I read Marcus' bafflement at the end when he won not as him not being able to add, but him just completely zoning out as he was so certain Susur would win. After all, he didn't need to add - he was told he needed 4 stars(?) to win, then got more than that. Even if he was a 6-year old, if he'd been paying attention and/or expecting to win, he'd have known.

The first thing I thought of when "depressed" came up is how to turn it around. I wish the chef had said: "let's think of it as a tropical depression - a storm of flavor, an intense experience" and gone from there. Get a good sauce and a smoked flavor, he could have done all kinds of things.

Burnt sienna is one of the many colors that a painter could use; Vincent van Gogh was a depressed painter.
So Jonathan should have carved Van Gogh's likeness out of the avocado.
