I'm sort of looking forward to this show airing on CW. Another medical drama yes but at least I can actually buy Mamie Gummer as a doctor compared to say, Summer Roberts.

The show is set to debut on October 16th 2012.

Synopisis

The series follows the life of Emily Owens (Mamie Gummer), who is a first-year intern at Denver Memorial Hospital, where she realizes that her med-school crush Will Rider (Justin Hartley) and her high school nemesis Cassandra Kopelson (Aja Naomi King) also work. Emily is not only the new kid once again, but real life is also just as awkward as high school.

More detailed synopisis: Here

Cast:

Mamie Gummer as Emily Owens
Justin Hartley as Will Collins
Aja Naomi King as Cassandra Kopelson
Kelly McCreary as Tyra Granger
Michael Rady as Micah Ellis
Necar Zadegan as Gina Beckett

The "cuz you're so cool" line in the commercials makes me cringe hard. I get that the character is supposed to be slightly dorky/awkward..but I was a little irritated. I've never seen Mamie Gummer in anything, can she act?

It would be amusing if she couldn't, considering who her mother is. Speaking of, I suppose nepotism can only goes so far if Meryl's daughter could only snag a CW show.

I liked Justin Hartley well enough on Smallville, even though he never quite managed to overcome sounding very flat while delivering his lines. Unfortunately, the promos are not selling the show very well at all IMO.

I wonder why they changed the title of the show from First Cut? The new title is a bit juvenile sounding.

I think Mamie Gummer is a decent enough actress and I definetly am finding her likeable in this show. The promotion for the show has been pretty bad but I'm hoping that it turns out to be decent.

Mamie seemed good in everything I've seen her in, but that consists of the Good Wife and Off the Map. So, neither really required a huge use of talent.

I'm not sure I'll be able to watch this though. I hate watching people embarrass themselves and it looks like that is the entire premise of this show.

Mamie Gummer's a good actress and she seems to be the focus of the positive reviews of the show, which say she's by far the best thing in it. The promos don't look that great and they seem to be going for a lovechild of Grey's and Scrubs but extra CW-fied with the even more constant high school references.

I'd take it over Hart of Dixie though. Mamie feels more relateable then most other lead actresses on the CW.

I agree that they'll probably ruin it with cliches and a petty love triangle.

Michael Rady's character is the only other one interesting me.

This show has been advertised for many months now. Makes me think it's not good since they keep repeating the same 4 clips.

The pilot is available and it's okay but not spectacular. It was pretty much what I expected from the previews. Hopefully it will get better. I'll give it one more episode.

Just watched the pilot. It was ok. A few cliches, but they can over come them. I'll give it the usual 3 episodes to decide. I like a lot of the actors in it, and it has possibilities. Needs a bit of focus, could be good.

Mamie really is her mother's daughter though.

I'll post more on the issues I have with it once more ppl have seen it

I watched the pilot, and I really liked it! It reminded me a lot about the 1990s TV shows on The WB.

Also, the cast is diverse.

I liked it, too. Emily/Mamie Gummer was great. I'm not a fan of medical dramas, so when I watch one it's because I like the cast. This cast was good and I can see all of them growing on the audience. If they lose the voice over (which was annoying and distracting), and the farcical music, I think this show could work. I get the feeling the network isn't confident about it though because it hasn't had any interesting promotion.

The parallels to high school are nice, but a little too blatant. They need to be toned down. I like the male leads. I like the "secrets" we're learning about. I'm looking forward to watching it, but I fear it won't last. Fingers crossed.

I liked this too. I love Mamie Gummar, the lesbian character, and Michael Rady's character. I'm still on the fence about the bitchy attending but Cassandra is one character that the minute she opened her mouth I knew I was going to want her to die in a fire by the end of the episode. They are really going to have to make that character more than just an unrepentant bitch because the actress is no Sandra Oh and her act is already wearing thin on me. I can't stand smug characters and this one has no good reason to be. I get it when it comes from the bitchy attending because at least she's accomplished something and is responsible for teaching them but it's beyond annoying when it's coming from a no-name intern on her first day who already thinks she's too good for the room without any proof.

There were a lot parallels to the early seasons of Grey's Anatomy, which I assume was done on purpose. There was way too much VO-ing in the pilot. I hope they tone it down in later episodes.

The pilot lacked subtlety, then again Grey's is the least subtle show in the known universe, so this was still on the better side of that.

The lead is clearly a likeable actress, and relateable, but they better be careful not to play that up TOO much. Then again, it might be better than the Hate-Watching people have to do with Grey's (with its lead, who certainly stopped being relateable a LONG time ago).

