From Zap2It:

The aftermath of Abel's kidnapping has the Sons reeling, especially Jax; Gemma still on the lam, is hit with some unexpected news from her past.

Those last five minutes might have been some of the most intense ever. My mind is still trying to process everything that happened.

THANK YOU TWOP for finally giving SOA its own forum!

Holy Shit!

I have to say, though--brilliant move to have the opening be a shirtless Charlie Hunnam. Well done!

Well. I guess there won't be a romance between Hale and Tara this season.

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Good title.

I think I'm gonna need the night to process this.

A few quick thoughts before bed time though:

I'm glad Jax and Tara didn't break up like I thought they would.

Is Hale dead? Dude I like Hale?

I really liked the smack down Tara gave Stahl, Gemma really is training her well. Was that a look of pride on Clay's face?

Holy balls @ that ending. Shortest tenure as Chief of Police ever? I actually liked Hale as an adversary for Samcro so I'll miss him, same with Half-Sack.

Damn, I just love Jax & Tara. Charlie Hunnam & Maggie Siff knocked it out of the park tonight. I'm really feeling all of their conflicting emotions and grief. The Clay & Tara interaction was also really touching and I LOVED Tara telling off Stahl, who remains as cunty as ever.

Gemma remains a fierce badass, loved her having trouble hot-wiring the car and then stabbing that dude near his junk.

This season is gonna be amazing.

I really wasn't expecting that last bit, especially Hale getting killed and Lila's son getting caught in the crossfire. They aren't afraid to do the unthinkable on this show, which makes it all the more exciting and gut-wrenching. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Holy shit, I don't think anyone saw that coming.

What an episode. Sons of Anarchy, showing again why it's the best show on TV.

A-ha! Took me a bit to find this thread - very excited that SoA has its own forum!

My best friend is expecting a daughter in mid-October and I offered to get her a Sons of Anarchy beanie. She said no. I might get one anyway, just to have on hand for when someone I know has a kid who'd be into it. They are adorable.

Opie must be pretty strong. Jax is not a small man. Jax looked so broken lying there in the nursery.and crumpled on the floor of the shower. Interesting contrast between Clay's "We're all so glad you're around" and Jax's "You don't belong here" re: Tara.

I think Tara was fishing, looking for Jax to say "No, honey, I don't blame you at all." But even if he DOESN'T blame her (and I think he does, rationally or irrationally, especially since Half-Sack died trying to save Abel), now is really not the time to look for reassurance. I think the only way Jax would respond positively is if Tara had approached it the way Gemma would: ready to go to war. Not mentioning herself at all, just "What do we do now, how do we get Abel back?" It's not ... fair, or reasonable, to expect a father (Jax didn't always have Abel's best interests at heart, like when he was all blase "Kill me, that's the only way I'll take off my cut," but I think if you asked him what meant the most to him, he'd say Abel) to think about anything but his missing kid. And I also thought "I would be so pissed if I came home from trying to find my kidnapped child and the nursery was busted all to shit."

"I don't need a boy to handle my shit." Word. "We don't know who we are until we're connected to someone else?" Nah, man. I mean, I know she was talking about her and Jax, but I have a very strong sense of self even though I'm single, and I've never bought into the "you complete me" hype.

When Gemma was checking car doors and one opened, I thought "What's she gonna do, hotwire it?" Then I remembered who it was and I thought " ... Probably." And then she stabbed that dude in the dick and I forgot everything else that was going on because HOLY SHIT.

The TWoP blog post was right: slow episode until the end, and then Goddamn! Poor Hale! And I was yelling at the TV when Jax was beating dude's head into the ground. "They're just going too let him keep doing that?" That guy's bloody, smashed face was INTENSE. I thought he was dead but then they seemed to arrest him, so I guess he's just really fucked up.

I thought (hoped?) it would be Opie's porn star/cokehead GF that got shot because of they way they kept showing her in slow-mo (I'd actually totally forgotten about her), but I feel bad that it was her son.

Wow! SOA comes back with a bang. I'm gonna have to watch that again at 11pm to process it all. I guess Jax took Clay's advice to heart. Why do I have the feeling Hale's brother had something to do with the drive-by?

