I only saw Cruel Intentions on TV so that version might have been censored a bit but, for what I can remember, that character wasn't sexually repressed in the least. To be fair, I think I misremembered the quote. I looked up the article in question, and it sounds like SMG's portrayal merely inspired/influenced her, which is fair enough, IMO.
Problem is she's not borrowing aspects from other people: according to her, she's actually playing Sarah Michelle Gellar's character from Cruel Intentions. While I think that would be great if this were a Cruel Intention remake - or yet another sequel - it's not so great when this is supposed to be a completely different character for a completely different story.
So who is Phoebe’s ultimate inspiration? The Ringer’s Sarah Michelle Gellar! ”I grew up watching Cruel Intentions,” Phoebe reveals. “Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character [Kathryn Mertreuil] inspired me. Her repressed sexuality, that kind of very controlled mannerisms, and things like that. [Her mannerisms] definitely influenced my portrayal.”
*ETA: And the only mannerisms I can remember are the ones of Reese Witherspoon's character.
