I caught this On Demand last week, and I've been told it's also available on iTunes. I'm not sure what to think just yet. I thought the whole beginning of the ep was super fake and contrived (big surprise, right?!) but it definitely has a different vibe than the TLC show.

Why do the promos make it look like Goodfellas? Is there a Gypsy mafia?

I thought the same thing. Totally fake. And it's too bad because NatGeo shows are usually pretty good.

Gonna pass on this one.

After the "bling, bling baby" from the TLC show, I'll give the first episode a try. To be honest, all reality shows are fake and contrived. Love Goodfellas and Gypsy Mafia comment..LOL!

Wow! This show is nothing at all like its TLC cousin. As someone said earlier, these folks came off more like the Mafia than gypsy.

So nice to see teenagers who actually looked and dressed like teens. Oh, but the best part was, they don't seem to be chomping at the bit to get married immediately upon coming of age. Yay!! Bobby seems like a really good, attentive father (well, beyond learning that his daughter couldn't read - shouldn't he have known that??), but I'm wondering what the deal is with his wife since she travels so frequently. I mean really, she's ROM, where is she going, and why?

Nick was just...yuck! I so wanted Bobby to just smack him dead in his fat, juicy mouth (that's not complimentary).

Val was a cutie (wait, is he Nick's son??), but he needs to take that hair down by an inch...or five. Its funny how Bobby's son was so into 'tradition', while Val wasn't; these two are the total opposites of their dads.

While the first epi was not bad, not sure if I will be tuning in to this again cause I didn't really like any of these people.

After watching a bunch of these "American Outliers" shows i learned that people have way too much power over others lives with all this "tradition" and "rules." Half of each of these shows consists of some kids trying to do something with their lives and the adults berating the crap out of them because it's not part of tradition.

I just makes me think that if there wasnt any of this stuff around we would probably be living in some sort of utopia with flying cars hanging out in the moon.

I wonder if saying that their kids are home schooled is their way of getting around pulling them out of school? I have no idea what kind of checking (if any) is done for home schooled kids to see if they're actually being taught anything, but it would explain why his daughter can't read. I wonder if his daughters are spending their days wiping the house down with bleach.

LOL. I kind of feel like all of them need a smack. The only one's who I can slightly sympathize with are Bobby and his younger daughters.

Wow. I'm not sure what I think of this show. It is very different than TLC's Gypsy shows. I could have swore I was watching a prime-time drama series instead of a reality show until the "confessionals". I'll probably keep watching. My take so far is this:

Nicky: an ass..plain an simple
Bobby: appears to be a good father and wants to support his daughter's ambitions, but deep down, I don't know about that
Erik: acts like the middle child instead of the oldest until it suits him to exert his "authority" over his brothers
Chris: a cheating ass..he boasted about how a man can be married and have flings on the side
Val: a charming ass, and the potential to be a cheating charming ass
Sable: not sure yet but seems happy and seemed happy for her little sisters in the end
Grandma Tina: a meddling bitch who wants to subjugate her granddaughters to being teen brides & brood sows
Grandpa Bob: an old goat who knows his days are numbered...at least he did show up for his granddaughters' play
Amanda and Vivian: very cute...look like what girls their age should without the bling, bling from the TLC shows

At least NatGeo has an interactive family tree http://channel.natio...ns-family-tree/ (WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS)

So much this! I'll go a step further and say it isn't about tradition at all. It's about power.

Are we going to see all of the Daughters-in-Law?? I would like to see Bobby ask his wife why their daughter can't read.

Well maybe if they actually went to a real school. Oh wait....that's against their "traditions"

I'm disappointed National Geographic apparently has decided to begin airing "candid" shows like American Gypsies and Meet the Hutterites that are so obviously staged with producer-driven, manufactured drama. National Geographic, you can do better. Something like American Gypsies is more suited for Spike or TruTV.

I felt like I was watching an episode of Goodfellas, but I think I'm going to like the show. I also want to know more about the female members of the family, aside from the family matriarch. It's a shame that Bobby didn't realize that Vivian couldn't read.

This. It seems like he stays on the sidelines while his brothers duke it out. However, he wouldn't think twice to pull the "eldest child" card.

Naah. I wouldn't put it on the same level as American Diggers or Operation Repo. =)

Nick - God, what a total jackass. Maybe listen to your dad? "Try the nice way first."

The Gypsy court really fascinated me. Stupid of the other guy to break the 3 block rule. But I floved it when the Gypsy elder was like, "If anything happens to them during that 30 days, he'll get to stay there forever." Haha

It broke my heart when Vivian was afraid to tell Bobby she couldn't read. I hope they get on that. At least get the basics down. Bobby seems like a really good guy. Maybe it's because he has so many children and is already at the "been there, done that" level with the youngest girls.

