So here’s what the BBC has in mind to replace Merlin, and it’s sounds pretty exciting to us! Well, it’s from the combined forces behind Misfits and Merlin, after all – Atlantis.

Atlantis is a new 13 part, 45-minute episode series, created and written by Howard Overman (Misfits, Dirk Gently, Vexed, Merlin) for Saturday nights this Autumn on BBC One

The city of Atlantis is a mysterious, ancient place; a world of bull leaping, of snake haired goddesses and of palaces so vast it was said they were built by giants.

It’s into this strange, compelling realm that the young Jason arrives and an amazing adventure begins, bringing to life the vast store of Greek myths and legends re-imagined for a new generation in an action packed 13-part series.

Executive produced by Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy (Merlin, Hex, As If, Sugar Rush) and Howard Overman for their new production company. It will begin shooting in Wales and Morocco in April.

The series will launch on Saturday nights this Autumn and is executive produced for BBC Cymru Wales by Bethan Jones.

Much as I'm intrigued by this, I do hope it avoids the same narrative missteps that Merlin was guilty of at times.

Yeah, it's worrisome that they weren't more specific on the details. Either way I wish you British TWoPPers the best of luck with this series. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before BBC America picks this up.

I'm just going to get all nostalgic for Stargate Atlantis every time I see the title.

I think what most worries me is that if Jason is a protagonist, then it’s highly likely that Medea will be involved in some capacity as a love interest/antagonist. Hmm, the producers of Merlin, given a female character who acts a love interest to the main hero, who is a highly complex and morally ambiguous figure in the mythology, who has magical powers, and whose name starts with an M?

Sounds like a ready-made amalgamation of Morgana and Guinevere. And given the hash-job they made of Morgana’s characterization, the relentless marginalization of Guinevere and the gross storylines both girls were shoved into, I’m inclined to give this a wide berth. If Merlin proved anything, it’s that Johnny Capps and Julian Murphy haven’t the faintest idea how to create female characters that aren’t perfect saints, psychotic bitches, or dead plot devices. They had five years to prove otherwise, and they never did.

Run Medea, run!

I'm half expecting that there will be a prediction/warning in the first episode that 'ATLANTIS IS DOOOOOMED!!!' Then in the final episode it will turn out that it was wrong and Atlantis will be where everyone has their timeshares in 2013.

So long as there's copious amounts of slash and an appearance from Bradley James, I'll be happy.

Copious amounts of slash - oh absolutely.

An appearance from Bradley James is probably unlikely. I don't see any of the main Merlin folk being on the show.

Robert Emms has been revealed as the first cast member and the details of his role are here
