Nikki was not having a good day and I loved it! The less self-editing she does, the better AI is.

I was shocked to see Turbanator get through and Matheus not from the same group of 8.

Micah is class personified, but I wonder if his "there's always next year" 'tude will actually prove true. This might be the end of the road for AI.

There is no doubt there is more producer interference in "judge's decisions" this season than ever before.

I was on board with Nikki for calling out Matteus (for continuously bringing attention to his height) and Jolly (for his whining/lack of confidence). Jesus. Man up and SING.

Waaaaaaay too many crybabies this season!

Nicki calling out the sob stories made me teary-eyed. Just kidding, but seriously. She only voiced what some are thinking. Jolley crying before he even started singing had me rolling my eyes. And why is this show and The Guy From The Glee Project acting like he's never done this before?

I wasn't really feeling Charlie Askew, but he totally sold it tonight.

Micah was robbed. I'm not understanding his elimination. But Mariah seemed disappointed he didn't melisma all over the song. So I guess she got confused by Micah not doing an R&B song.

And now I need to find my old tin foil hat. We still have our ghost contestants.

OK. We got Kiss of the Spider Woman Going to a Funeral get up and its basically ignored. Hoping he didn't sing that Gaga song.

Was there a lot of musical chairs going on with the judges? And Mariah always sitting at an angle, heh.

Micah had a very nice exit speech.

Jolley needs to have a drink and calm the fuck down.

I'm confused - why was Nicki so pissed about Papa Peachez's song choice? I don't particularly like him, didn't know the song, and wasn't impressed by his performance, but her anger over it seemed really bizarre and overblown. Was there a reason for the stick in her ass I wasn't getting, or...?

@Three Foot Six - I think it's clearly because she put him through last night, seeming like he got a 2nd chance. Due to how poor his group may have done. After tonight, he blew it.

My GOSH; these guys are getting too teary eyed. Paul jolley, put it together dude.

Those who were professional; some made it some didn't. Like Micah. Dang it.

I thought tonight was mixed; good and bad. Glad to see some favorites made it; Paul Jolley, Jimmy Smith, Lazaro Arbos, Josh Holiday, Charlie Askew, Johnny Keyser*.

Some that made it through... eh... either meh or terrifying.

I am so disappointed Gabe Brown and Nate Tao didn't go through. But we didn't get to see their performances. Gosh dangit Idol. What's up with that.

Did David Leathers Jr not make it? I don't remember at all.

So they're going to eliminate another 8 guys to bring it down to 20. Next week. Thanks a lot Idol.

Next week is the girls.

------------

*Just to see how far he may be going.

I've had enough of the crying and whining. I agree with whoever said "Man up!" Somebody has to go home; that's why you are being judged. And this "I worked so hard" or "I want this so bad"--they ALL do. Bad enough to get cut, but don't embarrass yourself.

Was sorry to see Micah go. Loved him! That's the way to say goodbye--I'm looking at you, Frankie.

Had enough of Nikki. She looks like a clown, and none of the other 3 judges gets much of a chance to talk. I can barely stand to watch anymore because I can't stand to hear her voice! Couldn't believe some that got through, like the guy with the veil. Outrageous doesn't mean talent. But she seems to love the strange characters.

While I wasn't a fan of Papa Peachez, I did have to wonder if he pissed in Nikki's cornflakes.

Why did I get sucked into this again?

@Chocorokoroko: I figured she was angry/disappointed that he didn't do a better job, but he didn't even open his mouth before she turned to Randy during the opening chords and snapped, "Why is he doing this song?" Good god, what was so horrific about his song choice that she decided he was going to suck before he even sang? And then she kept yelling, "Why did you choose that song?" like it offended her religion or something. It was just very weird.

I think AI is keeping David Leathers for the future; we also didn't hear Big Adam tonight, either.

Matheus went one "short" joke too far.

Of those shown singing, only Charlie Askew had star quality. I can't see him going any sooner than Top 5, if even then.

No kidding! I wanted to post how sick I am of her.

