Wow. I would've thought
You're Gonna Get Rocked! would've done better than that, especially with such amazing lyrics as "gonna sock you in the heart/and leave a scar".
For those who don't know, Musical Youth and Howard Hewett (of Shalamar) were HUGE back then (along with Jimmy Cliff, who did Reggae Nights), so when Hearts Don't Lie only made it to #56, the writing should've been on the wall
then. A lot of people make the mistake of comparing La Toya to Janet, suggesting that the two are interchangeable and Janet basically "lucked up" into success. Some of the more serious
Church of La Toya members even say that the
What Have You Done for Me Lately is a ripoff of Heart Don't Lie. But come on...look at the two videos. La Toya, for some reason, was just lacking in the "it" department, and I can't quite figure out why, especially since she had so much help in the beginning. Around that time, La Toya was also the spokesperson for Nikon and Mahogany Image (a cosmetic line for women of color) and had a fashion line (David Laurenz for La Toya). Janet, on the other hand, was "damaged goods" from the get-go - a chubby-faced 19-year-old divorcee who breaks from the family compound and takes off for Minneapolis isn't going to be a fresh-faced lipstick model and sporting her own headbands. I don't want to say "complete and utter lack of even a trace of talent" as the reason behind La Toya's overall entertainment fail, but it's kind of hard not to.
On that note, it's the main reason why I find myself rooting for her, despite all. I honestly do believe that a lot of the shit she got herself into in the 1990s was due to
Jack Gordon (although I'm sure a good deal of it to do with her chasing stardom). The fact that her family seems to have accepted her back into the fold despite everything she did to tear them down speaks volumes, IMO. I'm glad that she's getting a good edit on this show; we see this week that she's hardly some empty-headed doll, and her showdown with NeNe seems to make her look like she won't be pushed around. Even if it's nothing but "Trump's flunkie", I just want to see her succeed in
something.
