Another city joins the Housewives fold

Following in the diamond-encrusted footsteps of Orange County, New York City, Atlanta, New Jersey, Beverly Hills and Miami, Vancouver will be getting its own version of the popular American show, Shaw Media announced Tuesday.

Debuting April 4 at 9 p.m. on Slice, the series will follow the lives of five of Vancouver’s most prominent women: free-spirited jet-setter Christina Kiesel, self-made businesswoman and fashionista Jody Claman, former pageant queen Mary Zilba, adrenaline junkie Reiko MacKenzie and winery owner and “luxury toy aficionado” Ronnie Seterdahl Negus. Source

I've seen some of the US-based Housewives shows on Slice while travelling in Canada so I'll be curious to see if Vancouver will ever be run on Bravo in the US like they rerun Apprentice and other non-Bravo shows.

Hmm...I've been to Vancouver many times, but this doesn't seem very interesting. I'll probably check out the first couple of episodes (if I can find them).

A brief clip of the ladies
The ladies on Vancouver

Alize? Ok, Reiko. She looks like Dominique from ANTM.
I can't tell if the "29" year old is a jokester or if she's really that deluded but I pre-like her for the potential entertainment factor alone. I'm getting Cat from DC vibes from her.

I love Vancouver and I live on Vancouver island so it makes me sad/embarrassed about how bad this looks. I keep seeing promos for it and the promos just seem so low budget and Ott fake. I'm still gonna check it out just to see Vancouver mainly but I doubt this installment of rh will last.

If she's '29' then I am 25, when in reality I am 38. Girl worked hard for her settlements! Looks like she spent a great deal of it on surgical enhancements.

Reiko named her daughter after a skanky liquor. I have met people who have named their dogs Alize (usually a pitbull or rotweiller) but they also believe that pyjama pants are totally acceptable attire to spend your entire day in and a career is something completely foreign to them.

I used to live in Vancouver and had the great fortune to never meet women like this. The amount of sad sack botox on this series really puts the women of BH and OC to 'shame'.

I'm seriously ashamed to appear on the same network as these women.

That said, can't wait to watch and make fun!

OMG, I am embarassed to live in Vancouver. Sadly, Vancouver is full of douchey types like this. Horrible, vapid people who deserve a good bitch-slapping on a daily basis. I hope this show gets cancelled very quickly. These people, and these TV shows, are just a sad indication of where the world is going. Pathetic and revolting.

Should have added an obnoxious "tai tai" or two, but I guess Hong Kong Canadian women/ladies who lunch types are too classy to be on a reality show like that.

This could be fun. 2 of the blondes look like they belong on that trashy Dallas show. The 29 yr old with the saggy implants --- "It should be legal to marry your first cousin here" and "8 marriages? I think I can do 9" and "I support myself on 2 divorces" --- can't wait to see husband # 3. Eeek.

The Housewives on Wealth
The Promo Shoot

In the promo shoot footage, Reiko looks like Lynda from RHoDC but is probably 20 years younger. Since the cast was revealed her name has been in the news due to her husband's past

Sun News Lal was considered a suspect in the 1994 murders of Jim and Ron Dosanjh, victims of a turf war between rival factions of a drug gang.

He was later acquitted in a trial along with colourful crime boss Bindy Johal, Peter Gill and three others.

The murder trial gained notoriety when it was later revealed that outside of the court, juror Gillian Guess had an affair with Gill, who was out on bail at the time. Guess was later convicted of obstruction of justice.

Sun News Lal was charged for possessing a restricted weapon in 1994 — a .25-calibre semi-automatic handgun — and lost his appeal of his conviction in 1998.

In July 1998, his half-brother, Vinuse News MacKenzie, 27, was killed with a gunshot to the head after five men broke into the Vancouver home owned by the parents of Vinuse and Sun News Lal.

At the time, Vancouver police suspected the break-in was a so-called “drug rip” —a theft of illegal drugs — organized by the Big Circle Boys.

Both of MacKenzie’s parents were also wounded in the attack — his mother in the leg, his father in the chest — but survived.

So yeah, while Canada's dirty laundry might not be aired out to the extent that U.S. is there's clearly enough trashtastic behavior to go around.

Love Christina's opening credit line about Vancouver being a landmine, which doesn't surprise me about her - the HWs on Golddiggers. I knew from the scene of Jody sipping tea from her balcony with pinky finger extended and some of her voice affectations that I don't care much for her already. She reminds me a bit of Ramona with the business savvy, the Type A personality and the nasty streak (although I inexplicably enjoy Ramona).

From the preview, I look forward to watching it, but I'm still a little confused by it. There doesn't seem to be much drama, but there is some trashiness there. I think it'll be about what I enjoy from this series. Lots of beautiful, over the top homes and fashions, some snarkiness, hopefully some funny and interesting gals and a little bit of drama. This'll be a nice alternative to something like the upcoming New Jersey trainwreck.

