From Zap2it:

Marshall Evans pushes for Juliette and Rayna to collaborate at an event at the Ryman theater; when Peggy's desperation escalates, Teddy is forced to tell Rayna the truth; Scarlett gets closer to Gunnar.

It was very gratifying to see the two leads finally interact. And not only did they throw lines at each other, they wrote a song. All quite well done!

And I really like that Juliette has a good guy. She needs someone like him in her life. The whole show needs more joy. Reyna especially seems to have no joy in her life. And while I am bitching, the whole Gunnar and blond girl (she is so boring I don't even know her name) storyline has got to be the most boring and predictable in the history of the world. We know they are Meant To Be- please make it a little interesting!

It is just me, or is Juliette's character suddenly a little off? She has always got this pinched face, acting like a stubborn tween. Anyone who got where she is would have lost that attitude, and also stopped fighting the consequences of her shoplifting. Not only that, she would be enough of an opportunist to see the huge upside of writing and singing with Reyna. Instead, they have her childishly complaining literally until the moment they take the stage. It is a very tricky mix of childlike and savvy to capture in Juliette; it just seems the last few episodes seems like the mix is wrong.

And I wish they would stop using alcohol so much in the stories. Especially in the songwriting. How many times do they drink to inspire their songwriting? Really, a 45 year old mom after staying up all night is going to start drinking Vodka for inspiration? Why not be a little brave and show them doing something else? At least have them smoke weed, which seems a lot more common among musicians!

I LOVED that song that Juliette and Rayna did at the end of the show! That could be a hit on country radio right now. And I really enjoyed the interaction and how they really did work together well once they retracted the claws and just got down to business.

I finally feel like they are trying to make real progress with all of the storylines. And I am really developing an appreciation for Rayna's new producer. I like his attitude (and he's sexy as hell!).

It was really refreshing to see the mains together, finally. I liked Rayna's passive aggressiveness compared to Juliete's overt hostility. It sort of highlighted how Rayna is a pro. She hates this girl but she has hated a million other girls on a million tours. It feels more personal for Juliette.

It isn't just that they are the two main characters. They are the most interesting characters, which isn't always the case for main characters. And those two actresses outshine pretty much everyone else on the show. So, hopefully, they will continue to be featured together.

I do not care about Scarlet. Not one bit. Nice voice and all. But dull as a door knob.

Connie Britton towering over Hayden was kind of funny. I don't think of Connie Britton as being that tall. Hayden is just so little.

I am confused. Nashville released two new songs on iTunes today, one which was called "Morning of the Rain" by Jonathan Jackson (Avery). He wrote it too. And it's really a beautiful song and I was looking forward to seeing/hearing it tonight, But then the episode aired and Avery didn't perform it. But then I went on Twitter and saw someone congratulating him for the performance. So did Avery sing tonight or not?!

No, Deacon's song was "Papa writes to Johnny" (the other one released on iTunes this week).

I'm just mystified why Nashville would release "Morning of the Rain" this week and then not use it in the show...and it's such a cool song!

I don't think it was Deacon's song.

I LOVED Rayna's/Juliette's song! Fantastic. Eric Close did a great job with the 'Oh, shit' look. I also noticed how much taller Connie is than Hayden. Too funny. I hope they become frenemies.

I mostly like Scarlet - just wish she'd grow a backbone and keep it - and I love her voice. She did a great job with Ring of Fire tonight. But Gunner was beyond annoying tonight. Could he have made it any more obvious to the woman he's sleeping with that he's obsessed with Scarlet. And then his jumping in when the guy was kissing Scarlet and suggesting she's a slut? I wanted her to smack him. It's none of his business. And if anyone's taking advantage of her fragile emotional state it's him. He's hanging all over her just waiting for his chance - when clearly she's not over Avery and probably won't be for a while. What I'd like to see with Scarlet is her simply working on her music for a bit. I realize this is a soapy drama but it won't make her more likable to jump from Avery to Gunner.

I was happy to finally get some real interaction between Rayna and Juliette tonight. Both came across as a little unreasonable at different times, but then they sucked it up and acted like professionals. What would really have made it a good night would have been for them to bond a little over their shared dislike of the guy running the record label. He's been pushing them both around, blackmailed them both into doing the duet, and it would have been a nice moment if they had realized it.

