The search for Drew Thompson leads Raylan into the remote wilds of Kentucky hill country with unexpected results.

"I've come to the conclusion that I don't like you Raylan."
Looks like Boyd's pet sheriff slipped his leash.

"Oh my goodness." That's such a wonderfully phrased understatement.

So much happened in this episode, and I'm excited about pretty much all of it. Boyd working for Wynn who's working for Detroit. Raylan and Boyd functioning as rivals, which is the most fun version of their relationship. Vasquez! Tim! Smug FBI guy getting killed! Shelby turning on Boyd! Woohoo, to all of it.

I actually kind of felt for Johnny during his conversation with Ava. He's really the low man on the totem pole.

Critics on twitter kept going on about the sheer number of awesome character actors who showed up in this episode, and I still wasn't really prepared for just how many there were.

Raylan needs a haircut, but I hope he doesn't get one, cuz I am digging the shaggy look! Yeah for Raylan and Boyd back together. I barely recognized Mike O'Malley or Bonita Fredericy.

If there is a better show on TV right now, I dont know what it is. I love this world they have created.

Could Shelby be Drew Thompson?

For most, I'm sure Gerald MacRaney stood out. For me it was Mike O'Malley. Raise your hand if you were watching Yes, Dear a decade ago and thought, "Yeah. I can see him as an enforcer for the Detroit mob."

Ellsworth, Commissioner Jarry, and George Hearst all with parts tonight. is Drew Thompson gonna have mad ninja Bowie Knife skills, awesome facial hair, and a penchant for calling his hooplehead enemies cocksuckers? or an Indian head in a box? would love an Al/Boyd confrontation. after three and a half years this show has finally made me forget Bullock and think of the lead character as Raylan Givens, but all these deadwood Alumni are slightly distracting, no matter how awesome they are

I wish I hadn't read the credits so they would have all been a surprise! Both of Finn Hudson's parents were in the house.

And I liked seeing Winona. It was a nice little scene that demonstrated the character's history, the actor's chemistry and the fact that Raylan would be exhausting to be in a relationship with.

This show is always better with Raylan/Boyd scenes. Always.

Back to normal on Justified this week and I loved it. We have our big story of the season set up nicely here.

Glad to see Raylan and Boyd finally cross paths again this season. Their sequence was a lot of fun, as was Raylan's scene Gerald MacRaney. There were a ton of guest stars on tonight's episode and the show continues to creat memorable characters out of just about every one.

TO and Natalie Zea (dropping in from The Following) still have great chemistry together even if Raylan and Winona are still passive agressive with one another.

Didn't expect Shelby to be the one to pick up Ellen May although I did think he was somewhat concerned about her last week. I don't like his chances against Colton, that's for sure.

I wonder. Remember the first season? This show has actually had a LOT of Deadwood actors. I've been waiting for Ian McShane and Molly Parker for awhile now. They've built Drew Thompson up big enough, you have to figure it's a recognizable actor or a character we already know. Ian McShane was born in 1942, Raymond J. Barry 1939, so they could be contemporaries.

One of my favorites all season. Raylan dealing with a major case that ties in his dad, also dealing with Boyd, his relationship with Winona. I think this is where the show is at it's best. Vasquez, Duffy, Arlo, Winona. It was great!

I don't think Winona buys anything Raylan is selling or will depend on him for anything. She knows she's on her own with this baby. She's still the one to call Raylan as he is, knowing he was late to the appointment, he won't show and he won't stay. Also knows she needs to work.

Damn, I can't believe they crammed so much awesomeness into one episode. But I was loving everything. The return of Vasquez and Agent Barkley/Stephen Tobolowsky. Also the return of Bob Sweeney and the girl from the premiere. The introduction of Mike O'Malley and Gerald MacRaney's characters, especially the latter. The more Deadwood guys, the better, IMO. Art and Rachel getting brief moments, only to be topped by Tim showing up and interacting with Colton. That was an interesting pair right there. The return of Winona was actually pretty decent too. Duffy's scenes with both Boyd and Johnny, and his hilarious non-reaction to Barkley getting his brains blown out right beside him. I couldn't ask for much more.

Well, except one thing: Raylan and Boyd crossing paths again! I just love those two together. Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins's chemistry is just amazing. Whenever those two interact, that is when Justified is at it's best, IMO. All their scenes with the hill people were golden.

And well played on Shelby being the one hiding Ellie May. I suspected it at the very end, but it was still a great reveal. Looks like he's going to be making a play at taking Boyd down. Why do I have a feeling it won't end well for him?

I really like how the Drew Peterson story is playing out. I'm really getting into it and the mysterious, and I just love how it's involving all the big players: Raylan and the Marshals, Boyd and his gang, and Duffy and the Frankfurt crew (and the Detroit mafia as well.) If they play their cards right, the finale will be epic.

Excellent episode! Tonight was like old home week, both for Justified and the cast of Deadwood. Seeing Arlo, Vasquez and Constable Bob in one shot was great.

