Motorcity: Live Free. Drive Fast!

Imagine the City of Detroit over a century in the future; the original city itself has been buried beneath a new futuristic one ruled over by a dictatorial billionaire . Cars have been banned and personal freedoms curtailed; a small band of rebels live beneath the city in the refuge known as "Motorcity" to fight the power and free the enslaved populace.
Did I mention the tricked out vehicles?
Or the rollicking theme song?
And that it was made by Chris Prynoski and produced at Titmouse, Inc?
From what I’ve seen so far, it’s not a bad show; the animation is good (although some might think it’s too blocky) and it’s lightning fast. I had to rewatch the pilot a few times to pause and get a good look at the cars and the settings. The set up and characters are rather cliché but I still find the show intriguing.
This show currently airs on Disney XD on Monday nights at 9:00EST/6:00pmPST. The first two eps (“Battle For Motor City “& “Power Trip ”) are available for legal viewing here. A new episode is usually added after the newest one airs.
The pilot, “Battle for Motorcity” is also available for free on iTunes.

Finally got to see the first three eps and I'm really enjoying this show. It's not perfect by any means but it's far more interesting than Disney's other offering, TRON: Uprising IMO.
The visuals are amazing! Chris Prynoski stated in an interview he and a production designer went to Detroit to get a feel for the city's unique architecture as well as its urban decay. Both heavily influenced the underground world of Motorcity.

Cartoons routinely defy the laws of physics, but few do it so stylishly!
Despite the toxic mutations, The Terras' territory was done in beautiful detail! It might as awell have been another planet. Plus... giant mutant deer!
This is about the smartest depiction I've seen of the Texas character; he actually did figure out a more effective way for Kaia's group to carry out their plans and remembered that salt was the key to destroying the plants. Also nice to know that Mike does value at least some of his ideas, even if they're not always practical or the timing wasn't right.
When it was time to get down and dirty, I half expected Texas to freeze or become confused during the fight. In every ep up to now, he'd always talk about beating up the bad guys, practicing his fighting skills (Muy Tai no less!) and come up with grand fantasies of how he and The Burners would end up on top. Nice to know he actually can walk the walk! I loved how he and Mike together took down the Terras.
I loved the fantasy sequence during the teaser with Texas saving everyone ("We can't punch... good!") and his taking out Imaginary!Kane.
Ditto how hilarious it was to see Texas "go native".
Texas and his gun-chucks!
I also enjoyed the action sequence as Mike was climbing mushrooms barely dodging the traps the Terras set for him.
The remark about Chuck screaming like a woman!
Kaia's third eye was creepy, but the Terras' mouths and sharp teeth were a bit underwhelming for me. I do give props to the production folk for giving the Terras' voices that muffled speaker sound when they were wearing the gas masks.
I'm curious if this is a one off for the Terras or if we will be seeing them again. The Burners would have a heck of a time having to fight a war on two fronts.
That said, I did have a little touble with the episode's premise:
This show is set at least a century in the future and yet there is still "toxic waste"?
I can believe Kane dumping more conventional garbage into Motorcity and the surrounding area but as stated above, one would think a better technique for dealing with garbage would have been discovered by now.
Why didn't the Terras leave once their homeland became polluted? It couldn't have taken too long to see the negative effects of the toxic poison on themselves and the environment.
I'm curious as to why The Burners hadn't seen Kaia and her group before; although we don't know how long Mike et al have been in MC or how far they'd traveled beyond their HQ.
Another thing I liked was the room the gang was in after Texas' fantasy sequence; it turned out to be a greenhouse where Jacob grows the gang's food. Nice bit of continuity since they have to get a consistent food source from somewhere. Even Julie can't be expected to constantly bring stuff down from DD.

Dee Snider will be voicing the title character.
A clip from the ep and an interview with Snider is here.
The Duke of Detroit will frequently butt heads with Mike, who leads The Burners. "Voicing the character 'The Duke of Detroit' for Motorcity is one of the most fun things I've done in a long time," Snider says. "The Duke is an amalgam of Kid Rock, James Brown, David Lee Roth and me, circa 1985. The director is always shocked how well I play my role, but to tell a secret, I'm not acting."
This is going to be interesting!