They should form a union! Norma Rae!

I haven't minded him until now. But going right to the loose woman thing is a real pet peeve of mine. I thought he was a total jerk.

I keep watching this show, but I'm not sure why. I find two of the three female leads hard to sit through. Rayna is completely unlikeable to me, and Scarlett is as annoying as can be. Meanwhile, Juliet's the bitch and she's the only one I can stand. Weird.

I wonder if they cut out a scene of Avery singing that song at the concert. I thought it was weird that we didn't see him actually singing at the concert; only hearing him brag to Wyclef Jean about it near the end. That could explain why the song is on I-tunes, but if so, it's too bad they cut it.

Loved Rayna and Juliette finally reuniting. I liked how both hated each other in their own way: Juliette being more openly hostile and immature towards her, while Rayna busted out some impressive passive aggressive shit. Deacon and Rayna's producer's reactions to all that were priceless. But I'm glad they pulled it together at the end and the song was pretty epic, although the music was a bit too loud, IMO. But I'm very intrigued over the studio now wanting those two to tour together. I think this show is at it's best when Rayna and Juliette are together. Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere have great rivalry chemistry.

Damnit, Coleman! At the risk of being cruel, I wish you didn't give Ted any heads up. Because I think Lamar is smart and evil enough to easily find a way to squash the story. Unless Peggy ends up being a major wildcard. "Amused" that Ted was all "How dare he!" about it, even though he knew full well about what was going down last week with the police preventing Coleman from getting to the signing (although, to be fair, he didn't expect him to get arrested.) If you are willing to be Lamar's puppet, don't whine when things get dirty.

Scarlett and Gunnar both annoyed the hell out of me tonight. Scarlett for being mopey (although, I enjoyed her scene with Deacon), but Gunnar suddenly getting all protective was ridiculous. The loose comment was low (wish he would say that to Juliette; she'd smack him straight out of Nashville.) And why is her in a black dress and singing Johnny Cash, the moment he suddenly goes all gaga over her? Avery's "I slept with her after we broke up!" excuse was hilarious; you waited, what? Ten minutes? Hailey (Gunnar's girlfriend, I think?) is the only one I feel for out that group.

It's been a long time since anyone has grossed me out as much as Marilyn Rhodes. She actually threatened Lucky Spencer into sleeping with her. The woman in her forties and looks fabulous. Why is she threatening twenty-somethings into sleeping with her? Eww.

Sean Butler has some strange speaking patterns, but he and Juliette are adorable. See, Chuck Bass. That's how people move past hating themselves.

Line of the Night goes to Coleman: "You know what Teddy, I believe you. I just don't think anyone else will."

I desperately want Rayna to take Juliette under her wing. The girl so needs a real role model and support system that consists of people who aren't on her payroll.

I hate how Lamar talks about Rayna. She's his child, not something to be managed. It's about time for a diva dip, this time focused in his direction.

Also? Loved that Liam and Deacon didn't have a pissing contest. Instead, they seemed to genuinely enjoy each other's company and talent and having another dude around as the passive aggressive cat fighting spun out of control.

Yes. I enjoyed that as well. Deacon needs a male friend to bond with.

The actor who plays Marshall Evans looks different to me. Can't tell if it's that he used to wear glasses or if he's lost weight or what, but something has changed.

And as much as I loved the end performance by Rayna/Juliette, I was totally distracted by Juliette's dress. That thing was so short, I kept waiting for it to end up around her waist! I'd be willing to bet all the extras in the front row during filming got quite an eyeful!

I love this show but I really hated that song. I could barely hear them over the blaring music. How did it go... 'you got the WRONG SONG...' Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too. And the wrong sound mix and some really bad styling. They looked like mom/daughter streetwalkers up there in their matchy, sparkly, too-tight, too-short dresses and their matchy, beachy mop heads. And when Rayna's hub complimented her styling, her hair was pulled back. I guess she couldn't let Juliet out-do her in the mop head dept. They both looked like they could use a hairbrush and Juliet looked like she got that red lipstick from Walgreens.

But, yeah, I'll miss it.

