For the writhing beach volleyball players, the hugging runners, and all the rest of the athletes. And the fans who love to love them.

Question, what if athletes are really homosexual and they show public display of affection? Does it count as Ho-Yay?

Not really. Ho-Yay! is defined as "unintentional homoeroticism between members of the same sex who are presumably straight in real life." In other words, it's more the unexpected appearance of homosexual overtones than the actual presence of homosexual activity (including deliberate PDAs between actual gay men or actual lesbians) that makes a Ho-Yay! moment a true Ho-Yay! moment.

So the nice lesbian kiss included in the images during the opening ceremony doesn't count but Misty and Keri never letting go of each other during the whole thing would.

The clip of the two girls kissing was from a UK soap opera called "Brookside" which is no longer on air. But in any case, it was a soap that did a lot of "first things" on TV including the first ever lesbian kiss on prime-time TV.

Speaking of Keri and Misty, when I watched their match last night the announcer talked about how Keri was supposed to compete with someone else until Misty decided she wanted to come out of retirement. When asked if it was a hard decision to drop the other girl and go with Misty, Keri's response was apparently, "It's Misty." It was made sound even more Ho-Yay since the announcer said it in this really wistful voice.

He said it like that because he explained that's how Keri said it- & that she was very choked up when she did. Ho-Yay, indeed.

Especially the Russian men's team who always kiss each other on the mouth.

Watching some swimming and one woman double-kissed another - on each cheek - but then the receiving woman looked at the camera like "yeah, she kissed me, what are you gonna do about it." I know she wasn't American, but I'm not sure who it actually was.

Do camera people count? Watching men's water polo there was a nice shot of a man's butt in a speedo, from the back, but still. I don't imagine there are too many female camera people, but I may be wrong!

I love swimming. Maybe not as much as Christian Sprenger and Cameron van der Burgh love each other though.

There was a lot of cuddling and whispering going on among the male divers watching the female competition. It was really cute because 1. they all seemed really relaxed and friendly with each (especially compared to the chilly men's swimmers pretending to like each other when forced to sit together before the relay) and 2. the whispering and cuddling was so they didn't disturb anyone else around them.

Sometimes you can have auditory Ho!Yay! I was driving home from the late shift listening to the Olympics on the radio and they were calling a water polo game (yes, I know - nothing without the visuals!) and one of the commentators, talking about an Australian player, remarked, "He can play at both ends, which you need to be able to do in water polo." Immediately my mind flew to this thread. Hee!

My favorite images of synchro diving are the underwater shots just after entry. The sudden arrested motion by water, and for a moment they're like magical water creatures, pure physique.

selkie, I was laughing at that so hard the other day, I nearly peed my pants. Because really, they hit every diver in the shower with that bar. Loved watching the British diver leaning against the shower wall with the bar covering him.

Oh, that's a gorgeous shot, Kev. I think the trying man would wonder about me if I put that on my phone.

That's priceless! I just choked on my morning coffee.

But the Ho-Yay thread hasn't been the same since the days of Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband! (wistful sigh...)

What about swimming commentators Dan Hicks and Rowdy (don't know his last name)?
Elbows touching, standing way too close to each other when there's PLENTY of space in the area, and looking longingly into the other's eyes when the other is talking. Come on!

Rowdy Gaines, and you're right. I half expect them to succumb to their passions and start making out, especially whenever Michael Phelps wins a gold medal.

Japan wins in an Olympic "shocker."

To quote Mr. Sulu, "Oh My."

And because this has been the XXX (triple X) Olympics Pay special attention to picture number 12 I believe. Water Polo, gotta love it. Bringing the HoYay while wearing Princess Leia caps. Is it me or is the one on the right thinking, "Can I help you with that?"?
