Just aired on the revived Toonami, and... What the Fuck, man? That was gory, and depressing, and bleak. And I think I want more.

Thread Subtitle ripped off from ninjawirehead in the Toonami thread.

I am honored Last Time Lord. :) And I agree with your assessment. I see potential in the series, it is just a matter of being able to stomach the gore and bleakness.

A Brief Analysis:

Igarashi Ganta: Hi! I'm an ordinary boy, living an ordinary life! Oh, and there's an amusement park starring hardened crim-

Man In Red: KILL KILL MAIM KILL KILL KILL FUCKING KILL REND KILL MURDER MURDER MURDER KILL KILL

Ganta: Um . . . are you Alice Cooper?

Man In Red: BADTOUCH!!!!

Authorities: Wild guess . . . you're the culprit.

Ganta: Me? How the fu-.

(short time later)

Ganta: Holy crap, there's an actual lynch mob for me, I'm getting my ass beat twice, and I've been framed for mass murder. When Japan does depressing manga, they do it right.

Tamaki(?): (posing as Sleazy Lawyer) Wow . . . no way to appeal your case, now that we got footage of you bragging about your crime! And even though we live in technologically advanced times, nobody will believe that you've been set up! BYYYEEEE!!!!!

(Deadman Wonderland)

Makina: Welcome to Deadman Wonderland, aka Shawshank Superjail at Impel Down, located in Belle Reve, Arkhamvania. I am the chief warden, though you may call me "God." Speaking of things that start with a "G" . . .

Ganta: Really hard to get an erection when I'm in the untold fifteenth circle of hell. I want to fucking die so bad.

Shiro: You do? (swinging at Ganta)

Ganta: Cool it, Eureka!! I mean, Mysterious All-White Girl!!!

Shiro: You wanted to die! You lied to me! (looking for a giant frying pan)

Tamaki: . . . and now to do some work on the park . . . (blows up the facade, or whatever it's call)

Ganta: I WANT TO LIVE!! SO GO FUCK YOURSELF DAD!!!! (saves Shiro)

Shiro: (coughing) You'r . . . you're not Shinji . . .

Ganta: Are you sure? God knows this is depressing enough . . .

Apologies if I goofed on any of the details. I've only seen the episode once, and I hit Wikipedia for names. Last Time Lord is right, though . . . as bleak as all hell this may be, it's interesting enough to tune in next week.

One episode in, and we've already have an Abridged Series.

Is that a record?

I think Latern is building off the full season sub that aired months ago.

Although it was brutal and gory, it still seems heavily edited from what I remember. The massacre was much more bloody and graphic. They kept in a lot of cursing, which I always appreciate. Glad to see that they got someone whiny to do Ganta's voice. I'm going to regret saying that down the line, since he never stops whining. Not that he doesn't have just cause, but seriously, it does become tiresome after a while.

Anyone know when the second season debuts in the subs?

No they haven't even done a second series of the anime to begin with.

Also they are still showing enough gore, cursing etc to get people who want more of the series to buy the dvds/blu-rays.

Hate torrenters who complain about stuff not being made when they don't comprehend that they are the reason stuff isn't getting produced.

Ganta's voice actor sounds a little like he's channeling Beast Boy from Teen Titans.

I guess [as] won't be showing the original closing credits. Not that I blame them, since they're fairly boring.

Best lines of the episode:
G.Random Prisoner - "Woah! The bitch is nuts!"
Sword Wielding G-cup Lady - "I don't disagree. But get used to it."

Great, another anime series that makes no frikken sense. I noticed that nobody even attempted to explain how a young boy could slaughter all of his classmates in such a horrific manner with none escaping or him not being saturated in blood head to toe. Also, other than that one sketchy video he has no record of disturbing behaviour or being an anti-social loner.... whatever.

A G-cup sounds gigantic but Japanese cup sizes are smaller than US cup sizes. A G-cup in Japan is an E-cup in US bras. Still impressive though.

I DVRed this from last night, so I was able to re-watch it today. Even though the main plot point (Ganta being accused, tried and convicted of wiping out his entire class) really, really turns me off, I still want to give it at least a few more episodes to get rolling, so to speak.

Hate torrenters who complain about stuff not being made when they don't comprehend that they are the reason stuff isn't getting produced.

Total agreement.

