Interesting episode. Looks like we're finally going to see more with Bonnie Bedelia. Hope that thread gets fully played out. The kids, like many in real life, seem to assume that their parents will always be there, and seem to see them as parents but not individual adults. Nice to see them come together for their mom and dad and look beyond their own worries/fussing.

The only thing that bothers me is Joel. Does that character have any redeeming qualities at all? He's so unlikable.

I felt for Max. He really was trying with the other kid. But, since when do kids dictate when you leave company? Every child in my life when we are a guest at someone's home and they didn't want to play with the other child they simply sat by their parents and said they were tired and didn't want to play anymore. Simple as that.
Amber's on a slippery slope. Bonnie did great tonight. I felt so bad for her when she excused herself from the dinner table. I wonder why the Braverman siblings are so nervous about dealing with their parents as grown ups. I'm far younger than all of the siblings and I always know when their are problems and try to help with my older family members. We they really that sheltered? It doesn't seem healthy. I did like the bickering the two times they were all together. Also liked the touch of Camille leaving with her echo reusable bag.
Amber certainly wasn't that sheltered. Still love Drew. Liked that he was had the snark but was not a biatch in the pawn shop. I think I love his mumbling. Usually I hate mumblers but it fits him.

I was kind of disappointed that Julia passed up the chance to rip Raquel a new hole for telling Sydney that lawyers are all liars. I initially appreciated that Julia let the Raquel thing alone so that Syd and Harmony could be friends, but bad-mouthing a child's parents is WAY over the line for me. Think childhood trauma at the hands of people who disapproved of my mom because she worked. Shit like that hurts families. Sydney can make new friends, she only has one mom.
Steve is reeling Amber in like a great, big, gullible fish. I want Amber to wise up and kick his lying ass.

Given the intense physicality of the other kid, and Max's evident discomfort with it (didn't seem like the kid was respecting Max's desire for some more physical space), I'd have absolutely taken him home. Kids need to have a way out of uncomfortable situations. It did seem like, when they went back, a more structured game with more adult involvement was great for both boys, and they probably could not have had that second chance if they made Max stick around and be uncomfortable (and possibly lose it) on the first try.
My kids are a lot younger than Max, but when they ask me if we can go home, I generally take it as a sign that meltdown is imminent and we should go.

My question of the week: How the heck did Sarah apply, get accepted into, and then enroll in college art classes so damn fast? A week ago Amber merely gave her the idea to apply to Berkley, and now you’re expecting me to believe she’s already doing school projects on Photoshop? Even if it's a community art class or something, the timeframe of this is still confusing, or am I missing something? And were we supposed to be impressed with her Photoshop collage? When the mom fawned, "See? Told you you could do it.”, I was thinking, Ummm...I could do that.

How out of touch are the writers that they had a guy as young as Crosby making a Pele reference? Sheesh.
Are you serious? I'm 25 and I know that Pele is pretty much one of the greatest soccer players ever along with Maradona. And they're both from back in the day. Maybe you're the one who's out of touch. ;)
So my husband and I both thought that Steve is totally playing Amber to get laid because he knows she's easy. Which is too bad because she was totally cute and sassy tonight.
I cheered when Hattie broke up with Steve. I thought that was a good thing to show on a television show: You CAN break up with your horny boyfriend. You don't have to have sex with him until you're good and ready. And I'm glad Egg backed her up on that choice.
On another note, man, it's gotta suck to be Crosby and Zeke. They're surrounded by absolutely beautiful people that they don't hold a candle to.

I think this every episode. Peter, Lauren, Bonnie and Erika are so attractive and then there's Dax...
I was rooting for Julia to talk some smack back to Raquel. I wish she would stick up for herself but at least her team won.

Amber becoming friendly/cozy with her [first] cousin's ex boyfriend? Dumb. Seriously. For me, there would be no rationalizing that.
I also didn't understand why Joel, as a SAHD and a more flexible schedule, didn't coach the team. I highly doubt that Julia had the time available (as seemingly a mid-level associate...I think I remember her saying something about being a 4th year) to coach the team. That said, I really liked it. And Joel can kick rocks. The look he gave when Julia walked away all excited about winning was ridiculous. Why couldn't you just be happy for your wife, daughter, and new nephew? C'mon son!Aww Julia finally won without being seen as the bad guy. But why the heck Joel (who stays home all day) be the couch? Plus he still doesn't seem to like Julia.
I actually thought that Scrapper was talking about the other boy who faked a stomach ache, not the other boy that was rolling on the ground. Please correct me if I'm wrong, Scrapper.Given the intense physicality of the other kid, and Max's evident discomfort with it (didn't seem like the kid was respecting Max's desire for some more physical space), I'd have absolutely taken him home. I felt for him when he was obviously uncomfortable with the other Aspergers child invading his personal space and than he was was forced to play with him again at the end of the episode.
And, Max really was trying with the second child and he got rejected. So Max was screwed either way tonight. Poor little guy.
Sarah did find the condoms and I'm sure she assumed but having it confirmed it different. Plus having it confirmed that her mom knew and was heartbroken about it was prob what really hurt. It wasn't her dad's betrayal it was that her mom knew was truly hurt but let it slide at the time.
It's true. Craig and Dax aren't the best looking of men and their characters being "ladies men" and them being total asses is not helping. It's just making their outer appearances even more glaring. Esp since almost all the other actors are so attractive. Even the little kids are traditional cuties. It's true. I mean there is Bonnie, Erika, Lauren, Peter, Monica, Sam (Joel?), and than there is Dax and Craig.