I loved it. I find Mamie Gummar very dorky funny and I liked her the most. Particular funny part was when she is going on about the day she had and notes that even her ring dings were... stale. <g>

But I didn't love Cassandra... silly I think to still have that kind of stuff going on and I can't quite see why the guy Emily had a crush on didn't like her back. I mean, unless it turns out he is gay. Seriously he was giving her all the green lights and she isn't exactly bad looking. Even her little patient thought he liked her. Please please please let it be something not cliche' -- like he is really intimidated by her or some such.

I am in... but sad it is up against my other favorite silly doctor -- the Mindy Kaling Project. Darn.

Caught the pilot on Hulu. I'm not one for doctor shows. I only watched it for Justin Hartley. (Not that I'm a fan, but Smallville took 8 years of my life, so I feel a strange need to support the actors when they're in other projects.) He was serviceable in the role. Mamie Gummar was very good and I was delighted to see Harry Lennix from Dollhouse. (Boyd was one of my favorite characters.)

Like I said, I don't watch doctor shows, so I can't comment on how original it is. I felt the alzheimer's plot was kind of confusing. I understand the daughter was toying with the idea of abandoning her mother, but she came back to the hospital. Why stall her and keep her from signing the consent papers? I didn't get it.

I found the pilot diverting, but I don't know if I'll continue to watch the series. It depends on how board I am.

This. I hate voiceovers in general, but this was annoying me even more than usual. I don't need them to spell out every thought or feeling Emily has. And it reminded me a lot of Grey's Anatomy as well - the bitchy attending walking through the hospital instructing the interns, the absurd amount of time the interns have to chat with patients about boyfriends and family matters, the speeches. The problem is, Grey's Anatomy did it a lot better (at least in the first and second season) and with better actors.
Apart from that, I liked the pilot. I thought Mamie Gummer's character was funny and very likeable, but I'm much more interested in the chief's daughter and the attending (?)
Spoiler
. Totally didn't expect that and even got a bit choked up.
If they keep the light-hearted tone and don't turn this into a "dark and twisty" sobfest, I'll keep watching if it stays on the air.

I thought the pilot was just okay. Emily was likable enough, only I tend to hate shows where people keep embarrassing themselves, and it seems like that could happen a lot here.

But honestly, I felt like this was Grey's Anatomy for teenagers.

I'm in the Ok group as well, the actors especially Mamie Gummer saved it from being terrible but it really does come off as a cheap and deliberate Grey's-for-CW knock off with the VO and highschool meme and general feel of the show. Mamie Gummer is likeable in the role, as was Tyra (she made that "coming out" line work when it could have sounded awkward) and Attending Gina? has potential and it's always nice to see Harry Lennox pop up. Justin Hartley was cute but he wasn't given much to work with in the pilot. I'll give it another couple of eps to see how it develops.

I enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting great television from the CW, so there was nothing to be disappointed about. I'm sure I would have had Emily-like qualities had I continued on the med school path.

Yes, it's premiering tonight. I hope that people give it a shot and a few episodes to warm up.

I hope people give it a shot but since it doesn't fit the CW norm of just beautiful people being either supernatural or rich, I'm going to be surprised if people even tune in for the premiere.

I enjoyed it. It was a little heavy on the voice overs and they covered a shit ton of ground regarding personal exposition of a lot of chaaracters in a short time, but it was fun. I agree that it's very S1 Grey's Anatomy in some aspects, but that was the season I liked most. When it was still fun. This show seems to be the fun side of GA with the lighthearted side distilled and the color palette brightened.

I so hope that Emily's many humiliations ease up going forward. Hart of Dixie went with the constant public humiliations for much of the first season and it wore thin.

In anycase, I'll watch it again.

I kind of agree with this reviewer.

http://www.vulture.com/2012/10/tv-review-emily-owens-md.html

I'm a little bored of the High School Defines Your Life moteif. I know it's a traumatic time for quite a few people, but doesn't anyone on TV get to college, have a successful experience and realise that these are also some of the defining days of your life, especially if they've just successfully completed Med School? Maybe it's because I met my "nemesis" a couple of years after HS graduation and realised a lot of that stuff (even the good parts) were no longer relevant to my life, or hers probably.

That said, the reviewer says it's much better next episode, so I'll defintely check it out, it could end up being a cute show.

I really hope they go somewhere less cliche than a love triangle/square between the Emily, the boys and Cassandra, but I'm not holding my breath.

So all the male leads were in other shows? I wasn't familiar with any of them, but I liked them. I wish the male love interest from The Mob Doctor was in this one. I never saw Friday Night Lights (where I think he's from) and thought there was something adorable about him in The Mob Doctor, but I gave up on that show.

I hadn't thought about Grey's Anatomy until I read the thoughts on this thread. I have to agree that Grey's does the better voice over, but I dislike it in both shows.
