OK, I'll Start.

Joe P. is clearly being cast as the villain here. Sadly, he seems to be more of an asshole villain like Dave rather than a fun villain like Victor. Time will tell.

Candy is clearly supposed to be the goofball, although she is more of a Mary type than a Barry type. I will say that Courtney does a much better job at playing the straight man than Moe ever will. I do like that these girls make their living selling the old clothes that the California and Texas crews usually toss away. Turns out they aren't as worthless as you thought.

Want a bickering couple? Chris and Tad are your boys. They are so much like Brandi and Jarrod, even down to the "Crazy Spender/Show some Restraint" vibe. It's sad that their store was so badly hit by Sandy. Hopefully the exposure from the show will help them get back on their feet.

"Storage locker day trader" Mike is "Gambler" Darrell. Hopefully, his quick flip selling style will show us what these guys actually get for these items, rather than what they are "worth".

While Dan/Laura have their quirks and Walt is a full blown character, John Luke is strictly no-nonsense, and somewhat humourless. I'm not sure if he works on this show at all.

Well, I had a look at the two eps they had on last night.

Joe P. is definitely our villain, but thus far less of a douche than, say, Hester. Let's see what he does.

I am laying claim to Candy, who is rightfully mine. As a redhead, she has my little crabby heart quivering. Of course, she's a little goofy (and I agree, it's "Padianesque"), but it's endearing. As such, I will skitter over and rescue her from that awful van. Courtney is a cute, quirky "everygal," but she has a rock on her finger. Cleavage or no, she is thusly discarded into the "Jenny Grumbles Broke My Heart Dumpster." Talk to the tear-stained claw. One other thing, though; I am one of those animal rights types. Fur is murder. I'll have to give Candy a spanking once we've escaped New Yawk.

The rest are largely interchangeable to me. Maybe it's because all dark-haired New Yawk types look alike to me. Oh, shush. Ba da bing. Whatever. Call Joe Pesci.

I like that they need to talk like they're mobsters robbing banks and use terms like "flow" when they talk about profit. I think it helps them forget that they're really just buying storage lockers that are mostly full of people's garbage.

I watched but was half in and half out. I need to watch it again. But I agree, it pretty much follows the same formula as the other 2 shows.

I found the character refreshing, and I'll take it as a response to the frequent audience complaints about the inflated "values" of the items.

I liked it okay but besides the ladies, I like the cast. I'm going to have to give the ladies more time to grow on me, and maybe I'll overlook that silly retro look they're sporting.

Just based on what we've seen so far, I think I'll like this version of SW better than the Texas one. Overall I generally enjoy the format of the SW franchise. Sadly, there are too many cast members in SW:Texas that I simply can't tolerate watching (Moe and Mary in particular make me feel physcially ill). It's possible the two girls in SW:New York will eventually annoy the hell out of me, but probably not so severely as to make it unwatchable. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Overall it's harder to place this group of people into categories then the Texas cast but here I go.

I thought Joe P was supposed the be the Barry of the group. They gave him the cute (or annoying depending how you view it) sing over whenever he does anything like they gave Moe on the Texas version for a bunch of episodes.

The girls are supposed to be Jarred and Brandy(ie new shop owners)

The guys who owned the antique store in Hoboken are more in the Darrell Sheets mold(it should be pointed out their store got flooded in Hurricane Sandy, I am guessing they will play that up in future episodes)

The Hustler was Dave. I should point out the guy who is his coworker(Brandon) to me was the standout star of the show, he was such an idiot it was hilarious(especially with the bullhorn). I am guessing withing 10 episodes he will become a regular.

I'm going to give it another season for shakedown.

We got into the other versions after they were on for a while, and I'm definitely a fan of the later seasons. If I jumped into the others initially, it would have taken a while for me to warm up.

NutmegsMom thinks the guys are gay. I guess the Brandi/Jarred vibe validates it.

This version is trying to hard to slot characters in holes rather than pick people that have certain characteristics and going from there.

I already like it better than Texas. I also like how they showed Mike actually selling his stuff around town. They seem to price their goods a lot lower than California, which seems more realistic.

I originally posted this in the main Storage Wars thread. I didn't see that there is a separate thread for NY. Apologies if this is not allowed.

I watched Storage Wars NY and found it to be pretty entertaining and on a whole, less annoying than you would think. I enjoyed 'The Hustler' (the whole show is about my stomach?) who actually sold and made money on what he bought and didn't inflate the prices. That was realistic. The two girls I liked as well, they seemed to be fairly pricing what they found. I love that they dress up when they go to auctions. It pays to advertise if you are re-selling cool clothes.

I wondered the whole time if the partners were gay. One guy seemed like he was but the other didn't (how I know this based on two epi's I couldn't say) but the one who kept eating while doing the TH's was so unrefined that he just seemed like your basic dude. But my gaydar may need fine tuning.

The producers may have gone a little overboard in casting to get the image they wanted, but I liked the first episodes. I was surprised that the auctioneer wasn't a seasoned professional with a rote intro spiel and patter, but I'll take that any day over somebody like Dan making a hash of things trying to impress everyone.

I'm not sure I like this show enough to put it on the DVR. I don't watch Texas at ALL because the "characters" are so freaking annoying. I'm having the same problem with NY, though if I had to choose one of the two spin offs to watch it would probably be NY.