One thing I hope is that Bravo airs it at some point. I feel like they'll wait and see how it goes and maybe air it in reruns, as a marathon, but I'd like to see it get proper attention. Vancouver isn't far away and could fit nicely if executed correctly.

Sweet Fancy Moses, what a trainwreck.

I don't even know where to start...the horrible plastic surgery, extremely questionable fashion choices, asshole snobbery, extremely childish grown women behaving like trash...so much that I am overwhelmed.

Jody really needs to be slapped, hard. For many, many reasons not least of all her clothing. She doesn't appear to be a large woman and she swathes herself in satin comforters with tutus and the most heinous jewelry and tiaras. What the fuck is going on with her when she gets dressed? Her daughter is equally vapid and with the same disgusting, cheap looking fusion extensions. A woman over 40 has no need to have hair almost to their waist curled in ringlets. It's trashy. She fancies herself to be the Queen Bee of the group and any woman who stands up to her bullying is shot down and on the outs with the other women. I have no time in my life for women like that, Jody is fully accomplished in her professional achievements but when it comes to who she is and how she feels about herself and her appearance she surrounds herself in over the top clothing that distracts from what is really going on under the clothing, drives a hummer and carries Berkins. All so that no one actually gets to know who she really is and rejects her because she is basically a piece of shit. She is my ex in female form.

Ronnie has an amazing body but she's got a face like a welder's bench. Butterface, truly. And she's an asshole to boot.

Reiko, I didn't want to like her but I do so far. She loves her cars and if I ever came into that kind of money I am not ashamed to admit my boyfriend and I have discussed what vehicles we would buy and the necessity of having a very, very large garage attached to our dream home. She doesn't seem to play into the covert catty bullshit some of the other women are dishing out and I respect that. She said she's got a temper, probably the Scottish in her. I'm a feisty Scot and grew up a bit of a tomboy because I couldn't be bothered with the crazy girl politics and games.

Mary, she seems like a really nice woman who is fresh in the dating scene. That means you date to figure out what works and doesn't as a woman of a certain age who is divorced. Jody picking on her for her prior boyfriend was just a play at being a bitch and a bit of a famewhore move to get camera time. Mary also gets equal camera time, so she should probably rethink attacking others if she wants to be on top. I hope Mary has it out with her.

Christina, I did NOT want to like her at all! Her absolutely unapologetic attitude about being a gold digger, not wanting a career and to just enjoy her lifestyle and all the perks that entails was entertaining. She does not pretend to be anything she isn't and I like women like that. It is not the way I'd play, but to each their own.

The clothing choices pretty much suck so far with Jody taking the crown of all HoWives franchises for worst all round character out of the gates...beating Taylor Armstrong because Taylor at least left the comforters and duvets at home.

I don't watch any of these Real Housewives shows, but as a Vancouverite, I was interested in seeing these rich folks going to place I can't afford. So, I was a bit shocked they ate at chain restaurants like Earl's and Cactus Club Cafe. I mean, I go there!

I am looking forward to seeing more mansions in West Vancouver.

I did not know that there are actual condos in Vancouver with a private elevator. I thought that was an east coast thing.

I have to say, I like Christina and her gay best friend best. I find their relationship genuine. I actually buy they like and even love each other. Am I stupid? Oh well.

I'll bet they ate at Earl's and the Cactus Club because any of the really upscale restaurants wouldn't give permission to film. This is a really skanky crowd. Christina has the saggiest boobs ever, and her gay friend is trying WAY too hard. Jody is bitch and a loudmouth and has no taste whasoever. She also thinks she keeps it real by barking out her comments to other people, but she's just obnoxious.

I wonder when Reiko's husband's drug lord past/trial for murder information will come out? Yes, I know he was acquitted, but still.

The women on the show seem to be trying to hard to be entertaining but their behavior is obnoxious. I have never seen a group of Canadian women behaving like that before.

I am shocked that the show didn't cast anyone to reflect the demographic diversity of Vancouver.

Why not have a cast member from Hong Kong or India, i.e. Asian & South East Asian Canadian.?

I thought it was weird that no one knew if she would show up at the her own birthday party.

Her male friend is very loud & he is trying to hard to be entertaining. I don't know anyone who would brag about a $2,200 bar bill.

Jody and her fashion choices. The fact she is in the business and wants to tell others what to wear is funny. She is wearing this huge fur hat indoors on what seems like a summer day. Then the duvet wrapped around herself. Add to that the tiara. I notice she was wearing spanx when she fell on the bed with that man at the party. Her legs went up enough to confirm the spanx. She definitely wants to be the Queen Bee of the group. She does this by telling everyone what she thinks whether they want to hear or not. Then she complains they can't face the truth when they get upset. Of course it is only her version of the truth.