It's always a delight to see Raylan and Boyd on screen together, but I was glad they didn't force it too early in the season. I used to be of the opinion that Boyd should be dispensed with before series end, but tonight reminded me why he is almost as essential to the show as Raylan.

It's lonely at the top, what with Johnny, Shelby, Raylan, Cassy and probably Duffy all looking to take Boyd down. Hell, even his new number two is lying to him. That's not gonna end well. Can't wait to see what develops between Colt and Tim.

If Shelby gets killed, I will hate this show. After Deadwood and Dexter, I can't watch Jim Beaver die again.

Loved the confrontation between Raylan and Josiah. I thought Raylan might grab his ear, just for old time sake. The severed foot was a surprise. So was Raylan's cousin. I hope we haven't seen the last of the hill people.

This show does irony so well. The FBI agent accusing Raylan of being dirty is dirty himself. And Duffy gets a taste of his own cold medicine.

OH yeah...Winona's back. *yawn*

NED! NED RYERSON!!!

With everybody shouting out all the guest stars, nobody said anything about Filthy Phil (Christopher Douglas Reed) from "Sons of Anarchy" as one of the fellas holding Raylan and Boyd hostage.

There's nothing better than time spent with Raylan and Boyd -- definitely worth waiting for. Olyphant and Goggins are great separately -- but when they're together my viewing pleasure increases exponentially. Heart and soul.

I loved the look on Raylan's face when Mary mentioned how she saw his mother in him. I liked those mountain folks. It was great how they looked after Daniel. "Leaning on the everlasting arms . . . "

The scene with Winona was a great way to start the episode and served a number of purposes -- bringing us up to date on the baby and giving us a chance to find out how truly supportive and responsible a prospective father Raylan has been. Loved how he tried to impress her with how well he's doing at work and with his finances. Loved even more how Winona seemed to recognize his attempts for what they are. Loved how she didn't seem to expect much from him anyway - she seemed happy enough with or without him. She knows better than to depend on him for anything.

Glad to see so many faces, old and new -- wonderful casting.

I'm glad Tim found someone to talk to -- he needs someone to talk to. I'm just not sure Colton is the one.

Oh, Shelby . . .

Great episode.

Just a fantastic episode.

Could Shelby be Drew Thompson?

I love this idea. But even if it's not Shelby, I have a feeling it's going to be someone hiding in plain site, quite possibly someone who's some kind of 'pillar of the community' now.

Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins's chemistry is just amazing

When they were both stuck in that hole together, my principle thought was: Just kiss already.

Great episode! Everything about it clicked, from the opening scene with Winona, where Raylan's lie about the money and bragging about Art trusting him with a 'big case' was touching and pathetic at the same time. Does he really think she cares about either of those things? She just wants him to be there for her, something he can't quite seem to manage, despite his promises. Yet, they still love each other. TO and NZ have amazing chemistry, and they play the connection between these two like a sad violin, or maybe a cello. I want more.

Wow...the FBI agent who thought Raylan was dirty WAS dirty. I didn't see that coming. OR him being taken out by Mike O'Malley. Great casting, there. And the non-reaction from Wynn Duffy? Jere Burns has the best faces ever.

More great casting with Gerald MacRaney. The Hill People were truly creepy, and yet, not. They could've been played to caricature, but they weren't. Loved that Cousin Mary said she 'saw Frances' in Raylan. I think he needed to hear that.

I must be alone, but I was underwhelmed by the Raylan and Boyd scenes. Some great lines, but I didn't see the chemistry I have in the past. I think these two are done with each other as allies. Or maybe I'm just done with Boyd. Still love Walton, but the character has become harder to relate to/root for. For me, anyway.

So many good lines. My personal favorite: "You got a saw? You're gonna need a saw."

Wow, I LOVED this one.
"Hello, Raylan..." So great to have Raylan and Boyd back together, snipping at each other, Raylan having to stop them from killing Boyd, and their last moment together at the tree. Never agree to shake on it with Raylan.

Didn't see Shelby being the one to take Ellen May, it seemed like everyone suspected Cassie or Johnny, and they went in a totally different direction.
Johnny makes me nervous. I kind of feel a little bad for him because it surely will end spectacularly bad for him, and he's a little too reckless in his griping about Boyd.
The whole mystery thing is so intriguing. Great guest stars coloring that story in too. Can't wait to see who Drew is. And the FBI getting blown away really surprised me. Wynn Duffy's non-reaction was pretty great.
The Winona & Raylan scene at the beginning was nice too, and definitely shows where they're both at right now. I liked how Raylan told her he was earning extra cash - but failed to mention that it got stolen by Grifter Barbie and is now in chicken form.
Loved the line about how upset Theo Tonin was - "Well, he's talking to the ear, so..."

Wow. What a great episode. I was shocked when they blew away the FBI guy. Shows how ruthless they are too, as the feds tend to get a mite upset and, uh, focused, when one of their own gets killed.

I'll be very surprised if Colton, Ellen May, Johnny or Shelby survive this season. I'm hoping that at least one of them does, (even Colt, who I don't hate for some reason). Speaking of Colt, I would have liked to see a longer conversation between him and Tim.