My biggest problem is with the girls. Ok, so they buy lockers just for vintage clothing? Storage lockers seem like a bad place to bank on sellable clothing. You might get lucky and find a vintage haul, but what are the odds of the clothing not being moth eaten and well worn, in the real world? Literally any thrift store or flea market would be a better choice for that. They do business out of a van? Ok then.... I think the biggest issue is the fact that they keep trying to portray them as sexy. I'm going to go full snark here and say I can let it squeak by with Candy, but not Courtney. Please stop trying to act like Courtney is sexy.

Agreed-Coutney appears almost cartoonish. And their THs sound so overly scripted. I won't DVR, but I will watch On Demand when there's nothing better to watch ;)

Is there still a market for vintage clothes? Back in 90's the Lounge Lizard and Swing Dance fads made vintage clothes really popular and really expensive but that was a while ago. It seems like it's a very small market these days where I live. Maybe that's why they're selling their clothes out of a van.

I think they're selling their clothes out of a van because rents in the hipster areas of Brooklyn (where vintage/retro is indeed popular) are insanely high. Their only overhead with a van is fuel, repairs, and the occasional fine when they can't use their alleged sex appeal to sweet talk the cop out of writing a ticket. I really hope attending auctions in girly-girl attire is for the cameras only, because pawing through piles of other people's junk and schlepping both treasures and trash in dresses and heels is beyond stupid.

Hipster New Yorkers aren't willing to travel to other areas of the city to shop for clothes?

Oh yes, there is still a huge market for vintage clothes. Of course, 80s is considered vintage now too which annoys me. I live in the Midwest and vintage at Goodwill/Salvation Army is pretty rare. I can only imagine the competition in NY.

I think this show is going to be good....and I'm sorry to hear that the two guys' shop was devastated in Hurricane Sandy. I'm also hopeful that 'dumb' hot guy (to quote The Hustler) shows up more. He cracked me up with the bullhorn. Loved how it took both of them to get the unit door fully open. It must have been packed.

Yes, the market is quite strong (this is what I do for a living,) finding good stuff is the problem.

The show is OK, not quite as phony (yet) as the original SW (in terms of salting exotic items in the lockers), but I love Chris and Tad just because they have a one-eyed dog! As for Mike's muscle head cousin Brandon--hubba hubba.

I found it slightly amusing that Courtney's "Cinnamon Bun" moved around so much, mostly because they filmed all of her TH's with her hat on backwards from the way she was mostly wearing it earlier. If you're going to highlight something about how a cast member is dressed, you need to watch the continuity on it.

Being a native New Yorker, at first I felt the characters were a little stereotyped, but I actually like them. The girls seem way too contrived, though. They're billed as being "new to the storage scene", which makes me think they were chosen for the show for their entertainment value. To me they seem like the Barry of the group - not really into the storage scene and only looking for certain very specific types of treasures.

I picked Mike out as a native Bronxite right away as that's my hometown. He's a classic. I have a friend named Mike from the area he comes from who is a lot like him. Those scenes with him and his cousin and uncle were priceless!

I also loved the scene in the shop in Grand Central, plus the one where the girls are standing on Randall's Island across the river from Manhattan. I don't think I've been to Randall's Island in decades. Fun to watch!

Barry mentioned in one episode that his appearance on the show was his first time at a storage auction. It wouldn't surprise me if any of this crew were in the same boat, or really actors for that matter.

I was embarrassed while watching Candy and Courtney. I felt like they shoved themselves into "vintage" clothes to try to create a character, since they have all the camera presence of a dead fly. "Cinnamon Bun", with the satellite dish on her head, is the most awkward person I've seen on these storage shows. They look more like they're looking for a royal wedding than they're into vintage.

Mike also seems like a big poser, like Fred Armisen in an SNL rap sketch. And not much camera presence.

Joe P reminds me a lot of Victor from Texas. Victor is probably my favorite of everyone on these (along with Jarod and Brandi). Joe P, not a favorite, but he's very natural with the cameras.

Chris and Tad are likeable mostly because they don't seem to be trying to be what they aren't, and their interaction together is kind of cute. I wish they wouldn't wear those oversized caps though.

Chris and Tad register on my creep meter. And don't get me started about how they were baiting Mike asking him repeatedly if he was a "Guido". It was all Mike could do to keep from going off on them, but he has more class than to come down to their level. I am from the Bronx and trust me, Mike is no poser. I think he is a real guy just putting on that outfit for TV, kind of like Jarrod on the original "Storage Wars". I think it's a producer gimmick, done for entertainment value.

Getting back to the "Guido" prodding, I'd seriously like to know why it's OK to put stuff like this on TV. What if someone were to go up to Chris and Tad and ask them if they were really gay or some derogatory word for gay? [snip] It's just as bad when done to Italians as any other ethnic group. I am an Italian American and I am very upset about this, so much so that I am going to write A&E about it.

Reenforcing television stereotypes opens you to ridicule. If you dress like a stereotype for a reality television show, expect the other cast members to tease you for it. Barry was just as funny pointing out that Jarod dresses like a "Cholo" even though he's not Hispanic. [snip]
