As the world grows more dangerous and Lori's pregnancy advances, Rick locates a potentially safe haven.

Well, shit. Later Herschel.

EDIT - had hope for less melodrama before Lori got her exposition scene. Why?

Figures that the bulk of the black zombies would be at the prison. Thanks show.

I for one am glad it seems Rick has put Lori down. Serves the judge mental bitch right. There's no way the man could win with her.

ETA...I lose my hat running for the bus. How does that kid still have that damn Sheriffs hat???

Just as the words "If something happens to Hershel, I'm breaking up with this show" came out of my mouth, that happens. I hate everything.

It's crazy how much better this show it when no one's talking. It's not just the suspense and horror aspects--the actual drama of this miserable existence is so much more powerful in the quiet moments. That whole opening sequence, ending with them leaving the house they just cleared, was fantastic.

The group as a whole seemed to have gotten much smarter, and everyone was contributing. That alone made me love this episode. And Carol got a personality, and Carl's presence is no longer as frustrating, and a Lori without Rick doting on her is one I can almost sympathize with--especially when she was worried that her baby might actually kill her. That's intense.

Really great start to the season. I think it's gonna be a good one.

Holy shit is right!

Wow! They've learned how to shoot and fight effectively! Carl's not quite as much of an annoying pussy anymore. And Rick seems to hate Lori as much as I do! What's not to love?

But, oh no! Not Herschel...

That was a bit underwhelming. Not bad, just boring because too many scenes of hunting and skulking about the prison. They telegraphed Hershel being bitten by an arm and a leg.
At least Lori is putting her hair in a braid but of course it hangs to the side in front...Why did they not shoot Hershel after he was bitten? Are the rules changing now?

Oh my heavens that ending. The leg chop got me. Holy cow. I love when Beth or whoever said to Lori "this is a good place to have the baby". Um, what the hell! Even though I felt bad for Lori after that, and felt bad for cheering when she was worried about having an Aliens moment with her baby, Lori was her usual annoying self and I absolutely cannot stand her. Let Rick work, jeez!

I'm also shipping Darol. They have something there, even though it'll take all season to get to it. The "I'll go down first" line was hilarious.

It was kind of a hedge maze rather than a prison with all the open doors and gates around that place, but whatever. There also should have been a suffocating stench that just crushed them when they went inside. Dead rotting, moving bodies in an enclosed space, with a ventilation system that has to have long died? The smell would be unreal. Maybe the adults could shrug it off, but Carl would have vomited and Prego Bag-o-bones would definitely have tossed up an owl wing or two.

But really that last scene. Lord have mercy, Hershel is a goner and I just watched somebody hack into a leg with a machete on TV. Um, OUCH!

I had the same thought and found it really distasteful. I'm falling out of love with this show.

Just watched the opening scene again. I noticed when they were fleeing the house that the zombies chasing after their cars were fleet of foot!!! Is it by the show's design that the zombies develop/progress/advance every season? They seem a little faster and smarter every season.

I have always loved this about this show. When it's really good, there is no dialogue, and you just get to experience the show. If its success means that more shows follow it, it'll be all the better.

Carol got a personality

Indeed! I laughed at her "Oops" line or whatever it was, after she almost shot rick with the weapon she had.

Not sure how I feel about this episode. It was OK but I guess I expected more. I don't like the time jump, I feel like we've missed so much. Why do Carl and Rick hate Lori now? I'm not defending her but that's a pretty big change from the S2 finale. I also hate that we (non-comic book readers) have no insight into Andrea's new friend. I still have no idea who the walker companions are and why she keeps them. Plus the gang now has silencers (suppressors?).

I did like the interaction between Carol/Daryl it seemed liked they were almost going for a mushy romantic scene and then Carol just starts joking around. I like that dynamic very much. I also like that Carol now seems to be able to do something productive which is cool.

What's the deal with Carl and Beth? Please tell me they're just going for a crush there bc Beth that's just weird if they're going romantic...he's too young.

I don't really think you can play the racist card when the ridiculously over-the-top katana-wielding pet-zombie-having badass character is a black woman, not to mention T-Dog is finally more than a set piece this episode.

When the episode started, I was totally psyched. I was like, "Oh my god, they actually have picked up some survival skills! Yes! This season is going to be different, I tell you, different!"

And then they take Herschel, the only person with any medical training whatsoever, on a dangerous mission so he can get bit. No, that's great. That makes total sense, especially considering he's an old man.

I thought that was a sex joke, but I couldn't hear it well. Glad Carol has stopped being a dishrag.

When Lori said Carl hated her, that kind of threw me. I didn't see anything to suggest that, but maybe it'll show up later.

I couldn't believe Rick just cut off Hershel's leg like that, I guess everyone is used to doing horrible things.

Well considering Atlanta has a pretty big black population and we saw little of that represented in the first two seasons and now we see it in a prison...it certainly doesn't come across well.

Very good premiere, I missed the show! But Herschal noooooooooooo, I assume he's going to bleed out unless they can find the medical ward in time.

My mom and sister in law were freaking out over the final scene.

So, by chopping off Herschel's leg, he won't turn? Did we know that already?

When Lori was talking about "don't hesitate to put me down.." my 17 year old said "hell Lori, I want to put you down right now, that won't be a problem."

yeesh that last scene.

Apparently only Hershel has given up on hair care? It was cool to see every one change a little from the last time we saw them (Carol being more outgoing and somewhat being able to shoot/fight, Carl having more responsibilities, the group being really in tune with each other etc.) It was nice to see Andrea and her new badass friend's relationship, poor Andrea though, she doesn't look too good.

I liked the more lighthearted moments, too ("I'll go down first." and Hershel freaking Carl out while he was in Beth's bunk)

I think this is the first time that I didn't end up enraged at one of the characters at the end of the episode.

YpsiYvonne, you're right. Those are some damn fast zombies.

I loved the prison guard walkers with the face masks they had to lift up to stab them. Lots of really good gore and action.

We can only hope Lori's baby bites her from the inside. That would be great.

And why is he still T-Dog? Since they've decided to keep him around can they at least call him by his name? Trevor, Tyrone, Terrance anything but T-Dog.

I realized why Andrea's friend has those two pet zombies at the end of the season premiere. She is using them as mules. They are both carrying heavy gear on their backs.

I wish this season had started where the last season left off because I'd have loved to see how they survived the winter. Where did they manage to find silencers? Hell how did they manage to find food after abandoning the farm? But I do like the group being more cohesive, everyone is more skilled at putting down walkers with hand-held weapons. They don't even need to talk much which is an improvement.

I was curious about the prison during the whole episode. During a zombie apocalypse do prisons just get abandoned? Did all the prisoners die of starvation? How did they all die? So it was a great surprise to see surviving humans at the end.

It sucks about Hershel, wonder if amputation will prevent zombification?

I'm intrigued by Andrea's storyline but I wonder if she'll stay separate from the group for the whole season?

As soon as Herschel mentioned planting seeds I knew he wouldn't be around to see anything grow. Even if they keep him from turning immediately, how is he going to survive the amputation?

I thought I couldn't love Daryl more, but his "little Shane" crack to Carol killed me.

Are you sure the zombies weren't moving faster because they were grabbing onto the car? I remember they were starting to claw at it. Maybe when it drove away they stumbled forward faster than normal becaue they were being pulled by it. Except for a few annoying instances, the show seems to stick to the rule that zombie can only move in a slow shuffle.
