I am a true BB loyalist since episode 1, season 1 and I want to dislike this show. That said, I just finished the player intro videos and can see that they are trying to go for the early BB older skewing mix of contestants but they are mostly meh to me. My first thought is that I hope the way that the intros were shot, with that stedi-cam effect, is not indicative of the rest of the show because that was really unappealing.
Not speaking for me but in general, observations of why I think BB has been such a popcorn summer success in comparison to what this show is doing:
-- 24/7 feed -- if you want the audience to be participatory in all things happening in the house, you can't offer a limited look. People who watch this show in the "real time" aspect want to know what's happening all the time. I don't have the time to watch the feeds like I did 10 years ago, but I sure enjoy spending my limited free time watching highlights on YouTube and reading the fan sites with real time updates. There is no telling when drama is going the ensue. It is part of the fun. Otherwise, the show doesn't need to be real-time.
-- Bimbo cast members -- I appreciate that there are some mom and dad types and I, personally, don't love the overabundance of BB castmates who have been fake blonde, fake boob, Jesse and Rachel types, but they bring the drama and the party and the ratings (not to mention, they look good in bathing suits and appeal to the live feeders). No offense to the Glass House mates but some of them don't look like they should be on television at all, much less in bathing suits.
I loved season one of BB because they were real people to me. Plus, the concept of the show was new and reality TV had not gotten to be what it is today. I would spend afternoons cleaning my house with the feed up, just listening to real conversations. Since the audience voted for nominations and evictions, there was no scheming and no alliances, just real talk. It also made for what is considered to be "boring" television. I imagine that is going to be the case here.
The lawsuit should be interesting. Exec Producer Kenny Rosen admitted in his deposition last week that he used the Big Brother "bible" and the master control list (that he obtained during his several years as an EP on Big Brother) to determine what positions he would need to hire for Glass House, among other things. This is a big no-no as far as the non-disclosure agreement and trade secret misappropriation. We all know that copyright infringement is not the biggest problem that ABC has here. It's the senior executives and dozens of former BB staffers. That's like being a manager at a Starbucks and then deciding to leave and take half your staff of baristas with you to open a new coffee shop across the street. The address and name is different but the staff and operation look the same from the inside. It doesn't guarantee success because people know and love Starbucks. It may be more expensive and taste the same, but it's tried and true.....
Can't wait to see what happens. I will be watching. Oh, by the way, someone from my somewhat small suburban city is finally on one of these shows. Andrea. I hope she is worth rooting for.
EDIT: I logged on to the main site and the live feed is up and the house mates are doing some matching game based on polls that they audience is taking. I tuned in a bit late so I am not sure what the point is. And there are suitcases all around with some people all made up. I can only assume that they just moved in to the house either today or yesterday. I am somewhat bored so far.. Is it okay to comment on the feeds now or do we have to wait until the show airs on Monday? And, btw, there is a graphic up that says the live feed is up from 3-4pm est. I imagine that is when they will be doing challenges or some sort of activity worth watching.
