Wow. Is no one else watching this on AMC?

Last week I was taken by surprise by the surprise ending, although I knew something was up when they gave the big hint during the animated flashback to Dennis' past.

But tonight's episode was even more bizarre! What is up with Joan (aka The Chief)? Is she sedated or something?

She treats Dennis terribly. It's uncomfortable to watch. I don't know what's wrong with Joan but there's something. She just sits there & people wait on her hand and foot. He even brushed the crumbs off of her shirt! And the things she said about her husband. That is one weird relationship.

Last week it seemed like a fun, kooky show. This week I was disgusted by Joan.

It's horrible! I lasted about 2 min last week. Is this really real? Because these folks are wacko and unpleasant. Totally pisses me off that I have to find something to bide the half hour before Breaking Bad runs again to get away from this abyss of suck. I don't even want it on in the background. Only thing worse would be Bristol Palin. Hope they both disappear soon. UGH!

Ooh I'm glad there's a topic for this now. Joan and Dennis are so strange together. I really enjoyed last week but this week was hard to watch. I like Joan's husband and feel badly for him.

This is definitely one very strange show! I caught the first episode early Sunday morning, having missed the premier last Sunday, and then watched the second one Sunday night. Let me just say that two in one day is not recommended by me. LOL I thought at first that it was one of those show about a reality show, with actors playing the roles, but no, it's a real reality show - and those are the real people!!! It will be interesting to see how things evolve on the show; I think Joan is going to be very unpredictable. She kind of looks like Mimi on the Drew Carey show, though. Now I'll have trouble getting that association out of my mind ... geeze louise!

At any rate, glad to finally find a topic for the show.

I couldn't find a show thread, so I thought I'd start one...is anyone watching this? It's so strangely intriguing. I find these people incredibly confusing, but I can't look away. Anyone out there have any idea as to how much this is real vs fake?

Thanks! I used the search function, but nothing came up. I really, really want to know what is up with Dennis. This notion he has of being married to Joan throughout several lifetimes, well. I don't understand these people.

During the first episode I thought Dennis' attraction to Joan was strange and the whole love triangle aspect to it was bizarre. Then when it was revealed that Dennis was transgender I just couldn't fathom what was going on.

Then in the second episode when it was shown how disrespectfully Joan treats Dennis I was really puzzled by his devotion to her. I guess we will see in future episodes why he feels that way. It has to be more than this "past lives" nonsense.

And what is up with Joan's husband? I guess he isn't threatened by Dennis because he is transgender? Or he is just happy Joan is preoccupied with someone else so she will leave him alone to go off and not actually make sales calls. Weird.

Glad to see someone started a thread about this very odd show. Ringgold is a very small town, but one that is familiar to many Southerners because people of my parents' generation went there to get married because there was no waiting period. My parents married there, and many of my friends' parents did also. It's hard to imagine that there is much demand for security services in such a small community.

This show puts the real in reality for sure. It reminds me of the very first reality show called An American Family on PBS. On Sunday's episode you could actually hear the voice of someone on the production staff asking the husband questions.

It is like a freak show that I'm ashamed to admit I watch, but still is alluring in all its supreme weirdness. What on earth is Joan's appeal to anyone? She is slovenly (does she use a Sharpie for eyeliner?), lazy, and irritable. She treats her husband so dismissively, but he still flutters around and asks what he can do for her. And Dennis' attraction to her is truly a mystery to me.

I would bet that she is the butt of many a joke in the community, and her vulgarity probably wins her no friends. Wonder if they have children?

Wait. Time out. This is real??? I thought it was mockumentary style, like Spinal Tap or The Office. Am I being punked?

Nope, it is real. Here is the Wikipedia page about it: Wikipedia - Small Town Security

And here is an interview with Dennis from The Advocate: Transgender Surprise

So Joan was actually a teen singing sensation? And she actually has a public access television show?

Geez, I thought this was a really poorly written scripted show. Now I think it's a super weird reality show.

Joan's husband reminded me of Arthur Spooner ( King Off Queens) when he got his makeover done. lol, I watched all the way until Dennis was brushing crumbs off of Joan's shirt, and then I deleted it.

What was the reason why Joan had Dennis as her first guest on her TV show? Was it to out him because other then that I don't see why, and I don't see why Dennis agreed to on on. I don't think Dennis has to worried about everybody knowing his business because I think maybe 15 people actually watch 'Local access TV '

Basically the purpose was to exploit Dennis for the benefit of her show, but if you would have watched you would have seen it wasn't the first time. She began the show by showing a clip of when she had him on the show before he began to transition and was still Denise. What was really surprising is that this is all going on in very small town Georgia.

I am pretty sure most people in Ringgold already know he use to be a she. One, because Ringgold is still somewhat of a small town (it is right off Hwy 75 that is the Northerner's's Corridor to Florida)and two from what little I have seen of Joan I pretty sure she has made everyone she knows or runs into aware of it.

Speaking of Joan, what is wrong with her? Is she lazy, medicated, slow, mentally challanged WHAT? She barely moves...ever!

It would be interesting to see what people that live in Ringgold think of the whole thing.

There seems to be differences in her speech and alertness, so I would suspect some sort of medication is in effect at times.

Why is this show on AMC? Do the idiots in charge of AMC not understand the concept of branding?

And even if they really believed in the show, why is such a low rent reality show of Southern idiots (based on 10 minutes of viewing post BB) being paired with a high end glossy scripted show like Breaking Bad? Stick it on another night with Hardcore Pawn, or one of those Swamp People shows.

Joan and Parkinson's disease - now it's starting to make sense. Sort of. But "mix me up some whipped cream and peanut butter"..? And all that no-pants dancing? I hate to admit I've been drawn in, but I'm still not believing this is true reality TV. Apparently it's only been OK'd for 8 episodes. There will be a "gotcha" at the end.

Parkinson's! So that is what she is dealing with. Hmmm. I still wonder about her medication situation.

"Breaking Bad" is GLOSSY. Who knew?

I find it surprising that Joan doesn't take more pains with making herself camera ready since she has so desperately wanted to be a star. Even if she has a medical condition, you would think she'd make sure her hair was dyed and combed, that her clothes were clean, and that her eye makeup didn't look like someone used a Sharpie to line her eyes.

I bet the production crew can't believe their eyes and ears most of the time. Last night when Irwin was explaining what the stick was for (so gross and nasty!), it sounded like the camera man was beyond incredulous and skeeved out.

Is this really any worse than other reality shows? I don't watch them because they're all ridiculous in my opinion. These folks aren't any more repulsive than all the Real Housewives or the Kardashians. The only reason I watched this is because of the excellent Breaking Bad, and I gotta say that this show cracks me up. I could do without the excessive fart comments and the "shit stick"--but even that made me chuckle. I doubt this show will last but I intend to watch the rest of the episodes.

The AMC production crew makes the most out of every oddball in the show and I think they do a pretty good job of it. My heart goes out to Irwin, the two-tone-haired, shit-stick-using, hoarder husband. Not sure what is wrong with Joan other than she's a lazy, egotistical, wannabe celebrity who manages to find people who'll cater to her every whim. Even her little dog will bite anyone who tries to mess with her. I couldn't believe she actually peed her pants on camera.

I love this show. I didn't think I would even like it, but I do! I'd rather watch these "non-pretty" people than the image obsessed Kardashians and Housewives. These people are stranger than fiction.