Big place under there with lots of levels etc.
This show is set at least a century in the future and yet there is still "toxic waste"?
Why not? Depends upon what the waste is and if Kane CO feels like trying to not produce it or eliminate it. A good portion of waste today can be easily gotten rid of yet companies refuse to do since it would cost money to change how things are done. So instead it goes out to the landfills.
Kane also doesn't care about the people of Motorcity so dumping waste cheaply there instead of spending resources to either destroy it once produced or figure out ways to not produce it isn't on the schedule.
Why didn't the Terras leave once their homeland became polluted? It couldn't have taken too long to see the negative effects of the toxic poison on themselves and the environment.
She said it takes awhile for it to take effect. She stated that when the burners were freaking out when she mentioned the toxic atmosphere in the place. The plant life was likely affected quicker and the terras were overjoyed since well it looked beneficial. Later on they got the changes so by then it was too late.
I'm curious if this is a one off for the Terras or if we will be seeing them again.
Mike said the Terras would be back and the Terras are in the intro credits so likely they will be shown.

Dee Snider did a great job voicing Duke of Detroit! He's quite a character.
Gotta love his sweet ride! It shoots LIMOS for missiles!!
Also enjoyed seeing other car gangs as well, although I'm disappointed that most of the other MC residents are apparently criminals and neer do wells (and mutant maniacs like The Terras). While it's to be expected since they'd have more power and freedom in MC compared to Deluxe, it would be nice to see other rebels who are more akin to the Burners, people who want to be free but aren't out to exploit the innocent.
A pizza joint in MC? Who knew?
It's also good that compensation was shown to be a sort of barter system for goods & services since conventional money probably wouldn't matter [away from Deluxe].
No more about Julie being Kane's daughter? What does Kane think Julie is doing and where she is while she is in Old Detroit?
I'm sure that tidbit will be revealed soon, and I'm curious as to how things will go down when it does. As for Kane, one could theorize he's too busy ruling over Deluxe and planning to destroy The Burners to notice what Julie's been up to. It's possible she checks in when she has to and then goes off.
Another thing I really liked about this episode was Mike finally realizing that actions have consequences and that he and The Burners should be careful when up against their enemies. From the beginning Mike's been very cavalier about the lives of others (that of Chuck in particular) and when he thought Dutch was killed, it truly scared him! Unfortunately he was so scared he'd lose another Burner, that he tried to protect them too much and ultimately hurt their opportunities to fight back.
I'm looking forward to next week's ep when we get to see more of Mike's past and what lead him to leave Deluxe for MC.
According to Prynoski, there will be eps focusing on how and why all The Burners chose to live in MC.