In the beginning, she was novel, outspoken, and it was okay. But somewhere along the way, it's become "The Nikki Minaj Show" and I'm so sick of her. Randy's been on this program forever and, while I don't have much respect for him musically, he does have some cred in the industry. Keith Urban and Mariah Carey are HUGE stars--far and away more established and more talented than Nicki.

And yet...she's always talking! She's always making the decisions sound like she's got the most authority!

I really, really can't stand her! (Though, on the bright side, at least she didn't keep Papa Peaches. I couldn't figure out how he got that spot in the first place).

But I don't get it. Why is she in charge? (And so sour and glum most of the time).

Don't get Charlie Askew. So I'm sure he'll go far.

I think there is such unfairness in showing a few people over and over while some don't get shown at all. If they make the top 10 they will be quickly cut as they will have no following from the beginning.

Love Nikki. Isn't this show edited. The others must not be saying anything of interest. Blame them. Mariah just smiles serenely and has no vocabulary. We'll see how she handles the live shows.

Nikki says what I say in my living room. Enough with the pity party. Just sing. Love the girl and can't name a song she sings. Or raps. Or whatever it is she does.

Micah was cut because he wasn't pretty enough. Forgot to say my favorite is Devin.

Charlie Askew brought it. I loved his performance.

Randy seems irritated to even be there.

Mariah seems too embarassed and (maybe?)cowed by Nikki. (and Nikki does tend to shut her comments down, so why bother..)

Keith just sits there giggling through the performances like a kid and won't shut up-- you'd think he was 14 yrs old and in front of HIS childhood idol. Had hopes for him, but not now.

And Nikki--- at first I hated the thought of her being on the show, then she (kinda) grew on me with her outspoken remarks, but now I think they're making it all about her and that's sad A.I. :( She's still on the mark on some of her comments, but I see that she goes for more flash than substance, maybe it makes her feel justified in her own success.

And WHAT A LOT of CRYBABIES!!! I've never seen such a sad group (in more ways than one). That person in the veil-- what in the world...?! I guess they are 'tempting' us to tune in and actually hear him sing maybe. Watch them just tell him it's over next week. Altho I wouldn't be crying over that decision. Just too bizarre.

I didn't think that Nick B. deserved to be cut before, so I'm glad he was through. He looks much younger without those big dark glasses. Has he been seen yet on the show this year without a hat, though?

I was trying to figure out why Mariah kept sitting sideways. Does she think that's slimming, that angle?

I liked Charlie's voice but that flourish with his arm at the end had me thinking "Broadway" in the Simony voice in my head.

Someone used the words "emotion porn" to describe what Idol has become, and it definitely fits this episode. I swear half of it was people being elated or, more often, crying like they just lost a loved one. It's almost like the producers get off on this stuff and don't think you can have too much of it. Maybe next year they'll dispense with the singing and just focus on the reactions!

I did think it was a nice touch having Charlie Askew do "Somebody That I Used To Know". He even kinda looks like Gotye.

I love Charlie Askew. He's the only one I care about ever seeing again.

I am so tired of the way both Mariah and Nicki look so sick and bitter whenever the other gets any kind of compliment from the contestants. Lack of poise is completely unattractive. You'd think they could at least fake civility. Most of us do it at work at some point every day for a hell of a lot less money.

It does seem as though Nicki gets 75% of the sound bytes from the panel. Maybe it's because the other judges don't have anything great to say, but that seems unlikely. Maybe it's because Nicki is just long winded. heh.

1. Keith had no problems getting a fair amount of air time when he was on The Voice in Australia. His critiques are insightful and sometimes very funny, but also very concise. Whereas Nicki is insightful and funny but not at all concise.

2. Mariah Carey is no wallflower. If her performances on the Home Shopping Network and MTV Cribs are any indication, girl can bring the entertainment when she wants to. And in the beginning she was doing that. She and Nicki would kind of zing each other. After the big blowout, however, we've been getting a VERY subdued Mariah. She speaks when she is required to, and if Nicki cuts her off, she hands over the spotlight. At this point, Mariah might just be waiting for the 6 months to be done so she can collect her 18 million. In all fairness, if I had to listen Nicki Minaj and her multiple accents as my day job, I would probably zone the hell out as well.