I loved the song. I agree that the music was a bit too loud but it was catchy. I will be curious to hear the studio version of it where they can hopefully tone down that background music. I believe it was Hayden who did some interesting things in the harmonies towards the end that added some flair to them.

I wonder if we'll ever find out if there is more behind Juliette's hostility towards Rayna. I feel there is something unexplored there that I'm almost certain relates to her mother.

I thought the focus on Teddy during the song was also very effective.

I still can't stand Scarlett and her gee, gosh golliness. I usually love her voice but her strange interpretation of "Ring of Fire" didn't even help her tonight. And now her black dress has ruined Gunnar too. Avery is clearly supposed to be the somewhat jerky, bad-for-her boyfriend but goodness I'll take a jerk over the 'good guy' who acts like an asshole because his reasons are 'pure' and out of 'love'.

After all that, we got only 15 seconds of Buddy Miller? We wuz robbed.
I had a good laugh when the Edgehill CEO was saying "This is gonna be huge". Guess what? Who wrote that song? Who's going to have the publishing rights? You might want to rethink how you treat your artists.
Good for the tv show to finally bring the two stars together, but I foresee a nuclear meltdown coming to a stage near you. Edgehill is going to book a tour without their consent, I think.
Ahhh, poor little quarterback. Can't complete a pass on or off the field, eh? Paging Carrie Underwood....

matchy, sparkly, too-tight, too-short dresses

Yeah, I bet the front row vultures couldn't even tell you the lyrics to the song after that.

I LOVE that Sonny from "Treme" is Liam on Nashville and that unlike his character on Treme, he gets to be a successful musician here. I've always really enjoyed him as an actor. I guess he's supposed to be kind of like a Jack White-kinda guy? Rock musician who moves to Nashville and produces female-legend country albums?

But I HATE that Hayden's football player is all saving himself for marriage. Is he supposed to be Tebow? I mean, it's cute that he didn't want to just hop into bed with her and respects her and all, it's just very eye-roll-inducing for me. Or maybe I'm just a horrible cynic ;-)

There were two hilarious moments of the episode for me. The first:

Liam (about Juliette): “Girl seriously needs to get laid.”
Rayna: “That is so not her problem.”

And the second one was when Juliette asked if Rayna wanted to write with her and Rayna gave that enthusiastic nope!

I did feel some tension between Liam and Deacon first and I couldn't tell if Deacon was annoyed about Liam getting attention from Rayna and Juliette or if he was just annoyed Liam wasn't trying hard to stop the arguing. They did get along later though.

I wonder just how many things Lamar will push Teddy into. I hope Lamar is smart enough to go to Rayna next. Given Coleman, Tandy and Rayna grew up together and he worked with Lamar for many years, it is pretty severe of Lamar to purposely send Coleman to jail for a crime he did not commit.

I really enjoyed Rayna and Juliette working together. I liked them actually getting their act together. I felt like the bad sound quality was a little like the concert quality? I would have liked to see a little scene of Rayna's daughters getting to meet Juliette but that might be soon.

I like Sean but he seems so perfect that their relationship feels a little doomed.

Avery has to live with this actions. It looks like it's working out for him. Marilyn is pretty gross though. It was nice to see Scarlett cutting loose but Gunnar implying she was loose annoyed me.

What would really have made it a good night would have been for them to bond a little over their shared dislike of the guy running the record label. He's been pushing them both around, blackmailed them both into doing the duet, and it would have been a nice moment if they had realized it.

Agreed.

EDIT: I wanted to add, that Rayna and Juliette seemed pretty sober when they got to the Ryman. I don't think they drank. On the other hand, a lot of the relationships on the show seemed sex based. Juliette used sex to hook Deacon. Marilyn used sex to start a business relationship with Avery. Hailey and Scarlett seemed to have their first one on one scene this series and Hailey was trying to get her laid.

You know, sometimes a few inches of fabric makes a big difference. Rayna and Juliette both had short dresses but Juliette's barely covered her butt. Every time she turned to the side, I kept looking at how short that skirt was. If her handlers thought the shoplifting incident was bad PR, how bad is it going to be when everyone in the front row posts upskirt pictures all over the internet? I thought it was funny that Rayna made it a point to talk about Juliette showing so much cleavage in the very first episode and then tonight she had on that low cut dress. Not that I'm opposed to cleavage, but I'm not the one telling people to cover up the girls and then putting mine on display.

