Welcome to the brand spankin' new forum for The Americans. I've turned the old thread from the Dramas forum into a place for General Gabbery and will set up episode threads for each episode as they air.

I've also started a Spoiler and Spec thread so we can keep other discussions clear of spoilers. No need to use spoiler tags in that thread. Don't post spoilers anywhere else in the forum, not even tagged ones.

Feel free to start character threads as the discussion leads you.

You can ask any questions of me here or PM me anytime.

Happy intrigue!

What Loandbehold said, though could we also expand the discussion to include spy novels/films? Or do you think comparisons with those should get their own thread?

I mentioned this in the "Pilot" thread, but can there be a thread for the time/setting of this show?

Sure, sounds like a great idea. Any clever title ideas?

I think the comparison thread can and should encompass all kinds of spy- related stuff. I will update the title accordingly.

Also, while its definitely good to check in on what thread topics are appropriate to create, anyone may start a character-specific thread if you feel like you want to dive into that kind of discussion

Just an FYI: While I've been on this section of the site, reading, I've gotten multiple--like, 7 or 8--Blocked Attack alerts from my Norton Internet Security.

The alert reads:
Web Attack: Mass Injection Website
Attacking Computer: localhost (127.0.0.1,11536)
Attacker URL: googleanalytics.com/googleapi.js
Destination Address: localhost (127.0.0.1,51048)
Source Address: 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1)
Traffic Description: TCP, Port 11536

Just in case you need that info to find the problem area on TWoP.

There's a certain banner ad, for Joss & Main, which has been at the top of every page I've read here that has caused a Blocked Attack alert. The ads are for different items from that website, but they're all for that website in general.

Edited to Add: I just read in both Competitive Reality Shows & Dramas & got the *same* Blocked Attack alert in each of those sections, *multiple* times, as well. And the Joss & Main ad I cited above wasn't on some of those pages at the time I got the alert either. So it looks like multiple ads, or whatever, in multiple areas of TWoP are perhaps infected.

Hope this helps. Feel free to PM me regarding this issue or respond here if you wish. Thanks.

Hi BW Manilowe, sorry to hear about this. The best thing for you to do is to report this officially in our tech issues forum. PM me if you have trouble.

I reported it there a few hours ago--& so did a number of people before me, some with different virus type issues than what I reported.

And I'm still getting the issue, now on every page I visit at the site as of now.

I hope the techs/whomever can find the problem soon. Right now I'm trying to avoid the site as much as possible until it's fixed. Which is kind of hard 'cause I like reading the site (frowns)

EDITED TO ADD: OK it's now 10:49 Eastern (I originally posted around 8:20 Eastern). After I made the initial part of the post, I had to restart my computer for another reason besides the Blocked Virus warnings. Since I did that--so far anyway--I'm no longer getting the Blocked Virus warnings when I read the site. So maybe the techs eliminated it or blocked it at your end from attacking the site?? I honestly don't think--especially since others reported the same issue--it was an issue with my computer/antivirus.

Could very well be. But the article you linked specifically said something about the problem being in Chrome browsers. I used IE (I think it's IE9)... built into the AOL Desktop 9.7 software... when I had the problems.

Would it be possible to start a topic regarding Cold War politics and communism? I enjoy discussing these themes as they relate to the episode, but I don't want to get dinged for veering off topic.

larapu2000 beat me to it...I was going to suggest the same thing for the same reason. Let each episode topic stand on its own but start a different thread on the politics of the time and the true dimensions of Marxism/Communism. Thanks!

I think that discussion could go in the already established 80s thread for now. If it gets too cluttered we can re-evaluate, but its
early days, let's see how things go for a bit.

Now that the site is back up--although not before it put a virus on my work computer, yay!--any chance our recapper might double back and provide a recap of episode 2?

Recaps were still happening during the attack and were posted on a special tumblr. I'm sure the editorial team will back everything up.

In the meantime, you can read last week's here.

What's the consensus on a thread re: the music played on the show? Or would that fall appropriately in the "setting" thread?

I think for now talk about music in the setting thread. It's not so busy at this point that it would be hard to follow, and if it gets that way we can always create one.
Thanks for checking!

Could the thread name be shortened to "It Was the '80s: The Design and Times of The Americans"?

Is it acceptable to post links to and or reference other TV discussion forums in the threads?

I read over the TWoP Dos and Don't and the FAQ, but they didn't really answer my question. I was asked to list what other The Americans forums I read, but I don't want to violate the rules?

Thanks!

You can link to other boards but don't get caught up talking about other boards (it's a fine line I know).

Here's the relevant section from the FAQ It falls under the "don't talk about the boards on the boards" rule.

We also ask that you not discuss other boards on our boards. You may certainly link to them, but conversations taking place on other sites should not become the foreground of the discussion on TWoP.

Heads up. I'm going to delete the "wish list" thread. It's not really generating the intended discussion and I think we can easily talk about guest stars/upcoming plots we'd like to see in the speculation or general gabbery threads. Leaving it up and locked for a day or two so you can reference what you started talking about and take it to other threads.

Hi. Would it be okay if more characters had dedicated threads? I don't have anything to contribute as of now, but I would enjoy reading the discussion by others.

Can we also have a "Americans Cast in Other Roles" thread? The only title I could come up for it was "Spies in Disguise", and I'm 99.9% sure someone can come up with a better thread title than that one.

Yes! All major characters should have threads. I started a few more and we can add if and when the cast grows. If you have a great idea for a clever title, let me know here, open to suggestions/changes to what I have started.

I like the Spies in Disguise too, making that so.

You can talk about the recap as it relates to your thoughts about the episode in the episode-specific threads. But too much recap/recapper commentary can verge into boards-on-boards territory so we try to keep that to a minimum.