It seems the network is airing the eps out of order because there seems to be a focus on The Duke of Detroit's appearances during a short time frame. Personally I would have run the show in its intended order since I doubt viewers would suddenly forget The Duke if a few eps aired without him.
"Vendetta": We finally get a glimpse of Mike's pre-Burner life in Deluxe. Apparently Kane has his version of the Hitler Youth with Mike and other young men living and operating like soldiers. Mike was shown to have been a protege of Kane's (no suprise there) and he was prompted to leave for MC once his illusions of Kane were shattered. Meanwhile he's being plagued by a mysterious figure who claims Mike ruined his life and is intent on vengeance.
I wish this ep had been a two parter since I would have liked to have seen more of Deluxe and Mike's role in it. Plus, I think the show should have gone a slightly darker route and have had Mike unintentionally begin demolition before learning there were people inside. That way, it would have made more sense for the mystery vengeance seeker to have a reason for his life being ruined. The ep already showed Mike was able to rescue the tenants before the building came down, so what motive would the vengeance seeker have unless..... it's Mike's fellow cadet (a blond fellow who was unnamed in the episode) who was with the demo crew that fateful day. I can see his life ruined by Mike's actions such as being blamed for Mike's rebellion and for Mike's escape.
I also like how Texas and Mike interacted in this ep. Texas is a bit of a "cloudkookoolander", but his pep talk to Mike (after learning that Mike nearly killed innocent peole for Kane) explaining that Kane fooled a lot of people and Mike couldn't change the past without a time machine really hit home.
There was also the subplot of the metal eating nanobots that posed a threat to the city - and proving Roth the Robot was a big ol' chicken!
We learn Roth is one of Kane's old attack robots but rebuilt and colorfully decorated by Dutch. He generally acts like Dutch's assistant. According to this ep, he's shown to be afraid of the nanobots, but according to Dutch, Roth is made up primarily of polymers, not metal, therefore he shouldn't be worried about the nanobots eating him. This figures in the upcoming ep, "Going Dutch".
"Blonde Thunder": The big secret is out... Chuck can't drive! I'm not surprised at this revelation since Chuck's fearful nature has been a big part of his character and it makes sense that he'd have preferred to be Mike's co-pilot rather than drive a car of his own. Of course Mike's big mouth gets the gang in trouble with The Duke (in his second appearance), when they go looking for car parts. Mike challenges Duke to a car race for pinks in Chuck's stead (putting up Mutt), not knowing his best bud can't drive and will likely lose due to the fact the Duke is as good as driver as the Burners.
As usual, Mike puts Chuck's butt on the line and in over his head. Mike does his best to teach Chuck to drive and it allowed for some funny scenes:
Mike: Can you stop screaming??
Chuck: It's my PROCESS!
The Duke naturally can't be expected to make this easy so he recruits the other teams we met in "The Duke of Detroit" to race for him in two of three races. This makes me wonder if these teams work for Duke or not since this is the second time they came on command. Unless he promised them something for their trouble if they win.
Obviously, Chuck prevails, and Mike promises to keep his lack of driving abilities a secret from the rest of the Burners.
"Going Dutch": The inevitible zombie episode. This time via nanites (courtesy of Kane) which reprogram the brain and make victims .. well, mindless violent zombies.
We also get a glimpse at Dutch's pre Burner life which I liked, although it was done in drawings rather than conventional flashbacks (Dutch is not only a mechanic, but also an artist). We learn Kane didn't approve of his artistic talents (perhaps drawing on too many Deluxe walls?) and Dutch leaves his family (parents and younger brother) for MC. Apparently he's the last to join the Burners, as the flashbacks show him meeting Mike, Chuck, Julie and Texas shortly after his arrival.
I'm curious how Dutch happened to also be a mechanic, unless we find out his parents were also mechanics or once owned a garage before Kane banned conventional vehicles.
Dutch finding out how to stop the nanites by using a magnet was genius (150 years in the future and magnets STILL mess up computers!) but here's the rub: In "Vendetta" we learn Roth is made of polymers not metal, yet while Dutch is taking some time off, Roth gets drawn immediately by a giant magnet (the kind you'd see at a junkyard to lift cars). If he's made of a non metal polymer, then Roth shouldn't be sucked up by a giant magnet right?
We also find that another one of Texas' wacky ideas actually saved the day! Dutch took the inspiration to use the magnet to deactivate the nanites . The big suprise was seeing how the nanits affected Roth as well! It wasn't so much a virus as it was rewriting brainwaves in both humans and AI's like Roth.
In other news, Tooley is too dumb to live! Ignorance truly is bliss for him.
Another thought that crossed my mind after episode's end was how Dutch could cure everyone but noone apparently got re-infected. Once would think the nanites not destroyed by the magnet would have re-entered some people.
Mike is coming off like a Marty Stu at times. When Dutch is escaping from the zombies, Mike is the only other Burner not affected. Why? He conveniently stole one of KaneCo's protective suits from an unknown Deluxe soldier! He ended up getting zombified later when the suit was eventually compromised, but it still got to me.
Overall, I like what's coming so far and I can't wait to see the other Burners' stories of what lead them to MC. The show's creators have promised a story arc so I'm hoping we'll get there soon. I suspect one arc will be the mysterious vengeance seeker from "Vendetta", and another will be Julie eventually being exposed as Kane's daughter and the resulting fallout.

(Seriously, where is everybody?)
"Ride of The Fantasy Vans":
I enjoyed this ep, if anything because we get a bit more backstory on Jacob & Kane's partnership, and that the Burners do have some fun during their off hours. The spiritual descendents of D&D players (mixed with Renaissance fair participants) make for an amusing storyline.
Chuck has been the king for 48 straight weeks? That's 11 months of no one having any clue what he does on weekends! How is that possible? I admit I thought the gang were doing Burner related stuff practically 24/7 and the gang would have a clue when one of their own disappears for a while without telling anyone what they're doing.
LOVED that arm cannon (the glorified sligshot) of Chuck's! That's the first time we've seen it since "Texas-ify It" and the first time we've seen how it gets activated. I have a theory that the reason the gang can bring up computer sceens anywhere and the fact Chuck actived his slingshot is due to a computer chip or some such thing is implanted in them. How else to explain Chuck merely squeezing his wrist to activate the weapon?
Loved how Texas fell in love with his "25th level" ax! He even had it seatbelted in during the chase!
Loved hearing Brian Posehn as a LARPer ("Octus" on "Symbiotic Titan")! The other LARPers were also giggle worthy. The ones called "Sam" & "Phillip"... there had to be a shoutout reference to their names wasn't there? Or is the gag that they're the only LARPers who went by plain names?
Young Kane was creepy looking and he shares some physical traits with Mark Hammill's Joker (not entirely suprised since Hammill voices Kane). It would seem the giant utiliton he created was a prototype of the H.O.U.N.D.S. he would ultimately create. It also seems that even in the past (which had to be at least 25-35 years earlier) Kane was interested in gaining control of the populace and having "traitors" brought to him. I'm curious if we'll get more background on Detroit itself during this time and how things ended up this way.