3. Randy has never had a problem getting sound bytes before, although his sound bytes tend to be inane.

I guess we will see when the live shows begin. Hopefully it does even out a bit and it doesn't become the Nicki Minaj show, because as entertaining as Nicki can be, that will get very annoying very quickly.

As for the contestants:

1. In all fairness to Jolley, he was the first to perform his solo, and Ryan was doing the whole, "Well it must be so hard going first." "Do you feel the pressure?" "Tell me what's been the most difficult thing so far." "You don't look so good, Jolley." LOL. By the time the kid got out there, he was a wreck. Then Nicki let him have it for being a wreck. Then every other guy that went up there was poised and professional.

2. I also don't get why Micah was cut.

I too do not understand why Micah was cut. His performance wasn't WOW but it wasn't bad. And I thought they said they were judging it collectively, as far as I remember, the rest of his performances were good. He should have gone through. And I am SO disappointed they put SheMale Glizty Glamor Man With Veil through instead of rocker Gabe and the guy with deaf parents Nate. Does EVERY contestant on Idol have to be outrageous and weird? Can't we have a few normal people? Glad Papa Peachez went. I totally understand Nicki's disgust of him singing that song- it did nothing for his voice at all and he sang with no passion. He scrapped by to this round by the skin of his teeth because she actually convinced the other judges to give him a second chance and he completely blew it. I also don't understand why if he claims to hate singing covers so much, why on earth he'd sign up for a show where you sing nothing BUT covers!!!!!

My fave boys so far are David Leathers (have been a fan since last season and am really hoping he gets through this time- and is it just me, or does his voice sound much deeper now?), Charlie (LOVED his intro to the Gotye song, I just love this kid), Devin (first time we've seen him, he's great, why didn't they ever show him before?), Nick Boddington (wasn't a fan of his last year, but his Stars song was FANTASTIC), and Lazaro.

I'm glad Kayden was cut in the previous round- he was outshined by everyone in his group and he clearly wasn't ready for something like this.

I have been a fan of Mateus's since his first audition but I totally agree with Nicki that he was milking his sob story too much and I don't understand why he would sign up for a show like Idol if he's never sung with a live band before. He really did awful with that Stronger song, if he can't keep in time with the band, he can't move on to the live shows.

As much as I enjoy Nicki as a judge, I agree in these episodes they have made her seem like she is taking over the whole judging panel. Randy occasionally makes some smart remarks and I enjoy hearing from Keith once in a while as well. Nicki is clearly the most "outrageous" one there, but the whole show can't be just about her, it will get annoying after a while.

Also agree about the crying thing- seems like every one of them (except maybe the Devin kid who said he was calm) burst into tears every 5 minutes! I don't know what's worse- that, or every other person fainting/being rushed to the hospital like last season.

I also have to say the song choices for this round were DEPLORABLE. Except for Georgia On My Mind, EVERY one of them was a female song! Why on earth would they make guys sing girl's songs? I suppose to challenge them, but still. Some of them looked really awkward singing Jar of Hearts, Stronger, whatever other pop songs they made them do...

For the next round, I hope Johnny gets cut because he's nothing really that special and he's clearly a douche. And I hope those 2 glitzy guys, JDA/PDA/JK LOL/whatever the hell his name is and that Joel guy get cut because they honestly just kind of scare me (especially Veil Man) and they are trying to be like Adam Lambert, but with more femininity and less talent.

This! Are there NO strong male singers out there? Then again I can't remember the last time there was a strong male rocker.

Having said that, the singers I still recall a few hours aftert the show - Jolly, Devin, Nick and Curtis.

I was so sick of the hard-luck stories that I tuned out of the auditions. But I always enjoy the groups, diva-ness and all, so I tuned back in.

