I am surprised to read that this will be BBCAmerica's first original series, I thought Merlin was an original series. BTW if anyone else is curious, according to wikipedia there will be ten episodes this season.

Merlin is on the BBC; but it wasn't made by BBCAmerica as Copper will be. Merlin had previously been on SyFy.

On a related note, I've never understood why they stagger when the same episode airs in different countries.

I watched the 30 minute special Behind the Badge, which gives a behind the scenes look and interviews with the actors and creators. It's airing again throughout the week leading up to the premiere on BBC America. I am really looking forward to seeing the show.
If you have BBC America "on demand" it's there; I watched it on Monday, I can't wait! I hope it's good and not "Gangs of New York 2.0."

I watched the first ten minutes of it last week and recommend it to everyone. I also hope they don't turn the black character into the "incredibly noble and moral black man who suffers a bunch of indignities in silence." That's a precusor to turning him into the "magical negro"I watched the 30 minute special Behind the Badge, which gives a behind the scenes look and interviews with the actors and creators. Agreed. I wouldn't necessarily say lifeless, but definitely thin. I'll give it a few episodes to see how/if it develops.I have to agree with some of the reviews I read. The setting and production values are impressive but the performances/characters are lifeless.
I'll watch next week's episode though.

Tessa Thompson's acting hasn't improved much since "Veronica Mars". Pity for us.
Franka Potente's enormous dragon tattoo was terribly distracting. And not particularly appropriate for the time period.
The history nerd in me will keep watching this show because it's like "The Alienist" and "Gangs of New York" had a baby that wishes it were really the spawn of "Deadwood" and "The Wire". I'm along for the ride...

I rewound and paused several times during the opening scene when Corcoran was peeking through the slats, and I'm almost certain I could see the contact lens on his left eye. I'm pretty sure that wasn't appropriate for the time period, either. But I'll keep watching, too, for the same reasons you gave.Franka Potente's enormous dragon tattoo was terribly distracting. And not particularly appropriate for the time period.

The character is European yes? So I don't find it unbelievable that she might have gotten a tattoo before she came to America. She seems to be a pretty rough and tumble character.
I can't really blame the producers or the actors for us being able to contact lenses since it is on HDTV :).

Both whores had tattoos, didn't they? As well as Corky's friend Francis.
Wow, dark. A little levity would not be a bad thing. But I'll keep watching. It's different from anything else.

All I kept thinking about was "The Alienist" and "Deadwood". Despite my forever jones for Timothy Olyphant I never could get into "Deadwood". I also couldn't get into "The Wire" but I count "The Alienist" as one of my favorite books ever. I have "Gangs of New York" on DVD and have yet to watch it.
The actor who plays the doctor who did the autopsy on Kate was interviewed along with the two leads on NY1's NY Times Sunday Arts section. The actor didn't believe that there had been an African-American doctor in Five Points after the riots that were referenced in the show but there was. He's based his character on that man and his life.
I will keep watching this. It kept my attention from beginning to end something that's a rarity these days.

Ha, I thought the same thing. The other thing I noticed was how dark many of the scenes are. While I appreciate historical accuracy with the lighting and all, I would be willing to overlook a little bit of inaccuracy if it meant that I could clearly see who was in some of those darker scenes. It's mostly an issue with the male characters since the only female characters are little girl, rich English wife, Countess in charge of the fancy brothel, and other prostitutes (who thankfully have different hair colors). The men, on the other hand, are sometimes hard to tell apart right away since they dress very similarly and many of the locations (alleys, indoors, etc) are dark.Well, everything looks appropriately filthy.
Although I actively route for VM alumni to do well, but I did not have high hopes for Tessa Thompson. I set the bar so low she could step over it (TM Logan Echolls) and she still managed to disappoint me. Hopefully her role won't be very big on this show. I'd be fine if they kept her as a tertiary character who we only see every once in a while when Corcoran barges into the doctor's house late at night.Tessa Thompson's acting hasn't improved much since "Veronica Mars". Pity for us.
ITA - the sets, costumes, etc all looked very realistic. I almost always give new shows a few episodes to find their rhythm so I'll tune in for a few more weeks (at least until the fall season starts). The setting and production values are impressive

I wished some of the scenes were lighter too, it was hard to see.
Don't have HDTV so I couldn't see the contact lenses.
I thought it was really interesting seeing NYC at this time; and people think shit is bad now! Damn, most of us wouldn't have made it through that, NYC was a lot more crowded because everybody was crammed into the same space, the subways didn't exist yet.

Definitely. The whole child prostitute storyline is really skeezing me out and it doesn't look like it's going away any time soon. I do like the way the cops go about roughing up suspects though.
Yeah, I forget with shows set in the past that the lighting is not going to be good. I remember that in Crouching Tiger and John Adams. I agree that I don't mind a little dramatic license being taken there.
I'm trying to pin down an exact date for the show. It's 1863 and the Civil War is still going on. They're mentioning McClellen is going to run for President against Lincoln but it has to be at least a year for the election of 1864. I believe it was in 1863 that a notorious draft riot took place in NYC.