I got the same impression, but only because I can't think of who else would do a driveby at the SAMCRO funeral. As far as we know the Aryans are gone, the Irish are in deep enough as it is, and those guys certainly didn't look like Mayans.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Hale's brother orchestrated it to try and make SAMCRO seem too dangerous for modern day Charming or something like that.

Interesting. If it turns out to be Jacob Hale behind it, I wonder how he'll feel about his brother being caught in the crossfire.

My reaction during the last five minutes, "ohmygod. Ohmygod! OHMYGOD! OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD!" I can't believe what happened to Hale. I love Hale. I don't want him to be dead, but there's probably little chance that he survived that.

So sad watching Jax finally experience the grief and the rage over losing Abel as he's trying to beat that guy to death.

Ironically in a show that does nuanced characters so well, Stahl is just such a pathetic cartoon character. She is lazy, craven, and nakedly opportunistic. It's impossible to feel even the slightest bit of empathy towards her. Half the time when Aly Walker is on the screen, I expect her to twirl her mustache and tie damsels to train tracks. She really is truly truly awful.

Finally with Paula Malcomson joining the cast for a while, how many Deadwood alums does this make. By my count 3, but I'm probably missing someone.

I'm sure he didn't expect that to happen. Collateral damage, I suppose.

Hale can't be dead. I like him!

I know this question will make me sound dumb, but what do you suppose Gemma saw in the paper that made her want to sneak away? It couldn't have been about the baby, and yet she already knew about Half Sack, so I was confused by that.

So happy to have a full SOA forum now! Thanks, TWoP!

Wow, so that was intense. I don't even know that I can comment on everything until I watch the second airing. I love that this show is on cable so that being on the West Coast isn't a handicap and I can see the 10 pm shows I love at the same time as East Coasters!

The whole cast was amazing, but I really felt Jax's desolation. And I thought I was going to burst into tears when Opie picked him up to put him in the shower.

Do we know that Hale is dead? I assumed he was just seriously injured, but everyone here seems to think he's gone, and they really did show him getting run over, not just hit.

That heartbeat as Jax walked over to bash the dude's head in gave me chills.

I was not expecting that to happen at the end. Jesus, this show knows how to open a season.

I liked the little humor in this episode, with Clay calling the informant 'Mr. Magoo' and Gemma needing glasses to hotwire a car. The nurse of Gemma's dad looks kind of shady. Also, I like seeing Tig and Gemma's closeness. It was good to see him apologizing for manhandling her. Based on his behavior last season and this episode, I think he's in love with her.

I hope Jax and Tara will be able to work through their problems. After seeing that kid killed(?), Jax looks like he will go off the deep end.

My roommate is adamant it was the Niners (which makes no sense), even though I backed up the DVR to show her it was a white dude Jax was beating the shit out of.

"I don't need a boy to handle my shit." That's my girl!

Three so far, I think you're right. I spend much of my tv watching time looking for Deadwood and The Shield alumni. FX is pretty good for both. FX shows are pretty good for both. :)

I think I saw a chunk missing from the back of his head when they showed him on the ground, so yeah, I think he's dead. I was under the impression he got shot AND run over, and that'll do it.

I hope Jax and Tara will be able to work through their problems.

Yeah, Tara seems determined to hang in there, but they're not out of the woods yet IMO. As I said, I do think Jax blames Tara on some level, and until Abel is back he's not going to be all-in with her, or anything else.

I don't think it was Lila's son. That woman was wearing different clothes I think.

I completely agree. Stahl went from being a "love to hate" character to just plain hate a looong time ago. Ally Walker just plays her as so smug that I can't find anything redeeming about her. I really hope they kill off Stahl this season, I've had enough of her.

I think that we saw the depth of her character when she broke down after Opie put a gun to her face last season. I think that the evil, mustache-twirling facade is exactly what she wants her colleagues and the club to see, although there's more there beneath the surface.

If Hale is indeed dead, it'll be interesting to see how she reacts.

Damn, that was awesome !!!

Hate the thought that Hale died... he will be missed, I loved his ~stick up his ass~ attitude.

I thought for sure it was Gemma driving the van at first, and then all hell broke loose... Wow !!

I barely recognized Hal Holbrook... can't believe how much he's aged. Seems like the feds would have been watching his house just in case Gemma showed up.

This is going to be an amazing season, so glad the show is back !!

That wasn't just a head wound. Hale's skull was crushed.

Pretty graphic for cable, I felt, actually.
