I just got to this in our watch/rewatch of season 6 (we watched a few episodes when they aired, but not many, and are now making our way through the DVD set). This is very possibly my least favorite episode of NuWho ever. Aside from the plotholes, which are legion, the biggest issue to me is how impotent the Doctor seems. He holds back Rory from the Siren, but only makes a sort of vague grab at the other poor fellows who are walking toward her. He seems to wait forever to make a grab for the shiny crown. He doesn't even try to dive in and save Rory, just sets a possibly murderous monster loose on him instead (with very little explanation as to why he thinks it'll work). He doesn't try to help Amy with the CPR, even though he is a doctor of everything and presumably knows a thing or two about the subject. He just sits there and gnaws on his thumbnail, and doesn't even try to save the day once Amy gives up (good thing Rory has a miraculous ability to come back from the dead). The Doctor can't even try to rustle up a cure for typhoid fever from the TARDIS (according to Wikipedia, there are quite a few antibiotics that would do the trick easily). And so forth and so on. The Doctor just seemed really useless in this episode.
It did have a few good moments-- the "yo ho ho" line, the hugging of the TARDIS-- but otherwise it was pretty awful. And the Siren immediately struck me as a ripoff of Star Trek: Voyager
, not to mention elements were swiped from previous Doctor Who
episodes like "The Empty Child" and "The Lodger." It was boring, it was unoriginal, and it made the Doctor look inept. A bad episode all around, IMHO.
