TV Guide sez:

In the premiere of this adaptation of author George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" medieval fantasies, King Robert Baratheon journeys north to offer Lord Ned Stark an important position in his court after the death of a trusted mentor. Meanwhile, the exiled Prince Viserys Targaryen uses his sister, Daenerys, as a pawn in his plot to return to power.

I think that was a pretty great beginning. Arya and Dany are both just as I imagined. I think they did a good job of laying the foundation for things to come.

Everything I was hoping for! So far, it's a faithful and earnest adaptation, pretty much exactly what was in my head while reading the books.

I love how people with the same hair color are related- helps keep everything straight! (HAHA!)

So, I wonder if Bran is going to die from his fall from the tower?

I have not read the books, in this universe is sibling incest a taboo?(just wondering because there seem to be two independent incidences).

I already do not like the high king's wife and her brother- the seem so duplicitous for no reason other than pure power(at least this episode did not give us one) and they HAVE power. Their brother (I wonder if he is younger, as they are twins) has a very realistic outlook on life, due to his dwarfism. I think he is the only one in that family I am going to like.

I have a touch more sympathy for Prince Viserys and his sister, even though his treatment of his sister was horrid, because he is attempting to get back a kingdom he feels is rightly his.

I like fantasy so I am in.

I really enjoyed the first episode. Tyrion, Jaime, Arya, Bran all fantastic. That hour went by fast.

One complaint. I do hope we get to see more gentle Dany/Khal scenes. It felt rushed and didn't convey the emotion I was expecting in their love scene.

I really enjoyed it. I think they did a great job introducing the major elements of the show, and I'm enjoying the performances.

Probably the one thing I was most pleased with is the way they handled Daenerys, especially the wedding night scene. I always felt in the book it was a little too much of a male fantasy (scared young virgin goes from terrified to sex kitten in an instant). The editing was spot on and I'm glad they didn't include the cheesy "Yes!" line. Ick.

The opening credits lived up to the hype. Sweeping, epic, and helpful!

I really liked it. I don't like Stark's wife quite as much as I think I'm supposed to. I just think she is a bitch for taking all her issues out on the illegitimate child. He seems to be the smartest and the nicest of the whole bunch! If she has a problem with Ned's infidelity, she needs to take it up with him. Although, I do understand the anger from having a constant reminder around.

What is up with the Queen and her brother. It seems like they had already been caught once. Didn't they learn any lessons. They aren't even at home and they had to find some secret place to screw? They are that hot for each other? I wonder if that son of the queen even belongs to the kind or if he is a super-blond incest baby.

I like Harry Lloyd a lot, but Viserys is one creepy mofo. He kind of seemed like an overeager royal nerd. Everyone seemed to be placating him to stave off any little tantrum.

Overall, this kicks Camelots ass. These people really seem to hate winter.

I'm familiar with the series. I had the Game of Thrones book but I never got around to reading it. Bad habit of mine. I will say that I enjoyed this first episode even though I was confused as to what was going on. A lot happening. Sean Bean's a favorite actor of mine. He always has that bugged out look of horror on his face which I find to be funny.

Okay I liked it but I don't know anyone's name yet. There is Sean Bean's character who has a bunch of sons including one that is a bastard. He is friends with the King who's Queen has two brothers, one that she LIKES a lot. Some blonde long hair creep wants to take the kingdom back from the King and is willing to use his blonde hair sister (who obviously HATES him) and give her up to the Hot Horse Dude.

Apparently, the wife of Sean Bean will figure out the Queen had something to do with her son's death. It's like CSI Fantasy World.

I will be back next week and hopefully I will know someone's name by them.

OK, all I can say is "Holy. Shit." That was incredible! My mind is officially blown. The scene with Bran getting thrown out the window was exactly as I pictured it - Jaimie's reluctance to throw Bran out, but also no hesitation. I think that that scene just really sold me on the character of Jaimie as he develops throughout the series - not that bad a guy, but driven by his love. Catelyn Stark was older than I pictured her, and Jaimie is not as much of a pretty boy as I thought that he'd be, but Viserys and Dany are perfect (not just the looks, but also the mannerisms and character). Love the direwolves. Love the cinematography. Just...so much love for this. I hope that the rest of the season (and all the other seasons!) is just as faithful to the books. Brava, HBO!

ETA: Also? Yay to TWoP for having a separate thread for the show!

Why do I feel that's going to be a frequent refrain for us newbies? FWIW, I think it's Brandon.

Hold on a second, am I right in saying......that the two people screwing in the attic are brother and sister?

Not a spoiler, they said it plainly in the beginning, just to give that last scene its extra punch.
So far, they seem to be going by the 80's high school movie rule: Blonde Male = Dick.

I was very impressed, especially considering that I'm a complete newbie to the series.

Even most of the positive reviews said that the episode was a bit ponderous, so I prepared myself for a bit of a slog. Maybe I overprepared, because I was surprised by how fast the time went. Forty minutes had passed before I even looked at the clock.