I did like that both Rayna and Juliette interacted with Deacon while performing but without turning it into a catfight.

I really hope Liam doesn't end up hooking up with Juliette. He seemed a little too interested in being the meat in a Rayna Juliette sandwich.

It was Avery's show at Tequila Cowboy we didn't get to see. The concert at the Ryman was the Edgehill-Republic anniversary show, which Avery wouldn't have played, as he's not on the label.

I didn't get the impression they drank the vodka. The way Rayna dropped her head said to me that she was just a little disgusted at the fact Juliette was seriously suggesting vodka for breakfast.

I agree with you one hundred percent on the weed but this is CBS so I don't think we'll get that scene.

I do not understand the logic of "I respect you too much to have sex with you." Is sex an inherently disrespectful act?

I don't think Juliette and the quarterback are right for each other. She can't handle him, and he can't handle her. I don't understand why people who have deeply opposing values and belief systems date each other. You're setting yourself up for frustation and disagreements. It's not as though they can't find other people to date.

Oh, right, they need to create drama.

While Juliette was giving Rayna dirty looks during the song, I kept thinking, "Juliette, you do realize you'll have to record this song, right?" Their relationship is only just beginning. Juliette needs to get over her animosity.

Some great things; some not so good.

I loved seeing Juliette and Rayna interact and thought it was well played by both of them.

I am a little confused about what counts as songwriting on this show. So Rayna and Juliette wrote the lyrics but what about the music? They had no guitar etc, nothing they were listening to. So when someone is a songwriter they are just literally writing the lyrics? Then who writes the music? To me that seems to be the harder part.

Sorry for the digression. The song was okay - way too loud. I couldn't hear what they were saying. Loved Deacon and Liam playing guitar and having fun during the concert. They were good the whole episode.

I thought I liked Scarlett's voice until last night but it was terrible on ring of fire. Made my ears bleed.

The political story needs to end now and quickly. It is killing the show. I mean we just went through a big national election and I don't have the stomach for this blackmailing crap. Every episode it makes me not want to watch a little more.

Also about choir boy's tattoo - completely took me out of the story the minute he shirt came off. It was freaking huge and completely out of character for a guy who doesn't drink, stays in, doesn't have sex before marriage. I was so fixated on its massiveness I barely watched the rest of the scene. I checked online and that is a real tattoo of the actor/former boybander. They should have covered it instead of trying to add that lame line in about it.

Yes! I thought Rayna looked great, her dress showed her legs, but was long enough not to be tacky. Juliette's was so freaking short and the way she was walking/dancing around, I felt like a wardrobe malfunction was about to happen any minute!

Yeah, call me old-fashioned, but I think your dress should be longer than your vagina.

I concur with the sentiments about the political storyline. It literally killed that momentum of the show tonight. I love me some Powers Boothe, but it's the writing that makes this terrible.

When the QB Tebow'd out on Juliette, my heart broke for her. Her self-esteem is based solely on her sexuality, so I hope this story helps her grow up.

I love Rayna's new producer-and I am hoping for some "Mad Mrs. Leroy Brown" style awesomeness from their collaboration.

Scarlett is so boring. I have no idea why 1 guy, much less 2, are in love with her. Also, I hope the ghosts of June and Johnny Cash haunt her until death because of that ridiculously bad "Ring of Fire" rendition.

The Scarlett dislike on this thread is interesting to me. She's one of my favorite characters, but maybe it's simply because I find her stunning beyond reason and I love, love her voice. I know it's a predictable plot line, but I am majorly shipping her and the Sam Palladio character (who is also yummy beyond words even if he is sort of being an ass this week).

Nashville is my new favorite show, and I don't even feel that strongly about country music. I know it has its short comings, but I simply adore it.

It varies. Some people write words and music together. Some write just words and someone else writes the music. Or, as Paul McCartney did, the write the music first and then find the right words. ("Yesterday" was "Scrambled Eggs" at first.)