I am still undecided about Nicki. She can be quite brutal but dead on---the 'pity party' remark is accurate, though frankly the show encourages it, so to complain about it is disingenuous. She was also right about Jolly--a clingy, needy weeper is perhaps the least sexy thing evah. They ALL say "I want this so bad!" dumbass. We DON'T care! And as for Mr. Peachez, he had a bad case of 'too-cool-for-the-room' and I was delighted that he and his attitude were piked. But--big but--I have a feeling that her taste is pretty terrible. (red-headed dude with the bandana on his head, et al.) Camp is a style that I can tolerate only with talent, lots of it.

I am still undecided about Maria, too. She has easily the most expressive face I've ever seen--you can always tell what she's thinking without a word being uttered. And when she can wedge a word in, she seems quite witty. Alas, she frequently can't do it.

Like Keith. He seems to really know something about musical technique. Listen and learn, Randy.

The saga of the very overweight black guy was strange and sad. Did he really think he had a chance to win? It appears that he did. This seems true of all the people eliminated tonight because of non-standard appearance, lack of charisma, or charmlessness. Denial. They want looks, talent *and* charisma. The last is perhaps the most important. Jolly thus does not have a prayer.

Charlie is smart, and interesting, but these types are generally eliminated 7th or 8th in the top ten. He might be the exception. Doubt it, though.

Nikki Minaj has been reminding me of the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland for the auditions. If a singer screws up or doesn't measure up to Minaj's standards, it's off with their head. She's personally offended by it. And who gave Mariah the Paula role, except not stoned?

And Charlie Askew's "Someone That I Used To Know" blew everyone else out of the water. The choked emotion flaring through every verse, building and building, there was such passion. Passion for singing. Passion for the song. He poured his soul into his performance and it showed.

So glad to see Charlie Askew doing well. I've been watching for years and never had a personal connection to the show, but I know the Askew family. Good people, and Charlie is genuinely a nice kid. No artifice. I think he's getting a good edit, but then, I don't think you get a good edit if there's nothing there to work with. Hope he makes it to the top 12.

Jolley crying before he even started singing had me rolling my eyes.

He started to say something about other things going on besides Idol before Nikki cut him off, so I wonder if maybe he got some bad news shortly before his performance. Or maybe he's just an overemotional basket case type. We may never know since he's not one of the chosen ones whose backstory has beguiled the producers. I'm willing to cut him a break for this one performance since I liked his voice, but if he stays and still keeps up the waterworks, it'll get tiresome very quickly.

And Charlie Askew's "Someone That I Used To Know" blew everyone else out of the water. The choked emotion flaring through every verse, building and building, there was such passion. Passion for singing. Passion for the song. He poured his soul into his performance and it showed.

I thought Nick Boddington was the best guy last night, but Charlie Askew was very close behind. Those two are definitely quality singers, and I look forward to seeing/hearing more of them.

Word. Dude, do you think none of us have see the Glee Project? Maybe you didn't sing with a full band there but you've definitely done more than sing in your car.

I agree with everyone about having too much crying. Clearly, the producers thought that would help sell the show.

Didn't love him at first but now I'm a Charlie Askew fan. He killed that song. Really knew what it was about and claimed the emotion. One of my big complaints about this show is that too often, contestants sing about something sad with a big smile on their face. Charlie didn't do that.

proserpina65, I also wonder if there was something else behind Jolley's breakdown.

Nicki is too dominating. Maybe that's just how they've edited it because they think she's more interesting? I find Keith's comments more instructive.

Oh Papa Peachez. He was David Bowie without the talent. And someday he's going to look back and kick himself for that "I can't sing somebody else's songs" stupid comment. If Bowie wanted to, could take a song like "Happy Days Are Here Again" and make you weep.

I wasn't excited at all about these judges when they were announced and I swore I wouldn't watch, but -- I think I have a little crush on Keith Urban. I couldn't name a Minaj song. I agree with the previous comment that she can be brutal, but correct. However, she lacks the irresistable charm that Simon had. I'm on the fence. When she made that comment to the short guy, I was all, "Ouch!" and then, "But, well, yeah."

I like Mariah more than I thought I would, though.
