"Apartment 23," formerly known as "Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23," shows how fresh-faced heartland girl June (Dreama Walker, "Gossip Girl") gets taken for a ride when she moves to Manhattan. She toughens up with the "help" of her scamming roommate, Chloe (Krysten Ritter), and James Van Der Beek (playing himself, or a snarky version thereof)

Questions:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the premise, but are we supposed to assume that Chloe habitually torments roommates in order to get them to leave? That's what it sounded like when she was talking to the Beek. So then why keep letting people move in? Why not just live by yourself? I assume she can afford it, since she's frequently out a roommate. Maybe her parents are paying her share of the apartment and insist on having a roommate to pick up the financial slack? But wouldn't they wonder why so many roommates come and go and then put two and two together?

I guess Chloe could be doing it just for kicks.

Yeah I guess so, but I think the premise works for a comedy. The trailer looks promising. I prefer the orginal title, though.

I’ve merged the existing two threads for Apartment 23 and renamed them, since ABC went back to the original name (sort of). The premiere is set for April 11.

I loved the promo I saw during the Super Bowl with Bryan Cranston as Walter White talking about what a terrible roommate she was.

I actually quite liked that. However, if Happy Endings is having problems holding the Modern Family audience, this show will sink like a stone - WAY too raunchy. A good raunchy (unlike 2 Broke Girls, which is kind of reminds me of), but too raunchy for ABC's family sitcom night.

ABC really needs to build a night around this, Happy Endings (my favorite current series) and Cougar Town (which I don't watch). They all seem like they would share an audience.

I love Happy Endings, but this show just wasn't funny enough. I might give it another try or two, because I like the idea of what they are trying to do, and there were a couple funny moments here and there (plus I love Krysten Ritter). But it will definitely need to improve comedically to keep me as a viewer.

A couple aesthetic notes:

--That bar at the end was gorgeous. Real place, anyone know?

--I tend to find Ritter super hot and love her style, but she is apparently one of those people who is much more attractive with her clothes on. That nude scene, even blurred, was not a good look for her at all.

2 Broke Girls isn't a good raunchy so much as hamfisted raunchy like anything with the fingerprints of Chelsea Handler and her buddy Whitney Cummings. They all but scream "Hey, I'm talking dirty" at you. And if you don't think Happy Endings is dirty, you're missing quite a few of the jokes, because it's as dirty as it gets. The Sean Penn joke alone....

That said, I watched it on Hulu yesterday and for a pilot episode it wasn't bad. I'm definitely going to give it a chance.

The Pilot wasn't as strong as I was hoping, but I like the concept enough to give it a few more tries. I was already a fan of Krysten Ritter and Dreama Walker was a pleasant surprise. James Van Der Beek still can't act, but I have a growing fondness for him after years of loyal Dawson-hate. I think my favorite moment was when they aired the

I agree this show would probably vibe better with Happy Endings then tagging it at the end of ABC's family comedy night.

I'm not crazy over the blonde actress, but the dark haired one is killing it. I wonder where the show can go from here though, if the premise was killed by the end of the pilot already (with the bitch becoming "human" already). Looks like this show is aiming to become the next Friends/HIMYM /bunch of singles in NY cult hit, but I'm not sure it'll succeed. And the show didn't really have any dirty jokes, but it was almost soft-pornish with the visuals - i have never seen a mainstream-network family hour have this much sex and nudity, esp in the pilot! It was off-putting. Once the pilot actually airs, there'll probably be some backlash.

Also - ten bucks if June and Mark hook up by mid season. Twenty if she ends up with VanDerBeek by the season finale. We can just write these scripts ourselves...

I don't watch 2 Broke Girls - caught the first two episodes and gave up. Not funny, too dirty, but dirty in a way that made me feel like I needed a shower afterwards.

HE does have quite a few raunchy jokes, but they're almost never overt. Take the last episode where Jane says "I'm going to go buzz one out" or her three-holed punch. Dirty yes, but only if you get it. That's the kind of dirt I like - clever dirt (completely the opposite of 2BG, which beats you over the head with penis jokes). TBIA23 leans much further towards 2BG than HE in that regard (like with the conversation about masturbation in the bathroom). Like I said, if HE can't hold onto MF's audience, this show sure as hell won't.

Just watched the pilot on Hulu. It's far from perfect and fell flat a few times, but it has potential.

To be fair, 9:30 (eastern time) is not network family hour. 8:00 to 9:00 is but that doesn't exist anymore anyways. How I Met Your Mother can be be plenty raunchy and that comes on right at 8:00. The family hour is dead.

I do agree with it having a problem since it's paired with Modern Family. I don't see much audience retention between the two.

I watched it on Hulu for Ritter and Van der Beek. I thought it was okay, but I don't see where they can go with this premise. I remember Ritter from VMars and der Beek looked more like Sean Bateman than Dawson to me. I thought the cheating boyfriend was pretty good.

I thought this was pretty good for a pilot. I'm not quite sure if there's a series in there, but I love me some Krysten Ritter, James Van Der Beek was good in it and I giggled quite a few times. I had no idea Liz Lapira was on this show, I think her line delivery was genius. Her quirky neighbor is poised to become a scene stealer, at least for me. I don't like the blonde girl though. I thought she was really shrill and annoying. You just want for Krysten Ritter to slap her and I didn't really get why she cared enough to tell her new roomie that her boyfriend was cheating on her. Van der Beek is looking good with that short hair-cut and the facial hair. Anyhow, with a premiere this late, does anyone think this has chances to return? Besides, I don't really know what ABC would want to do with this show. They're clearly going to put a new show after Modern Family in the fall and it's not like they have any other decent sitcom timeslots for this and Happy Endings, I think anywhere else on the schedule these two shows will probably tank just as much as Cougartown currently.

That's what I was thinking DimeStormRing. If Happy Endings was the kind of show that could launch another then ABC should open up a new comedy block with it and B-23 or Suburgatory cause the other two ABC comedies aren't in the same arena style wise.

Networks have been premiering shows as mid-season replacements in April for years...Parks & Recreation stared this way, same with Happy Endings.

I think it could return, ABC is really hyping it up. I think they really need to start another night of comedy with this, Happy Endings, and Cougar Town if they're willing to give it another chance. It'd be a risk but it could do decently. Happy Endings is getting a 1.8 - 2.0 on its own on a night surrounded by repeats - so perhaps if it was in a slot where people knew it was on it could be getting above a 2.0, which is enough to launch a night. Or they could slot them after Dancing With the Stars or a popular drama like Revenge or something...

As someone who speaks Vietnamese, the ending of the pilot was highly entertaining and stupid. The show so far for me is highly amusing, better than Cougar Town, but so far weaker than Happy Endings' premiere. But I think this show is PERFECT to pair up with Happy Endings, young cast, gear towards young people.

Wow, they should have broadcast this one first. Jimmy Olson was great, and I guess Dean Cain is supposed to be in a couple of episodes too.
