Matthew Perry returns to NBC in the fall. After watching the preview, I think I'll tune in. I laughed out loud a few times just during the 3 minute video, so I'm hoping that's not all the laughs in the whole pilot.

I really love MP, so I hope this one makes it!

Tough timeslot for this one - it goes against New Girl and Happy Endings. May not be a good sign...

I think the preview looks worse than Mr. Sunshine did. Maybe just a bad promo?

I know comedy is subjective and personally, I don't find Matthew Perry funny. Plus the timeslot is a killer, putting a brand new sitcom up against two, already established sitcoms is not a good idea. NBC would've been much better off airing this show now in the summer when the other networks have nothing but reruns going up against Go on.

Who does Matthew Perry have pictures of or know secrets about that he keeps getting these gigs?

Well, judging from the thread, I may be one of the few who does like Matthew Perry, but I'm not sure about this show. I mean, the subject matter itself is not exactly conducive to a laugh riot a minute, you know? I get shows now have to think outside the box to even have a chance now, but a death support group is just...depressing.

I'm willing to give this a shot because of my aforementioned liking of Matthew Perry, but I see this going no more than, say, five episodes, and that's me being generous. It also spells doom in that not only is it opposite New Girl, but Happy Endings, too.

I guess it's a good thing I read that MP plans on also still doing his recurrent lawyer gig on The Good Wife in addition to this show. That tells me he knows the odds are shitty and, hey, if he can do two shows at once - one being semi successful - more power to him in the long run.

I love MP and I can certainly relate to the subject matter (widowed at 32). This and Animal Practice with Tyler Labine are the only shows I am looking forward to in the new season. Since it is not up against 2 shows I love, I can record both it and Happy Endings and be a happy girl!

I'm very sorry for your loss, cmahorror. Since I do plan on at least watching the pilot, maybe I'll be proven wrong and won over!

And MP would likely get all of the credit if that happens.

I'm a huge MP fan, but I can just imagine if I wasn't. The guy DEFINITELY gets show deal after show deal after show deal. I recently watched Studio 60 and I was majorly impressed (up until the last several episodes). So that was actual quality material I wasn't aware of until now.

But seriously. If I wasn't a fan, I would SO be all, "Stop trying to make Matthew Perry happen! It ain't gonna happen!"

But Chandler Bing is easily one of my favourite top 10 TV characters of all time. And easily one of the , if not the, funniest.

NBC will use the Olympics as a springboard to sample their new shows before their official broadcast dates.

Go On is said to be August 8th/9th and, I guess, iTunes and Amazon will also have said sample, if the write up is correct.

So, cynically, if it does suck, we will know BEFORE its September 11th premiere date.

ETA: And still more about the show from today's TCA panel. I'll say this much for NBC: They are really pushing this show in terms of advertising/exposure.

Grantland isn't very charitable:

The apparent cream of this rather corny crop is Go On, a sitcom starring the always-game Matthew Perry, which will be getting a special preview next month in between pole vaulting and hurdles. Go On isn't a bad pilot, just a creaky one: it concerns an acerbic radio DJ (a job more overrepresented on television than "architect" or "sassy ethnic friend") who recovers from the death of his wife via a quirky support group. One could be charitable and say it's a remake of Dear John, or be honest and call it what it is: Community with kindly Bill Cobb in place of Chevy Chase and a wilted pile of Megan Fox jokes where the Dreamatorium should be. (Doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result isn't the definition of insanity. It's the definition of Hollywood.)

I've been thinking Go On looks like Community with most of the weirdness sanded off ever since I saw the trailer.

I did like MP when he was on The Good Wife but that wasn't a comedic role. I don't generally like him in comedies. That said, this show has Laura Benanti and Julie White so I've got to at least check out a few episodes for them. The problem is that it's on during two of my favorite shows so this is going to be a DVR type of situation for me.

I'm reluctant to say this but I kind of want to see this show. Although I hate the lead I love several of the cast members. Hopefully it'll be more of an ensemble show like Community.

Since the Olympics are the only thing on as of late, I've seen the ads for "Go On" about 100 times in the past week.

