My memory is that Susan St. James was pregnant and insisted that the producers include the pregnancy, because despite the way producers in general try to hide pregnancies, pregnancy is beautiful and deserves to be acknowledged. So the producers minimized what they could but included the pregnancy (and, presumably, the kid; I watched sporadically, saw a scene with a pregnant St. James, but nothing after).

The baby was "put in a drawer" at first they talked about it a bit but it had disappeared by the time SStJ left the show.
