, and she was singing it note-for-note). But I agree she embellished too much toward the end. Definitely one of the very best voices, though. I preferred Rachel over Janelle just because she did a livelier song and TBH, seemed spunky and much more sincere. Janelle's whole "I'm just glad to be here for my third time" rang very hollow.

I continue to wish for more uptempo songs. That was one of the pluses to Rachel and Breanna.

You know, Zoanette wasn't bad. She actually sang on key most of the time and was very easily the most entertaining of the night. But I'm still over her, though. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see her make the Top 10, but I don't see her lasting much longer beyond that. She's just way too polarizing. And she has this habit of sounding like she's spitting into the mike that annoys me.

Julianna seemed like such a sweet girl. She has a soft, sweet voice that I like. Wasn't crazy about her arrangement to Skyscraper, but I still liked it. I wanted her to make it through, but now I'm kind of glad she didn't. Her singer/songwriter style probably wouldn't have contrasted well with all the glory-noters and belters we have this season.

Janelle had a off-night, but I still like her. She (and the producers) just picked the wrong song. In a way, I'm kind of glad this happened because it sets up a nice growth arc for her and she can redeem herself next week with a good comeback performance.

As soon as I saw that Melinda was singing the same song that Angela sang last week, I knew she was getting bussed. Personally, even though I like Angela, her performance wasn't anything outstanding (The judges must've didn't think it was either because they just talked about her original song instead of the performance at hand). So for the judges to say that Melinda didn't measure up to her was a bit ridiculous. Even more ridiculous was Nicki criticizing Melinda for singing two Jessie J songs when Angela had sung three. I didn't think Melinda's performance was all that great either, but I liked the arrangement better than Angela's, at least. They must've thought Melinda was a threat to Angela. But why, I have no idea.

Overall, I agreed with who the judges put through. This week was much tougher than last week and wasn't nearly as boring.

Both country girls really sucked tonight. If the blonde didn't have the sob story (third time on the show) she would have gone home, rightfully so. She was flat as a pancake and that song choice sucked. Lady Antebellum, Western shirt with fringe, cowboy boots. WE. GET. IT. YOU. SING. COUNTRY. MUSIC.

Rihanna clone #1 and #2 in my prediction will be #1 and #2 females voted out. I didn't understand the praise they got. Mediocre paper-thin voices. Nicki Minaj is crazy with the whole "I can sign you girls right now and you can sell records" nonsense. They are pretty, I will grant them that, but so was Antonella Barba. Who? Yeah, exactly.

Zoanette. I don't get her, but she seems very nice and down to earth. She might be fun to watch on stage for five minutes once a week on a TV show, but she's not my cup of tea and I would not willingly listen to an entire record of that.

Zoanette has a great story (she's young and came from another country, far away, where life isn't that easy.) And she's a performer--she goes all out (and then some) on every song.

That said....I wanted to like her and that was something a little different but then...she was FLAT the entire time. AND she was screechy. I know she goes all out and is a big personality with a big look, but...imo...she is NOT a big talent. She can't really sing, imo, certainly not well enough to advance on.

Why the standing ovation? Why putting her through again? Why, show? Why?

Thank you. I thought maybe it was just me, because I thought she sounded terrible too. I mean, she seemed to more off key than on key. Then she got all that praise and a standing ovation. I wanted to shout, but the song was OFF KEY!"

But then they kept that blond country singer who was so off key, it was hard to believe she made it this far on the show. Really, wtf?
I think that should be fairly important, you know, that you be able to sing in key on this show, but I guess not.
I dont understand it. You'd think that they would want good singers for a singing competion.

Oh, my lord, Aubrey! Beautiful girl, beautiful voice.

Oh, God, I think I liked Zoanette.

How could they not agree on Breanna? She was awesome.

Putting Janelle through and not Rachel was ridiculous.

A lot of women of color this season.

I didn't agree with the judges about Zoanette's "great spirit". Maybe if she smiled, at least once, I'd feel differently. I find her the least interesting of the "joke" contestants Nigel always seems determined to put onto his shows.

The girls were mediocre tonight. You would think the extra time to prepare would have translated to much better performances.

Candice was good but boring. She seemed to be on auto-pilot tonight. I'm usually not a fan of over singing, but I think Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" requires you to kind of get into it with the hand waving and the gospel oohs and aahs. If you've seen Aretha perform this lately, then you know what I mean. I can't believe I'm saying this, but she was showing a bit too much restraint. Still, she is technically better than most of the girls in the competition and she deserved her spot.

Aubrey is the girl version of Elijah. She is very pretty and very current. The vocal was average at best, but I guess they needed to fill their quota for singers who "look" like they could be current artists. The girl with the guitar who sung "Skyscraper" was also current and had a much more unique voice, so I would have picked her for this spot.

I'm not sure how or why Breanna made it through. She dressed well and brought some swag, but this was a terrible song choice. She needed less swag and more anger. If you are going to sing about busting the windows out of your lover's car because you just saw him in bed with another woman, it's not exactly a "brush your shoulder off" moment. But I guess she got through because this was a relatively up-tempo number in a sea of boring ballads. And she had swag. I'm boggled with this one. This spot should have gone to Cristabel and her interesting rasp.

Janelle was a disappointment. Terrible song choice. I thought Rachel gave a better performance tonight. That said, I think Janelle is the better singer in general, so I'm OK with her going through.

Zoanette is the Charlie Askew of the girls. There's definitely a voice there. Sometimes it all comes together, sometimes it's a hot mess. But with Charlie and Zoanette, the fun is in the journey and not the final destination. I want them to continue on despite the fact that they are sometimes terrible.

The judges are starting to irk me now. Randy needs to stop contradicting himself. Nicki needs to be able to admit when her pet projects sucked. Mariah needs to say something mean just once. I doubt any of the above will ever happen, but one can hope. Keith needs to keep doing what he's doing. He's the only one I'm not getting annoyed with.