I thought it was sweet that Grandpa Bob came and saw the girls' play. I hope they saw him in the back.

I liked the pilot episode. It's a nice breather from My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding.

From what I understood, Vivian confessed she couldn't read "the big words". So, her reading level is probably 2nd grade or so by US standards. I wonder if she has a learning disability? Either way, I'm sure their homeschooling is atrocious (to put it mildly). Part of me really hopes Bobby supports his daughters in their acting, but I think he's just indulging them (nothing wrong with that). The fact that he kept telling his family it was no big deal leads me to believe he's not taking their ambitions seriously.

I quite liked Bobby and his girls. I hope we meet their mother...curious to see what she's like, especially since she's in charge of the girls' poor schooling.

This show feels like a spin-off of Mob Wives...and not necessarily in a good way. I wish NatGeo would have done this show more documentary style instead of scripted reality TV. I'll give it a few more watches, but I think I prefer my American gypsies trashy and covered in "diamonds."

I like this show. It's like a reality TV version of the Sopranos

They do seem different from the TLC version, but the TLC "gypsies" were Romanichals, a mix of English and Romani, who were brought here from England as indentured servants. The ones on this show are Romani, and are supposedly descended from India. The ones on the British version, are mostly Irish Travelers. Although, people group them all as gypsies.

I watched the TLC Gypsy show, so I'm kind of on a Gypsy kick now.... I got sucked into this show right from the beginning because the first scene was shot in my home town (Staten Island) and then when they mentioned one of the brothers (Jack?) lives in Staten Island... well now I have to watch, right? At least that's what I'm going to tell myself...

On topic --- I thought it was interesting that they use the word "Gaje" (sp?) to refer to non-ROMs as compared to the other Gypsy shows including the UK one who use the term "gorger" or some variant of that. It's just interesting to see the divergence of the language and the traditions amongst all of these people who refer to themselves using the term "Gypsy".

Oh and the previews of what is coming up looked pretty interesting to me, so yeah... I'll be there.

Where is everyone.

I find the show interesting. I have heard comments from other sites, saying the family has been ostracized for doing this show and have all gone missing. Their businesses in NY are all closed and no one knows where the family relocated too. Apparently, the NYPD is also investigating the family. If all that is true, oh boy, I think doing this show was a big mistake and I wonder what else is in stock, for people to come down so hard on them.

Boring, boring, boring. There is nothing interesting about these folks, aside from their hypocritical boasts about not mixing with "Gaje." I'm sure they willingly take their money in those "psychic healing" shops. The men are fat wannabe-thugs, and they all look the same.

I am enjoying the show as I've always had a fascination with Gypsies. I've taught Gypsy children and they would tell me some wild stories, which I didn't believe at the time.

I'm glad that Bobby addressed what has happened with his wife. I notice that the other wives don't appear on the show, with the exception of Chris's wife. Chris sure doesn't appear ready to raise a family.

I think it's sad if the family had to relocate. Ralph Macchio was on The Today Show and he didn't mention anything like that happening to the family, but maybe it's not something he would address.

Ok, I've got to say it was very rude to speak gypsy or whatever language it was in front of the realtor. If they had told her up front they didn't want a space that was near a cemetery, then the realtor wouldn't have showed them that space. She doesn't care about the whys, she just wants to help you get what you want so that she can get her commission.

I think Amanda and Vivian got a does of the real world when the agent or whatever she was came down hard on them. I have a feeling that ended their dreams of becoming actresses. About that, I think one of the brothers was trying to point out that if the girls actually got acting roles, it could bring good attention and publicity to the gypsy community. I loved it when later Erick tried to put Nicky in his place when Nicky barged in ranting about Bobby. Loved it!

If Bobby used his own money to help set up shop for Chris and Sam, then the rest of the family needs to back off. Who tells their grown-ass son who is now a grandfather what to do with his own money. I'm glad Bobby stood his ground on this one.

Does anybody have any links to these websites saying the family has packed up and moved out? When I do a Google search, all I get is links to the show or articles about the show. FWIW, somebody from the show (Bobby?) was on Twitter last night. My guess would be they are in Hollywood enjoying their 15-minutes of fame.

Funniest scene was when he went to tattle to the eldest brother, and the brother pretty much chased him out.

Interesting that Ralph is part of this assemble. As for my Romanian descent, my relatives say I have very strong Romany features, which I wondered why. I am pretty much a mixture of Romanian, Irish, Puerto Rican, and Russian Jew. But then I remembered a lot of kids during my school years from 1st Grade all to why Junior High. You'll laugh, but they all thought I was Italian and was related to Ralph Macchio. Funny thing is that I had very similar features to Ralph Macchio. If you seen how I looked then, I could have been his kid brother.