Ronnie irritated me. I loved her house. But didn't like her plastic face or attitude. Why does Mary think Ronnie is her friend?

Reiko might be alright but she seems the closest friend of Jody so that makes me doubt her. And she does have a huge forehead.

Christina is who she is. At least she admits it. And I don't think I would show up for my party either if Jody was going to be there.

Reiko is part Asian. I don't know about wealthy South Asian women in Vancouver, but Chinese/Hong Kong women probably won't participate because of at least one of the following:

1. Jetsetters who fly back and forth (aka "astronauts") too often
2. Don't feel comfortable speaking English all the time (from what I understand, the wealthiest families of Chinese descent who live in Vancouver are, for the most part, first generation/immigrant generation)
3. Subscribe to a modern version of "a lady's name/picture is in the paper three times: when she is born, when she marries and when she dies" school of thought - i.e. "a lady does not get involved with trashy reality TV"

Personally, I think the third point is the most likely.

I thought Ronnie and Mary looked almost like twins. I had a difficult time telling them apart. I would've enjoyed them and their relationship more if they were sisters. Reiko was a breath of fresh air and I loved her cars, body and snark. Jody is annoying and reminds me of Jill Zarin. She's a phony and a total bitch. I do LOVE her home though. Would be my top choice if I could live in ANY housewife house. Christina was delightful and so pleasant. I didn't enjoy seeing Jody give her a hard time. It was so one-sided and even if Jody did think it was inappropriate for her to have a relaitonship with an older man, in her own words she kept saying Christina was a child. How can you blame that on a child then? Geez.

I found this show to be a combination of NYC and DC. It's lighter and more pleasant than these series are these days. I already prefer it over OC and what's become of ATL and what is happening with BH. I want to experience their lives and have some drama, hell even MAJOR drama here and there, but overall the franchise is getting too dark and toxic. This was a nice reprieve from that.

Considering how lackluster OC and ATL have been I think Bravo should've scooped this series up. It's very well produced, well cast and seems interesting enough to fit. Plus the money is there in spades it seems. If they're smart they need to get the US broadcast rights and treat it like their originals.

Now I just need somebody to do The Real Housewives of London!

I believe that I'm going to like this show. Mary looks a lot like Priscilla Presley back in the "Naked Gun" days. Christina, who happens to be a Leo, reminds me of my Leo friend. We always say that "there's regular time and then there's 'Leo time'" because she shows up late (if she shows up at all) and can't understand why anyone would find that to be an offensive quality. Jody reminds me of Vicki from OC, only because I hate her guts. I'm on the fence with Ronnie, and I actually like Reiko so far.

The peripheral characters seem like a lot of fun. Marika and Kevin could be the best part of this show if they're going to be featured regularly, like Brandi and Dana on BH.

By thundering jesus george.

Watching Mary's intro felt vaguely like the intro to a soft-porn about banging your friends hot man, what with all the incredibly awkward cougary flirtation with her son's friend.

"Looking good!"
"Not as good as you"
"Stir Fry?"
"My speciality"
...
"And here I thought that was sausage."

I was also really impressed with Jody at Sunrise Markets. Firstly because it was right around the corner from my work in the DTES. Not a high traffic area of the city for those with money. Nice to see she doesn't think she's above slumming it. Sunrise is also wayyy cheap - I would have pegged her for a Whole Foods kind of woman.

Looks like the show is a big hit in Canada. It's 2-hour premiere was the highest rated for Slice with 1.2 Million viewers. The shocking thing there is that there are episodes of Beverly Hills, DC and the entire season of Miami with similar ratings. The difference is that Canada is much smaller. The show was also trending worldwide. Bravo must be very pleased right now and I'm sure this will push forward more international versions. Also helps make a case that the show should be aired on Bravo.

As it's a RH franchise show, does anyone know if it will be broadcast on Bravo or on any network in the US?

I'd bet not. Even if its not necessarily the truth, a lot of American network execs like to pretend watching TV made for other markets "scares" Americans.

Sometimes it surprises me that the big exception to this rule, BBC America, exists at all.

They also possibly see it as a dilution of the brand (even though thats patently ridiculous with all the existing RH shows).

Sweet Fancy Moses, what a trainwreck.

And that's different from any other RH show how?

I don't even know where to start...the horrible plastic surgery, extremely questionable fashion choices, asshole snobbery, extremely childish grown women behaving like trash...so much that I am overwhelmed.

Heh. Believe it or not, an overwhelming majority of housewives in NJ or NY or even in OC don't act like they do on those RH shows either! This show is a now a worldwide standard bearer for fake drama and unfairly maligning entire communities!

There must be a typo in that press release. If the show drew 1.2 million viewers, how could it only draw 109,000 in the age bracket 25-54? I would assume the majority of the audience would be 25-54.