One minor complaint is that the show feels very episodic. I was hoping for more of an arching storyline with a clear goal in mind by seasons end. The "Monster of the Week" format--Bad Guy sends robot menace downtown, Heroes defeat it, Rinse, Repeat--is staring to seem tired to me, especially because they keep seeming to give us hints of all this backstory and build-up of a final showdown, and all with no clear goal in mind. Actually now that I think about it, it reminds me a lot of Samurai Jack. Not that that's a bad thing at all, my point simply is, how in the heck are they gonna end this show?

One minor complaint is that the show feels very episodic. I was hoping for more of an arching storyline with a clear goal in mind by seasons end.
I have read in interviews that there is a story arc here and there already have been some threads that have yet to be tied off such as the mysterious Red from "Vendetta", Kaia ans her mutant crew, and Julie's family ties to Kane. It seems the eps are also being run out of order so that more attention is placed on the Duke's appearances. There will be 20 eps in this season so we have plenty of room, but I don't know if the show will get a second season.
how in the heck are they gonna end this show?
I'm curious too. Mike seems to be all about taking down Kane but no mention has been made as to how to do that. We know he's averse to killing him, and that means having to hold him indefinitely. Plus there could be loyal factions who'd want to keep him in power. Something tells me Mike just hasn't thought everything out.

"Off The Rack":
I'm a bit disappointed with this ep; It definitely should have aired earlier in the season as it had that "early season" feel. It made little sense for the Burners to question Julie after all her time with them; they know she leads a double life so even they must understand that she can't always pick up and go at anytime she wants (such as the awards ceremony during the teaser). It didn't ring true to me.
I also had an issue with the storyline; the safety suit should have immediately identified Julie from the start. This is 150 years in the future! Considering the DNA technology we have now, and given the tight rein Kane has over Deluxe and its residents, it would make sense he'd have everyone's DNA print on file. He should have been able to identify the Burner who was wearing it. Come to think of it, why didn't he question how a Burner came to acquire a suit in the first place?
Not to mention the method to deactivate the suit was silly! To overload its systems by making it really dangerous? Ridiculous! By that theory, those people who were made into missiles to stop the Burners should have automatically had "deactivated" suits. Julie's earlier foray into the defense systems complex should have done the deed as well.
To see all those Deluxe residents being used as projectiles was awesome! It definitely proves that Kane isn't above using innocents in the craziest of ways to get back at the Burners!
Conveniently, Julie was prevented from telling Mike the truth about herself and Kane's relationship; but at least we have confirmation that Claire knows not only about her double life (from "Ride The Lightning") but also her secret that Kane is her dad. No one else in Deluxe seems to know this.
At least Claire has been very consistent! A girly-girl who abhors MC's grittiness and even questions Julie why she would even go there when Deluxe has all their needs. Love that "Oooh... Shiny!" moment when Chuck & Texas left her in the building after saving her!
Tooley making everyone dance was funny! Its exactly what you'd expect from him.
Best line:
Mike: "I'm running out of snot for [Julie] to beat out of me! "

Motorcity will be back with new episodes October 19th 8:30pm EST!
The episodes in question are:
Fearless and Mayhem Night, which airs October 26th.
I've seen Fearless (which had been available legally before it was yanked) and it was meant to air much sooner. It's a good ep, but I think a bit more could have been done with it in regards to Chuck's storyline.
"Mayhem Night" sounds like it's a take off of the Detroit tradition, "Devil's Night" which occurs the night before Halloween. I'm definitely curious.

Unfortunately the sucky time slot is likely due to the fact that the show won't be back for another season.
I just hope this season finale will be good enough and not end on a nebulous cliffhanger.