Definitely heavy on the exposition, but I felt like a lot of it contributed to the world-building aspect of the show, which I liked. I like seeing shows and movies create entirely new universes, so I'm willing to give a pass on some heavy-handed dialogue.

Again, I studied the reviews fairly obsessively, so I didn't really have trouble tracking who belonged to which family and what have you. I did have a problem distinguishing between Jon and Rob, and I'm usually pretty good with faces. They both have curly/wavy hair and similar bone structure, plus they seem to be around the same age. Hopefully that won't be a problem anymore when their characters develop a bit more.

Nitpick? Viserys's super-blond hair looked kinda fake. It was giving me early 90s Nelson flashbacks. Daenerys's looked fine though.

I have a feeling I'm going to be relying on Wikipedia a lot for some of these spellings.

Killer opening credits, but that's no surprise coming from HBO.

Been looking forward to this since they officially green-lit the project, and have not been disappointed.

So far things are looking good. It'll be a slow-ish start but will be a giant attack of scenery porn to go with the characters. As a first-episode, there seemed to be a bit shoehorning, but this is also to be expected.

My only worry is that in an effort to keep it within an hour-long format, there is going to be a lot of details that are unnecessary for readers of the novel but would be very helpful for those who would like to understand without breaking out the door-stopper or wiki-diving. That could turn off the casual viewers and impact whether they'll move on to Clash of Kings et al.

Never read the books (I know, shoot me, I'll pick them up now). Audible gasp from me at the end with nasty sister screwer tossing cute boy out of a window. Is it too much to hope that cute wolf puppy takes revenge? Or shooting arrow sister?

I had HBO free this weekend. Guess I'll have to go buy it now. Love their historical/epic series - Rome was a favorite, this looks like another 'blow the budget, let's do this thing right' type of series I can sink my teeth into.

Loved it. Pretty faithful to the book while having to make the necessary changes and adjustments for the sake of a television adaptation. Can't wait until next week!

It's kind of a grey area. The previous ruling dynasty, the Targaryens (the super blonde people), had brother marrying sister (or sisters) to keep their bloodlines pure and no one seemed to mind. I think Queen Cersei was more afraid of her husband the King finding out. Incest may be okay but cuckolding the king? Aw hell naw!

john68 - Yes. Yes you are. And they're not just siblings, they're twins!

I thought it was a pretty good episode, coming as a fan of the books. I didn't like the really bad obvious CGI of Bran climbing the towers of Winterfell, but hey, it's a TV show after all.

If you're confused as to the characters (so many dark-haired young men!) try HBO's character/locations guide: http://viewers-guide...ame-of-thrones/ -- if you click on a location, it will show you the family that lives at that castle and if you can click the family's name, you can see their family tree. Or check this "image guide to GoT characters" http://www.thedailyb...lleries/2805/1/ I perused it quickly and didn't see any obvious story spoilers, but there are some characters in it that won't be introduced until next episode or even later.

That was a definitely awesome series premiere! It was more than I expected. The opening credits, as well as choice interactions between the characters, really helped spell things out for any newcomers to the show. I did have to explain a bit of backstory to my friend, a newbie, but that all involved Ned's dead sister, which was something that confused me in the book at first too.

Excellent job on the visuals, it was really stunning to see. Kinda hard to tell some characters apart so far, even with reading the book, but they started out well.

My favorite bits were with Daenerys, even though she barely spoke at all this episode, but being scared shitless from her crazy looking brother and her huge warrior of a husband, it's understandable.

And is it just me, or does Robb Stark look like a younger, scruffier version of Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey from "White Collar?"

First off, yay for our very own GoT forum. Thank you TWoP!

I loved loved the first episode. It was everything I imagined and more. So much more.

I love the casting choices of all my favorite characters. Dany could have been cuter but I am fine with the actress they chose. I like the resigned way the actress is playing her now because who wouldn't be dead inside in her situation.

My little Arya is love.

Jon more so.

Tyrion is the perfect Imp.

Jaime should have been a teeny bit ugly. Still his good looks doesn't take away from his ugly soul.

The casting of Cercei, I thought they'll pick a more beautiful actress than that. That cold hearted bitch is supposed to be one of the most beautiful women around but I am not complaining. I wouldn't even have complained if she was ugly as sin.

I hope to see more of the Starks in the upcoming episodes.

I'm on book three right now (so I won't spoil anything plot wise) but yes, it's a taboo. Sort of. The Targaryens came from a different part of the area that believed it was all right to keep the blood line pure because they thought they were more godlike than the rest of the peoples of the land and therefore didn't want to "pollute" their blood with "mortal" blood. Their beliefs system is different from the rest of Westeros as well.

There are two other religions mentioned in AGOT (the Seven and the old gods) which does not condone incest of any kind. So if Jaime and Cercei were to get caught in fla grante so to speak, they would be in big trouble and not just because it would make the king and the kingdom look bad.