It takes a few episodes of the anime for things to get explained to make sense. Apparently the manga is more detailed and more gory.

I have watched a few animes like that where you didn't get the important background as to the world until five or ten episodes in. Now the anime before the revelation was quite good so if you decided to hold on you got rewarded as to the backstory of the world and things made perfect sense as to everything you saw before.

Info dumps need to be handled right and sadly a lot of people either do too much exposition and do it badly at the start which turns people off. Then you have the other method which requires stuff to get you interested to continue watching till the info dump takes place whereupon the blinds get lifted and you see the world as it is.

The kid's lawyer was shown to be one of the people with wonderland, wasn't he?

I got the impression the trial was a sham from the start.

Yeah, something about Ganta's only realistic/feasible option is to be his PD's "latest/newest plaything."

A G-cup sounds gigantic but...

I love they way that she just answers the question without hesitation. That's a psychologically threatening question, but she's tough enough not to give a damn.

Given her casual approach to violence, I'm suprised the warden isn't an inmate there. :P

Really liking it so far, although yes it's quite bloody.

It appears the Warden (voiced by The Major?) really works for The Lawyer, if I had to guess.

The guy that asked about her boob size didn't even get a second glance, but the guy stealing supplies (and putting them in Ganta's sack? What exactly happened there?) gets sliced up. Her priorities are interesting.

The most amazing part of the episode? Somebody actually lays a finger on a Magical Martial Arts Girl, and she stays down! Has that ever happened before? Not quite convinced she's an inmate, but she has an interesting collar.

Apparently next week we get to meet the rest of the inmates, at which point this will seem a lot more like the typical high school setup :( .

Hang in there. It gets a whole lot weirder down the rabbithole. Typical high school shoujo/shounen crap this certainly ain't. It has its moments of treacle, but that's usually followed by a beheading or disembowelment. You know, if you're into that kinda thing. :)

The guy had stolen Ganta's candy which
Spoiler

His moving the cart around was a way to cause a scene in order to lift the candy but the Warden caught it hence why she was saying to give the candy back to Ganta.

The scenes at the end showed certain inmates eating candy with a guy in a hospital bed looking at a piece of candy and smiling. That guy was the one the Warden had slashed. Watched the episode twice and it clicked as to who he was and why he was smiling while holding the piece of candy.

lathspel, I think the Warden's voice actress is Coleen Clinkenbeard. I agree that it did sound like Mary Elizabeth McGlynn though and I was certain it was her until I looked it up.

I'm pretty sure she said "chief warden".

The candy thing makes more sense now - I didn't recognize the guy in the hospital.

Given what we know so far about how that madhouse is setup it's pretty obvious it's gonna be social-darwanism to the n-th degree. I imagine next weekends episode about the 'candy' will ram that home.

Anyone else excited for episode 2 tonight or rather early tommorow morning?

The subbed episodes are up on funimation.com as well as hulu plus. Noticed a few differances though. For some reason the subbed episode was darker to the point where you couldn't see the red man or much of anything in the school room after he killed everyone but Ganta. Not sure if it was my monitor but everything else comes through looking normal. Starting in Episode 2 there is a music intro which episode 1 doesn't have. Perhaps the intro will be shown in episode 2 and so on on toonami. Dialog seems more natural and carries more emotion in the English dub then the Japanese dub.

As for cursing in episode one of the subbed Ganta's confession shown off has bleeps in it which makes me wonder if the dvds will have the bleeps in the confession since the confession is supposed to have been shown on tv as a special report so they would bleep out his vulgarity.

As for removing blood etc I don't think toonami edited out any.

Last Time Lord . . . I wouldn't consider my random vignettes "abridgements." I don't have the tech or the voice to compete with the big guns of the genre.

Punkinetta . . . I swear, I never watched the show before last week. I was just going off first impressions . . . bizarre, brain-wrecking, shit-your-pants first impressions. Speaking of which:

Ganta: ARE YOU BASTARDS NOT ENTERTAINED??!!????

Random Patron #1: The kid is yelling something. Can you make it out?

Random Patron #2: Huh? I'm too busy tweeting about how the race had no winner. What a friggin' rip.

Ganta: (sighing) I should be thankful the producers didn't pipe in "I Want Candy" and be done with it.

I'll have to catch the whole thing later. Right now, I'm thinking that this show is like watching a puppy get beat up, yet it doesn't die.