I'm confused--was it the Hill family living in the hills? Loved the fact that Boyd tried to make a connection but was caught out in his lie, but Raylan didn't even try to do so. I also enjoy the fact that there seem to be a fair number of family matriarchs that call the shots in this series.

The foot at the end tied in with the whole "the hills are cannibals" thing. Actually, that's a great rumor to have about your family, if you want to be left alone.

Alan Sepinwall's review of the episode.

I wonder how many fanfickers will come up with an alternate plot with Raylan, Boyd and the handcuffs. I wonder how long before some hack author makes a bestseller out of it. "Fifty Shades of Harlan," here we come!

I'm sorry to second guess Detroit, but wouldn't murdering an FBI agent bring unwanted attention to Drew Thompson? I'm trying to figure the angle in killing him. The Feds are gonna be pissed that one of their own got capped and they will rain a shitstorm down on everyone involved.

How can Johnny not realize that Wynn Duffy will turn on and kill him just as easily as he would Boyd?

I think Johnny's too bitter and angry to think ahead much. Because he's running his mouth to Ava a lot too, and if he thinks she'll back him over Boyd even for a second, he's in for a rude awakening.

I so wanted Wynn Duffy to ask "Did you just shoot an FBI agent in my motorcoach? Do that in your own car."

Classic Justified episode.

Really loved seeing Winona at the begining and their interaction is still fantastic - although there's no question Winona seems a lot more chilled now she's away from Raylan.

Boyd, the hill-folk, and the Dixie Mafia stuff were all fantastic. Shelby better watch out though - there's no way Boyd will take that betrayal lying-down.

"What do ya mean, no sense of humor? This is funny. I know I'm laughin'" got me pretty much howling for ten minutes straight. And not to state something so glaringly obvious, but TO is just so devilish charming in his delivery. It's hard not to swoon a little when he rolls out a line like that with that smirk on his face.

Still love Walton, but the character has become harder to relate to/root for.

Seeing Boyd & Raylan together is always absolutely gold for me, but I have to agree -- even as I was enjoying the hell out of their scenes together and even though I find Boyd incredibly fascinating by himself, it was hard not to recall that yes, just last episode he ordered poor Ellen May killed. I understand his reasoning behind it, and yes, he has killed many folks over the years so this isn't exactly new, but while watching Ellen May at Selby's table, looking so small and frail, I think hated Boyd a little.

even Colt, who I don't hate for some reason

There is something sad about Colton, made more stark by the last episode where he clearly wasn't ready to murder Ellen May in cold blood, but I feel like it's always been there from the beginning (and Ron Eldard is doing an amazing job -- not as in your face or scene-chewing as some other characters/actors, but subtly multi-layered and quiet when called for). At times he's as violent and unstable as any of the wrong-side-of-the-law characters in the show, but Colton seems to be quite aware of his downward spiral. I liked the way he shook his head and laughed when Tim offered to help him apply for a marshal position. It's as if he knew he was too far from it now - and he is.

Oh, I honestly cannot wait to see where they're going with Tim and Colton, and how that's going to affect Raylan and Boyd going after Drew Thompson. And the lines leading to Tim's quite devastating "I was too young to blow off the Taliban's heads, so it evens out" was a prime example of Justified's excellence in dialogue writing. The scene took about a minute, if that, but it established the current situation, threw in some dry humour (Tim's book choices, and his deadpan, "Native American princess with invisible forest animals"), gave us all a reminder of Tim's background and then even told us a little about where Tim's head might be at these days. Just so good.

For the next Deadwood reunion, can we have John Hawkes? He's a pretty big name in movies now, so it may be just impossible, but a girl can dream.

I don't know why but I'm really annoyed that Shelby is now trying to take Boyd down. Oh he was good enough to help you steal the election for sheriff but now you're a good man? Whatever. But at least we know what happened to Ellen May. Colt is going to be in so much trouble!

It was nice to see Boyd and Raylan in a scene together again. It was less nice to see Winona.

Now that is the "Justified" I know and love. Definitely, the best episode of the season, one of the best in the entire series. Was anyone else hoping that was going to be Mags appearing out of the trees?

""Well, my goodness" is the best line reading of Olyphant's career I think. So perfect. If TPTB have any brains, they will work that into all the marketing of this show going forward.

I just love the dynamic between Goggins and Olyphant. I was actually happy to see Winona back, in small doses she's fine.

More like this please and thank you.

ETA: Because I thought I had the line right the first time LOL

Even without reading the postmortum, I think the entire dialogue worked quite as well as a subtle hint -- the war did numbers on him. Both him and Colton. The cracks are more obvious on Colton, but Tim's obviously not completely intact, either, even though he does look like he's bottling it up pretty well.

I loved the scene where Tim sees Colton's car pulling up - he immediately gets tense and pulls back behind his truck, defensive position and his hand on the holster, and then sees Colton's army boots. Next scene they're talking like good buddies.
