Yeah I guess Andy does deserve a thread. For me he's an ok designer. I can't really remember being floored by any of this designs but I have no doubt in my mind he will make it to the final 3. And I guess he deserves congrats for winning the Heidi challenge but I don't think his name is mentioned anymore in the collection.

As a person, meh I don't know. He's kinda blah to me, I can't really remember anything about him except that he got really upset and distracted by seeing his mom. Oh and he used to dislike Michael C. but now he likes him.

Andy South on the local news a few days ago, with purple hair. (Haven't watched it yet--I'm on my work computer.)

And here's an article from back in July that I only just came across now.

I loved his black ribbon dress in the party store challenge, but I got really angry at him for joining the mean girls. Ditto with April. I'm hoping neither one of them wins (nor Gretchen, of course.) At least Ivy's out of the running.

Although the avant-garde designers are usually well beyond my ability to understand their POVs, I actually really liked Andy's work this season, and was hoping to get a chance to see a full collection from him. Glad that I'll see at least some of it as they evaluate who goes to Lincoln Center. I think one of the reasons I like his stuff is that his construction is generally so impeccable, even when he's working with multiple layers and textures (same for me with Mondo, though M's aesthetic is a little more my speed)

I loved the sweet, offhand way Andy said afterwards that he hadn't "used the Warrior Woman image for the last five challenges!" Which I thought was true, btw.

I think he doesn't realize how recently he has evoked that warrior woman.

Episode 8 -- He had the mc hsmmer pants which were sort of video game warrior inspired, imo. Episode 9 -- He had the over the knee boots, the big shoulders and the cut out -- very warrior woman. Episode 10 was a complete collapse of vision, but it was gray and black (again). Episode 11 was HeidiWear and I thought his dress there was very soft and nice. So maybe he could say he hadn't referenced her for two challenges, but that is all.

I do think Andy is VERY talented and has the potential to be the winner. His aesthetic is more Asian and maybe he has a better market there than in the U.S. Still, I wouldn't think it unfair if his collection looked great on the runway and he was the winner. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

I liked his warrior woman fashions except for the high fashion look. But the one I loved best was his very first outfit, it had pants, blouse and a really cool jacket, very attractive. Of course he got really lucky with is model, I honestly think she is the best on the runway, she sells every outfit no matter who the designer is 110%

I don't get much of a feel for Andy as a person either, but I do think he is a talented if very uneven designer and perhaps his blandness is a positive on this show. I don't think he's ready for the limelight yet. I think he has a lot to learn before he goes big time (women do not like wedgie pants, Andy!) but he's got the ability to go places.

The thing that I was oddly grateful for on the latest show? Andy grew up in circumstances that screamed "dirt poor and newly middle class" to me, but we only got his discussion of his single mom raising a lot of kids and growing up having to do rural chores and not the hammer in our faces about his poor background. I understand his ambivalence and distraction at seeing his mom. It really could not have been an easy childhood but at least it wasn't turned into some overblown sob story.

I hadn't thought about it that way. I hadn't seen it as a sob story, but I guess it could have been used that way.

I was just surprised. I didn't realize that Andy came from Laos. Is he ethnic Chinese or Laotian? Also I had thought he had such an urban edge, and then I learned he grew up on a working farm. He certainly grew up working hard and working for the family. People I knew who grew up that way had a strong sense of responsibility. I loved the whole farm scene with the humble farm house in the lush surroundings.

Wasn't Chloe Dao also from Laos?

Yes, she was also Lao. Huh, you know, Andy and Chloe have very different design sensibilities, but I recall Chloe liked pleating and also used quite a lot of silk shantung in her final collection, though I don't recall her having specially sourced it from Laos. I know shantung is commonly used in a lot of Asian design (as silk is produced in Asia) but I wonder if perhaps pleats are a common Asian, particularly Lao, design aesthetic as well?

Chloe Dao was born in Laos, but ethnically, she's Vietnamese.

Andy's full surname is Southiphong, which seems to indicate Laotian heritage.

Thanks for that!

I was wondering about Andy's last name because South is not an Asian looking name. When I see the full name, it makes more sense. To my untutored eyes, it looks a bit like a Thai name.

There was talk on some of the other boards about Andy getting in trouble for using pattern books. Does anyone know what became of that?

No one knows. Even the previews they showed of Heidi complaining about something someone did, were never shown in the actual broadcast.

Project Rungay interviewed Andy, and they asked him about the Pattern Magic allegation (he denies).
