This is a thread for the Danish series Forbrydelsen, the original source material for AMC's The Killing.

From Wikipedia:

The Killing (Danish: Forbrydelsen, "The crime") is a BAFTA Award-winning and Emmy-nominated Danish crime TV series produced by Danmarks Radio. Each series follows the police investigation of one specific case, day by day, with a one-hour episode covering 24 hours of the investigation. As of 2012, there have been two series, with a third in production.

Based on my experience with other shows that haven't aired in the U.S. and seemingly have no immediate future of doing so, I'm going to assume the mods would prefer this thread not be spoiler-tagged (otherwise it would be nothing but black bars). I've also seen mention that the showrunner of The Killing has made it clear that it won't be the same killer. (At this point in The Killing's progression, it actually cannot be--something I assume Veena Sud did intentionally to prove she really did mean it.)

That said: I first started watching The Killing because of Mireille Enos; there was so much talk of Forbrydelsen on the early thread posts that I tracked it down online. I loved S1, even with its red herrings (20 episodes' worth). It hasn't made The Killing look so great in comparison, although a lot of elements are pulled directly from it.

Anyway--hoping to scare up some others who have seen the original, so we don't have to talk behind black bars in The Killing's thread.

Correct! Talk away. If a dubbed or subbed version of this show actually shows up on US TV, that may change, but until then, no spoiler bars (unless you come across spoilers about the third season which is supposedly in production).

So glad to see this thread. I’ve been dying to dish.

Overall I really enjoyed S1 though it was by no means perfect. The first thing that stood out was how similar the characters and plotlines were to TK with huge exceptions:

Meyer is married with children
Nanna was raped but died from drowning
Hartmann was never shot by Vagn
Pernille did not abandon the family, though she did briefly lose her mind
No phantom bio dad storyline
Lund's fiance helped investigate on his own
No casino

The identity of the murderer made sense with a connection to the family and new house.

This is why I'm leaning towards the Terry theories--since they killed Belko, she now most closely fits the Vagn archetype (someone very close to the central family who clearly has issues with relationships and adulthood, as well as some amount of conflict about their own place in that family).

I suppose it's not too late for it to still happen, but my gut instinct is also that The Killing would have never taken the route Forbrydelsen did with Meyer, which took serious balls.

I've been working my way through Forbrydelsen II, but it's a little harder going--it's just as interesting, but there is a lot more in-your-face violence and bloodshed right out of the gate.

They did a bit about this show on a recent AbFab. Edina buys the boxed set and watches it. Saffy asks her about understanding the show in Danish, and Edina says that Danish is easy to pick up. Then she has a dream where the actress from the show turns up in her bedroom looking for clues, and Edina starts speaking to her in gibberish. The lady asks her what she's saying, and Edina says, "I'm speaking Danish". The actress says "No, you're not."

The original made the political wrangling absolutely riveting. I can't think of another word. You literally didn't know if Hartmann was a good guy or a bad guy until the very end. That's an amazing feat. And I had read who the killer was before I found a way to watch the series and I kept thinking that I had misread it because watching the show, I thought no way was it Vagn. The image of him standing there in that Sara '84 shirt was chilling. The way they made everything tie together with Rosie's impending marriage was great - I didn't see that coming. And the strength of the Larson's marriage was almost another character. I actually felt sorry for Vagn when they wouldn't let him take the boys shopping for toys and then the dog - how would Pernille let Anton keep the dog that he wanted so badly when it came from that monster?
