11-40: "Grand Finale" 2012.05.23

Man, I don't know any of these people. I watched one performance from Jessica, or Diet Charice Pemengnananana or whatever her name is, after my mom was, "child, it's this girl on American Idol who sounds just like Beyonce, but I don't think they know who her daddy is". After watching her sing "Fallin", I have to agree that her dad is probably Desmond Hatchett. Poor thing. I don't know. It's probably just Thia with a name-change.
I saw Phillip Phillips sing "In the Air Tonight" and "U Got it Bad" and, eh, I can see why he's this seasons It Guy. WGWG, he looks a little itchy, he's got the "aw shucks" thing down, and he's from the South. He was destined for Top 3, at least. That said, he basically sounds like Cookie Monster singing along to the classic rock station on his way to his third shift job.
So, yeah.
Phillip sings with Mr. Fogerty. I carest not.
Diet George Huff sings with Fantasia, who's apparently found some 22in Remi off-black and draped it on her head. Josh Ledet seems like he would've been fun to watch all season, but really, they could've got George to sing this song again. He's...probably available.
Also, Randy sit your motherfucking ass down.
The rest of the Top 12 heifers. Why is Adele up here? Why are they singing Chaka Khan songs? Why is Chaka Khan and her ass ass ass ass ass ass ass ass up here in a ill-fitting catsuit or whatever the fuck those things are called. First Fantasia's crazy ass, now her. This must stop. Y'all hos are not Lil Kim and you should be thankful for that.
Rihanna and her goat vocals. Yawn. I have to say, though, I have a new-found respect for Rihanna. Because even though Chris Brown hit her ass with Yoga Fire and three or four hadoukens and made her motherfucking look like Scottie Pippen, she still forgave him and made a kick-ass song. I think she's saved. Anyway. Chick I don't know with Reba (who has a strangely sexy older woman vibe). The dudes sing. Yawn.
I liked the phone book skit. If it wasn't pertaining to Randy's corny, blueberry ass, it would've been better.
J. Lo, why are you performing this ho shit? Shouldn't you be tucking your boyfriend into bed? It's getting late. With his young ass.
Did this shit with Ace and Diana DeGarmo really just happen? Am I asleep? For real, y'all. I didn't even know they were dating. Isn't Diana like 19 and Ace is, what, 36 or 37? Why does he have Scott Stapp hair? I mean, really? Did you guys think, back in 2006, that Ace would be marrying Diana DeGarmo? It really is the end of the motherfucking world because y'all are just doing any goddamn thing. On a positive note, Diana has some ass, though.
Also, is it just me or is P2 chilling for the most part. I mean, I've seen his ass maybe twice tonight. Hmm. (I know it's probably because he just had surgery, I think, but I'll just indulge in conspiracy theory for now).
Jennifer Holliday and Jessica singing "Rosa Parks". Wooo, I'm glad that's over. Towards the end they scared me so bad I'm about to call my mom to come over and get in the bed with me because I know I'm gonna have some nightmares. All those gutteral, tribal noises and their mouths wide open. I thought they were going to eat me. But this crazy diva moment just proves that COOOOOKIES OMNOMNOMNOMNOM is gonna win.
One thing I will note before the results: I think, without fail, the person with the best duet usually loses. Which means...
See? I told you. Touching to see him choked up, but dude, this Mumford & Sons shit isn't going to sell but five CDs. Oh well. Did he just bail on his coronation song? OK?

Man oh man, take that all y'all who say Jessica is merely a mimic. She held her own with a true legend and took a decidedly different track. Her pipes should forever be mentioned among the greatest of Idol. She proved she will be a yooge star! Congratulations to her, as well.
AeroFREAKINsmith showed us all, children, what Rock & Roll can be. They keep proving that they can be considered the greatest legacy of Rock in this day.
Joshua pretty much ruined everything he touched tonight. Credit to everyone in here who saw him in this way. I did not - until now.
Here's hoping that is the last time Jessifer ever darkens an Idol stage.
Nigel has his work cut out for him else this be the penultimate season.

That finale had a lot of Joshua in it. Did he carry the show?
BTW, does anyone know what Fantasia's superheroine alter ego is? Frog girl?

Oh, and I'm going to have nightmares about Fantasia's outfit for weeks.

Ace, Diana and the proposal were cute. Carrie Underwood looks amazing. Loved seeing Taylor Hicks.

Jennifer Holliday's face while singing made the night for me. That's some scary stuff.
I really thought Jessica had it this year, if she can't win vs. a mediocre WGWG I'm not sure what hope a female has.

Jessica and Jennifer Holliday SLAYED that song. That was incredible.
Loved Fantasia and Mantasia performing together. They were fun and I continue to be horrified and amused by Fanny's fashion choices.
JLo was terrible and she lost her dance skills. Sad. Hopefully with her leaving that means she won't perform on the show again.
The singing the phonebook bit was cute.
Meh on the winner. I'm ready for SYTYCD.

I don't know if I'll see anything more surreal than Colton getting all excited to introduce...Neil Diamond. Woo!
I'm happy for Phillip and loved his emotion. Also loved Jessica seeming to be very excited for him.
Shannon is eleventy-seven feet tall. Why was she in six inch heels and standing next to Skylar?

He must have been in a lot of pain. They had him sing first and then he isn't in the show again until the duet with Jessica and he's sitting down for it. Just get the damned surgery!!
Fantasia is seriously crazy (did it look to anyone else like she split her jumpsuit up the sides when she put it on but said ef it and wore it anyway) but boy does she have pipes and crazy performance skills.
And I guess Chakka Khan shops at the same place....did she even sing any of the lyrics?
Loved Jennifer Holiday and I have to admit Jessica held her own... until Jennifer decided to give her a class on emoting when you sing.