Okay, here we go. I haven't read the books. I liked what I saw. I think in terms of the Prince with the sister whom he whored out for his own benefit, these two need better wigs or something. It was hard to take either of them seriously with the obviously fake blonde hair.

Now, it's time for a little racialized reading of the text (series) thus far. The savage dark-skinned King who marries the pure blonde civilized virgin was problematic. If this series wants to keep my attention, I'm praying the writer isn't guilty of some of that same kind of white boy simple-mindedness we all know George Lucas for where whole races/species get reduced down to dysfunctional types (like the Jar-Jar Binks -- a whole breed of simpletons put in for punchline and comic relief).

So, I'll be watching to see if this culture gets fleshed out as more than dummies who for one white virgin go fight for homeboy, the prince. The whole savage thing with females dancing around with big titties getting fucked from behind was tiresome and seemed to be falling into the cliched savage other thing for me. And then the food looked disgusting and the entrails of the guy killed. Just laying it on a bit thick. By next week, I'm really, really hoping we get some more dimension to these people who have on war paint like some old time Indian savage western/Conan bit.

I did notice the girl/princes now savage queen seems, like her brother, to really miss home and want to go back. She perked up when she realized the one man was from home. In hoping the dark/savage king is more than a flat one-dimensional character who has his own agenda. It would be nice to see him use his army and become the King on the steele throne and let the new wife be queen and kill her brother, only after raping him..lol. Yeah, I don't like the guy. And I'm surprised he didn't finger the girl. The question is -- what's she get when she get back home, if she gets to go back home. I mean even if her newfound savage hubby does do the brother's bidding and restore him to the throne, that doesn't mean he's giving back the wife. Surely she can see helping her brother get the throne doesn't translate automatically to her getting to go home to...since she's the queen to the hot, barrel-chested hubby...

As for that prince who's so unapologetic about pimping baby-girl, I was wondering would he bend over himself and take the royal scepter of the savage King, for a shot at getting the throne. (Now, that would've made for a moment..lol).

As for the other brother/sister sibling set, it seems implausible that already having gotten busted in their own kingdom, these two would be so reckless as to have at it in an unfamiliar place.

Oh, and there's the little kid Bran and his sister, yet a third set. She's a better marksman -- very phallocentric stuff -- her arrow is straight and true. They seem like typical bickering kids. Now, if that little boy is killed, and I'm guessing he'll have to be or else he'd tell, that will be a shame. I liked his personality. If so, I'm hoping and guessing, his baby sister will somehow be his champion and get his dog too.

For those who've read the books, I'm sure the experience is very different for you. I am eager to see how the mystical wood killing, walker things tie in. That shit was genuinely creepy and intriguing. I felt bad for the guy who survived. He was likable and I guess that was the point.

At any rate, I'm in.

Quick and dirty cheat sheet for only the major characters introduced this episode:

King Robert Baratheon
Queen Cersei (nee Lannister)
Eddard aka Ned Stark
Catelyn aka Cat (nee Tully)
Robb Stark - eldest son
Sansa Stark - tall red-haired daughter
Arya Stark - short dark-haired daughter
Bran Stark - younger son
Jon Snow - bastard
Jaime Lannister - tall blonde knight
Tyrion Lannister - dwarf
Joffrey Baratheon - young blonde prince
Viserys Targaryen - platinum-haired guy
Daenerys Targaryen - platinum-haired chick
Khal Drogo - horse warrior guy

There are other children in the two major families, but no sense remembering them yet.

Arya is older than Bran. They are both as adorable in the books as they were on the show.

So far it, seems most people who haven't read the books feel the same about way people who have read the books feel .That goes to show just how true HBO stayed to the books.

I thought this was one of the best adaptations of an epic sword and sorcery fantasy that I've ever seen. I'd rank it right up there with "Lord of the Rings." While some of the characters don't look quite like what I pictured (Dany and Cersei among them), I think that the acting quality is very good--Bran manages to pull off the depth of the book and Jaime Lannister is creepily charming, just as he should be. Sansa is as shallow and spoiled as I expected and Jon Snow as noble, but I do agree that Lady Stark is lacking some. I wonder if it's that she's a bit older than I expected or if she's just kind of flat. I don't "buy" her characterization. Hopefully she'll grow on us. This is going to be the Imp's show if they aren't careful....

Twincest! Gotta love a show that goes there. OK yes, I haven't read the books (maybe now I will.) But this has serious potential. I may have to keep my HBO which I usually don't have. So far love....and hate everyone.

Felt really sorry for the super blonde chick who married dude on horse. That marriage is either going to go very bad or even worse. What her brother said to her was just plain evil.

Loved the Northern family. Thought they were great. So let me see if I got this straight. King needs new right hand so he brings along wife and her family in order to force long time friend to be said right hand. King once loved friends sister. Then wife has twincest and bro/lover ends up killing her husbands friend's young.,...and possibly favorite son. At least one war on the horizon... with evil brother who inappropriatly touches sister and then marries her off to a warlord to get back is kingdom to above King.

Oh yeah I'm gonna like this show.
