Whenever AMC announces a new original series, it's worth noting. Why? Because this is the network that produced the best dramas on TV, including "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad."

The new series is based on a D],anish television show and is about a murder investigation of a girl. The pilot was called "The Killing," but the show will have a diffeent name.

AMC's third original series is currently running, called "Rubicon." Its fourth series, which comes out near Halloween, is an adaptation of the comic, "The Walking Dead," about a zombie apocalypse (can't wait for that one!).

Here's info on the new, fifth series:

New York, NY – August 11, 2010 - AMC announced today a full series order for the pilot that was formerly known as The Killing, from writer and executive producer Veena Sud (Cold Case). Sud has signed on to also serve as the showrunner for the series, which is currently untitled. Set in Seattle, the series is based on the wildly successful Danish television series “Forbrydelsen” and tells the story of the murder of a young girl and the subsequent police investigation. Produced by Fox Television Studios, it is executive produced by Mikkel Bondesen (Burn Notice) for Fuse Entertainment. Fuse’s Kristen Campo co-produces. AMC first announced the pilot order in January 2010 with Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing the pilot. Production on the series begins this fall in Vancouver and season one consists of 13, one-hour episodes. The series is slated to premiere in 2011 on AMC.

Today’s announcement marks the fifth original series greenlight for AMC. The first four were Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Rubicon and The Walking Dead.

“We are thrilled to be moving forward with this stunning piece of television. It is a crime drama, but it is also a gripping character based story that pulls you in and doesn't let go. The storytelling is completely compelling, and the show is visually breathtaking. Veena, Patty, Fuse, FTVS and the cast did a phenomenal job of bringing it to life.” said Joel Stillerman, AMC’s senior vice president of original programming, production and digital content.

"Ever since Mikkel Bondesen brought us this remarkable Danish mini-series, we were determined to bring it to American television,” said David Madden, Executive Vice President, Fox Television Studios. "We are so proud to be working with AMC and our extraordinary cast on this very special series."

As “Sarah,” Mireille Enos (Big Love) portrays the lead homicide detective that investigates the death of Rosie Larsen. Other previously announced castings include: Billy Campbell (Once and Again, Enough) as Darren Richmond, Seattle’s City Council President, running for Mayor; Michelle Forbes (True Blood) as Mitch Larsen, the victim’s mother; Joel Kinnaman (Snabba Cash) as Stephen Holder, an ex-narc cop who joins the homicide division in the investigation to find Rosie Larsen’s killer; and Brent Sexton (W., In the Valley of Elah) as Stan Larsen, the victim’s father.

The series ties together three distinct stories around a single murder including the detectives assigned to the case, the victim’s grieving family and the suspects. The story also explores local politics as it follows politicians connected to the case. As it unfolds, it becomes clear that there are no accidents; everyone has a ]secret, and while the characters think they’ve moved on, their past isn’t done with them.

It sounds very good. I love scandinavian crime stories, and unconventional crime stories in general, and am too tied up with other languages to learn danish just for that. Love MadMen and BB, and If the reviews are good, will definitely watch.

Heads up for anyone in the UK/Ireland/etc: BBC Four will be showing the original Danish version of The Killing starting on Saturday. They're showing two episodes a years, so if my calculations are correct, it'll finish the weekend the AMC version starts in the US.

So if "The Killing" is not the name that they are sticking with, what will the new name of the show be? Does anyone know? Also, I wonder what this show is going to be like should it last beyond the first season. Is every season going to be a storyline of finding someone's been murdered and the detectives launch an investigation? In other words, will every season resemble the first season? I kind of hope not because that would be too repetitive. I'm hoping that this is just a crime show where they deal with all aspects of crime, and not just investigating and solving murders.

The Killing is the name of the show. They were going to change it, but decided against it (or couldn't come up with anything better).

I'm not going to get bothered about what they would do for a possible second season until Season One has at least started.

I would love to see the original Danish series first, but the only official DVD out there seems to be in Australia. Of course, that's PAL format, making the discs useless to the USA and Canada. I hope that the Danish producers get smart and issue an NTSC version of the seasons with English subtitles, as I surely can't be the only person out there who plans to watch the AMC re-make but who also wants to check out the original on which it is based.

Having said that, I am a little wary of investing my time in this AMC show now that the network burned me with Rubicon.

It worked for Durham County. The first season dealt with investigating a series of serial murders, the second focused on a dead baby, and the third was about some murders that happened around some drug trafficking. None of it felt repetitive. The concept can work. It's all in the execution, I think.

I'm looking forward to this show. I like my TV dark and twisty, and this looks like it might fit the bill.

I am looking forward to this! I saw the original when I was in Europe for Christmas - very gripping TV. If the remake is half as good it will be terrific.

Basically you get to follow the investigation into the murder of a girl in real time - from the discovery of the body and so forth.

Thanks for that Paul O Regan. It looks really intriguing. It wasn't raining enough in those Seattle scenes but it has a good dark feel to it. I hope they don't get too crazy with the "everybody has secrets" angle though.

Ah, it's shot in Vancouver. I missed reading that above. I knew something wasn't sitting right. Vancouver is not Seattle, contrary to what the showrunner (Veena Sud) would have you believe. However, her processes are interesting.

"The most important thing to me is not pornographize murder," Sud said. "I want to show the real cost . . . when a child is lost. What you see on the screen, in the clips that are already out there, is incredibly graphic, and heartbreaking.

"But we're not spending time looking at a dead child's body and just analyzing that. We're spending time with all the people who have lost her, the impact of this loss on her mother, on her siblings, on her father.