Aerosmith was amazing. Steven Tyler's still got it after all these years. Sad to say he's the one the Idols really should be taking advice from. Too bad he's incomprehensible in his critiques.
I was torn between hysterical laughter and utter awe during that Jennifer Holliday/Jessica duet. The vocals were unbelievable, but good lord Jennifer Holliday pulls some weird faces when she sings. When her head just popped into the frame with Jessica, I lost it.
I cannot wait to see PP sing the national anthem. And that's all I have to say about that.

The second she stood next to Holliday, she started copying her facial expressions and her singing in general.
The only singing I enjoyed was the Reba/Skylar duet and Aerosmith. Rihanna was ok.
What happened to the Donna Summer tribute? And the Kristin Chenoweth duet with Jessica? Hmmm.

There's no hope.
Actually, there is hope. On The X-Factor.
A female (Crystal) already tried to play the same game. But alas, no penis, no win.

Congratulations on the victory, P2--now you gotta earn it.
He can start by sweeping up the stage confetti. Major eye roll when Ryan handed PeePee that stupid guitar. At least now we know it's not physically connected to his body. His final song.....a total waste of TV time. A real snoozapalooza.
PP's winner announcement was so anticlimactic, even Ryan sounded bored saying it.
Maybe Ryan forgot his last name....? For that matter, the squeeing teen girls will probably forget his name when the next cute WGWG comes along in 3 months.

Wow. That was underwhelming. Every year the same guy wins.
Ace, Diana and the proposal were cute. Carrie Underwood looks amazing. Loved seeing Taylor Hicks.
This pretty much summarizes my feelings about this finale. Still, I LOLed at Ace's product placement during his proposal (hope he got a good discount for that). I'm a total sap.
What does it say about this season that the thing I remember best about the finale was seeing previous seasons' Idols? Taylor looks great, Carrie is beautiful (as always), and so is Jordin. Fantasia's choice of attire was tragic.
Oh, I kind of enjoyed the phonebook bit. Other than that? Reba is always a treat.
Is there anyone who is surprised that Phillip won this thing?

I totally had flashbacks to that when Fantasia started screaming. I laughed when the show did actually cut her off to go to commercial.
Next year they should really just make the finale 20 minutes long, which is all the watchable footage there ever is anyway.

I knew America would vote for him.

Did Phil just basically go whatever, stop singing and walk off the stage? That's how it looked to me.
Geez... are you really that clueless to what a kidney stone/disease patient with a stint implanted running from his kidneys to his bladder is feeling? It's constant pain. I've done it, I know. He was overcome with emotion, he's been holding on for weeks just trying to make it to the end and if he wants to go hug his family, good for him.
I kept saying in my head "Can't Touch This" when JLo was dancing around in those silver baggy pants.

Seriously though, he's WGWG 5.0. FIVE. How can the show expect anyone to care if the same person wins ever freakin year? Him walking off stage without even singing? Couldn't think of a better end to this season.
As far as the show itself, I loved the phonebook choir skit. Hilarious. The Ace/Diana moment was awkward but cute. They were so nervous. Loved Skylar and Reba. Hollie and Jordin sounded great, although I was a bit disappointed it turned into a reprise of one of the most overrated performances in AI history. But the fact that Rihanna was the only current performer (not counting whatever J.Lo did) is pretty pathetic.
I guess you can always count on Fantasia to bring the WTF. What was she wearing? Scary.
Carrie & Bo did a duet of "Up Where We Belong" on the Season 4 finale. Guess who's was better.
So done with this show though. Pee Pee was going to win from day one, and that's sad. Thanks to Elise, Skylar, Hollie, and Erika for making this season not a total waste. It's been fun, AI, but you've dug your own grave. Peace out.

I forgot how charismatic and fun Colton and Skylar are on stage. Sorry they didn't go further.
I don't know, I acknowledge that P2 is brave to keep going while ill but it seemed really off for the winner to have performed so little tonight. Cute ending though, with his family.
it seemed really off for the winner to have performed so little tonight.
Try singing in front of an audience...or anywhere...with a mule kicking you in the back and the bladder. That's what it feels like.
Yes yes. I'm aware of that (how could we not be at this point!). Hence the first part of my sentence. I mean in terms of TV "spectacle" or whatever - odd to have the winner missing in action.

Jordin and Hollie were adorable at the end with their hug. I like those two.
Skyler did a nice job with Reba.
Jennifer Holliday was out of this world. Jessica still does nothing for me.
I always like Aerosmith.
The phone book stuff was fun.
Anti-climactic ending, but I was really happy that Phil finally seemed to care. Was he happy? Sad to be singing a song he didn't like and realizing that he would never be a legitimate artist? In terrible pain? Who knows, but I'm glad he expressed whatever it was.
Ace made me extremely uncomfortable. It felt like I was watching the last episode of the Bachelorette or something. He just does not seem legit.
I miss the triumphant endings of Kelly and Fantasia in seasons past... remember when the Idol finale was an EVENT? When the finalists left it all on the stage? (Clay: Bridge Over Troubled Water?) These last two nights were so... blank.

Next season of American Idol auditions will be held at your local coffee shop.
Dude, seriously. They might as have the whole thing at The Bitter End in NYC. I can appreciate a good singer-songwriter, but it's American Idol, not Starbucks.