I'm on the fence about this show. Some days I think that I might give it a shot. I'm ok with MP, the rest of the cast looks promising...but I fear that it might be an old schtick after seeing "Anger Management" (or as I call it "Charlie Sheen Being Charlie Sheen Is Still Funnier Than Two And Half Men").

Worth asking - what the hell happened to Matthew Perry? He looks like 10 miles of bad road, bloaty and haggard. Is this booze and cigarettes? They should really not light him too well - he looks like hell in HD.

Well, between the booze, cigarettes, AND his past issues with prescription drugs (see Friends Season 3 for scary thin; Season 6 for the other end of the spectrum and the true meaning of bloated), I'm not surprised it caught up.

I like MP, and I rarely watched Friends. I think he's a good comedic actor. I watched a couple of eps of Mr. Sunshine, but stopped for some reason. I grew bored with Sunset Strip, or whatever it was called. But for some reason, I still like him. I see potential in Go On. I do watch New Girl, or actually I record it, so I hope I'm able to record both shows.

I was pleased to see that Tyler James Williams (Everybody Hates Chris) is in it. I'll definitely give this show a try.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I do like Matthew Perry, but I did watch Friends and loved MP's Chandler Bing.

But I'm just pointing out that his past issues have, for better or worse, affected him physically.

I also plan on checking this out. I'm going to try to remember the preview on 8/8 (at 11-something after the Olympics! Yikes!), but if not then, its real start date in September.

I would like for the show to succeed for MP's sake, but being up against not one, but TWO other popular established comedies (New Girl/Happy Endings), and I don't think this really has a shot. And it is on NBC, a far cry from its Friends TV dominant era.

If this does fail, I have read his role on The Good Wife as a villainous lawyer is recurring (and have heard raves for MP's ability to do drama), so maybe his character will turn up back there.

I'll watch this show (or at least an episode or 2 to give it a try), but I really like MP better in dramatic roles - I thought he was very good on The Good Wife and before that he had a small role on The West Wing which I liked him in as well.

I saw most of Mr. Sunshine because I happened across it OnDemand during a couple of nights of insomnia. It was so bad, just dumb, dumb, dumb. The premise was terrible and it just wasn't funny. I also don't ever remember seeing one commercial for it prior to or during its airing. If I hadn't found it by accident, I never would have heard of it.

I really like MP in his The Good Wife role. They have a fairly large cast of judges, lawyers and other legal types who pop in occasionally as part of different plots. His character has only appeared in two episodes, but he will certainly do more.

At the end of their Olympics coverage tonight, NBC aired a *very* extended preview for this show. A preview of the first four eps. I think it lasted 20-ish minutes? Based on that, I am torn on this show. These previews started off with so many cliches that I was uninterested in seeing more, but since I was too lazy to get the remote I kept it on. Still lots of cliches and predictableness, but not awful. I may watch, but I don't feel the need to watch he first 4 eps now, although I'm sure there is a lot more to be seen in them. Not sure this was a great move for NBC - giving so much away.

So, I watched the sneak peek pilot. And...I have no idea if I liked it or not.

I noticed MP's voice was just...odd. Except for when he was yelling at the football player who was texting.

As for the concept, it was...okay, I guess. I still have no idea how the hell such a concept is sustainable as a comedy series. The whole "group of eclectic weirdos" has been done to death on other shows, but they were somewhat amusing. I did like Owen (the guy that played Chris on Everybody Loves Chris) and Ryan's little back and forth. Just not sure that is enough to keep tuning in. As for the end, that was just...weird for weird's sake.

What was interesting, if problematic, is that I thought MP was actually extremely effective during the poignant/dramatic stuff more than the comedy here.

So, it is a good thing Huff Po reported today that
Spoiler

I really do not see this lasting. And I see no chemistry with Ryan/Lauren. I'm ASSUMING we are supposed to. The rest, too soon to tell. But, yeah, I have no idea if I'll tune in next month. But I sincerely wish MP and Company well with this.

This mainly got by on the charm of Matthew Perry. Flesh out the other characters, especially Tyler James Williams and tone down the therapist and you may have something.
Not a bad cameo by TO, either.