"Again, every episode is one day, about what happens every day in the moments and the hours after you've lost a child — what it's like to pick out a dress, what it's like to have to identify your daughter at the morgue, what it's like to make breakfast for her younger brothers the next morning. What do you tell them?

"When I was doing research for the pilot, I spent a lot of time with parents who had lost their children, expressly for the purpose of telling this story in a way that is authentic and respectful. Most television overlooks the victims. And what I kept hearing, over and over again, was not, 'Tell our story,' but, 'Tell our story in a truthful way.'

"If The Killing does one thing, I want it to be that."

I wonder what the final result will look like. It definitely will be a problem if they focus on the Seattle aspect more than just barely, because you can tell something's off if you know what Seattle looks like. Throwing a few shots of the space needle isn't going to help that.

I don't know if the ads are deliberately made that way, but they sure don't seem to fit with her vision of not wanting to pornographize murder. The ones I have seen over the past few days are pretty much that - screaming, absolute terror, darkness, etc.

For those who are interested, BBC4 currently has the first season of Forbrydelsen (with English subs) for viewing on its website. And, yes, there is an easy way to get around the fact that the site does not allow people from outside the UK to watch or download it, although I am not sure if I can mention the method here.

Poster. The exclusive videos were way too short. Like 40 seconds of content total. Oddly enough they looked both bad and good. The first one looked poorly done, and overly violency, and kind of nothing new here territory. The next one was a little more intriguing. I did get my hands on the originals but I haven't watched them yet. Time's running out, I suppose.

I love all of AMC's dramas and Cold Case was one of my favorite shows, ever, so this is a no brainer for me.

The Killing has a lot to live up to. I saw the first episode of Forbrydelsen. It's really good. Lots of water. I guess that's why they set it in Seattle (because Forks was taken and even though they're actually shooting in Vancouver). It'll be annoying when they inevitably depict the the wrong rain, but I guess it won't be surprising. One thing that made the first ep of Forbrydelsen so good was Ann Eleonora Jorgensen's acting. That and the water. I wrestled with whether or not to watch this for fear of the whole "book is better than the movie" phenomenon, but oh well. This is too good to pass up.

I have watched ten episodes of the first season of Forbrydelsen and it is indeed a gripping show. It's a slow burn, but the past couple of episodes, in particular, have been excellent. AMC's version certainly has a lot to do in order to match the quality of the Danish original. One thing that does concern me is that I assume, like other AMC shows, there will be only 13 episodes running at about 45 minutes each. Forbrydelsen had twenty episodes at almost 60 minutes each. The Killing may feel so compressed and rushed for those of us who will have viewed the original.

I'm wondering if the Seattle setting is because of its proximity to Vancouver. After all, in Forbrydelsen, Sarah's boyfriend lives in nearby Sweden, so perhaps the boo of AMC's Sarah will be Canadian.

I've been watching the original Danish version here on the BBC. No exaggeration to say that I'm slightly obsessed with it and it's my favourite show since The Wire (which is high praise for me).

From what I've seen of the clips, it seems as if it's being remade with a lot of reverence and I'm sure AMC will do a good job. I'm certainly interested to see what it's like.

One thing I like about it is that the characters are beautifully drawn (another Wire comparasion). For example, in most shows, the victim's family is quickly forgotten when the hunt for the murderer gets underway. Here, we see exactly how such a loss affects the parents and some scenes are just heartbreaking to watch.

The main female lead is brilliant too - not a maverick cop who doesn't play by the rules, but rather a quiet, introverted detective who's polite and pleasant to people.

There are some new videos about the show at the AMC site. I shouldn't have watched the original, because now the AMC verson is like watching muppets play the parts. No I'm serious. It's like watching Muppets play the parts. The AMC lead detective has something comically puffy going on, while her partner looks like the bug eyed muppet with the whiskers. The poor father...bork bork bork.

Seems interesting. I haven't seen Danish original, but trailers for The Killing made me think of Twin Peaks. Which is not very good thing for me.
Anyway, I still have high hopes for this. Although I have lost a lot of respect for AMC after cancelling Rubicon [for me, much better show than Mad Men - which I also consider pretty good. Haven't seen Breaking Bad, but hopefully I will sometime] and even worse - not canceling Walking Dead.

Oh, boy! I'm getting more excited about this. I've been looking forward to it in a sort of vague, that-looks-interesting sort of way, but as it gets closer and more details come out, I'm finding myself more and more intrigued. I had no idea before a few days ago that Michelle Forbes is in it, she's not listed in the cast on IMDb. Nor is Callum Keith Rennie, who is in one of the pictures from the show that popped up on IMDb recently (I'm imagining in a small role since he didn't make it into the trailer). He's one of my favourite actors, so that's good news. Since The Killing filmed in Vancouver, I'm wondering if any other BSG alumni will pop up.

It's definitely a downgraded version and the writing seems rushed and a lot poorer, but it should be at least viewable initially. "Scored some x" and some of the other lines create a disjointed feel when I think that what the original did so well was throw you off by making almost everyone's behavior stand-offish enough to seem suspect. The dockworker friend, the main suspect, the parents, friends, ex, politician, his employees. They seem to have lost that here on first glance.

Also, it's just the preview but I'm betting they fail on the water aspect too. Maybe they'll replace it with some well thought out thread to make the series their (AMC) own, but I'm not thinking so.

AMC may do their own thing but based on 16 of 20 episodes of Forbrydelsen, it is far removed from Twin Peaks. The latter had its foundations in fantasy and the absurb whereas the former is gritty and real. And fantastic. I can't think of another show ever where I've had to remind myself to breathe.