Amber is TOTALLY convincing as Sarah's daughter. The actress nails the mannerisms.
I liked that Adam offered to play with bugs with Max after the second kid bailed. He did it so automatically that it came across as totally empathetic and sincere, and not a forced "heroic parenting" moment.

I don't get why people keep saying how weird looking Dax is. He's not "Hollywood handsome," but he'd appeal to women who prefer someone a little unconventional. I dated his type in my 20s. Craig T. Nelson isn't a bad looking guy either. I just want him to get a haircut. But he's actually very straight-edged by Berkeley Boomer standards. I've worked with enough truly long haired (pony down the back) 60-something men to know.

Not liking the Haddie/Steve/Amber story... not because it's bad but because it's going to be painful. I thought, for a moment, that maybe Steve was really falling for Amber (Amber seems to be) but now I agree with Not a Toaster, it seems like Steve is playing her. It's going to be awful. It seemed a little sudden that Haddie broke up with him but good for her. It was nice to see a tv character not give into pressure. Sarah's Photoshop work was hilarious. But hey, I guess for a newbie, it's alright.
Jasmine, blah. Crosby handled getting caught as well as he could but instead of Jasmine saying, "no more fooling around", how about... I don't know... talking to your kid?! Maybe say, "we were seeing if maybe Crosby could stay over some nights, so we could all spend time together more often but we wanted to make sure before we told you" or something. And then she backtracked, letting Crosby "sleep over". She's bugging me.
I liked the siblings bickering in the car, Crosby saying he wouldn't say "unconditionally" and him saying, "it makes me uncomfortable but I'll be there". Absolutely hated Zeek's expression in the final shot. I don't know, it just struck me like he was thinking, "hey, you ganged up on me and now I got kicked out... you have to take me in, sucker".

That reference gave me pause as well. Would Beckham have been too hard?
w, it just struck me like he was thinking, "hey, you ganged up on me and now I got kicked out... you have to take me in, sucker".
I saw it more as they were having one conversation with their mouths and another with their eyes. His fault or not, Zeke is humiliated but knows that at his worst he can depend on Adam. So his presence and posture and "Hey Sonny" all tacitly begged for help while Adam's eye-roll said "good grief". But because of the delicacy of the situation, zeke couldn't quite bring himself to humble himself further (and risk a no) and Adam couldn't quite bring himself to kick a man when he was down by calling his dad out on his presumptuousness. Not the best scenario but true to the characters and a father and son like them.

Whew! I thought I was just getting hideously nasty and cynical and seeing despicable motive where there was none (esp since I've hated that character from the beginning!).So my husband and I both thought that Steve is totally playing Amber to get laid because he knows she's easy.
There's the Bonnie B who was Oscar-nominee material (Heart Like a Wheel)! I knew they'd let her loose eventually. And I thought for the first time, as the Braverman kids stood together at the end, that they looked like siblings. That group of four has such fabulous chemistry. I love any scene where it's just the four of them -- in the car, in the school parking lot, etc.
I'm liking the show even more now that things don't get tied up as neatly. Just watching Peter Krause tonight, looking on as his vision of his perfect extended family slid between his fingers like so much sand = heartbreaking. LOVE HIM.

I think Crosby can be appealing. Zeke definitely needs a hair cut, and I think he would be fine.
The Pele reference is not that out there, several of my younger nieces and nephews know about him but they also all play soccer, and I lived with a family when I first moved to NY, who watched a lot of soccer. I enjoy soccer more than football.
I really hated the whole Amber/Steve plot line and really thought he played Amber. I was glad Haddie did not cave into the blanket moment, and told him that she was not ready to go all the way. Then she dumped him, thank goodness.
Bonnie B was awesome last night and of the two parents has been my favorite from the start, but I can see why she is with Zeke. It broke my heart when she realized what was happening and the lack of respect that Zeke had shown her. Can't wait until Sarah tells Adam. That should be interesting. Then of course, the whole gang will have to know. Oh the fun.

I am starting to get really annoyed at Joel's attitude. He seems to treat Julia like she's a joke, waiting for things to blow up in her face. Not cool at all. I think that marriage is going to fall apart unless he changes his attitude.
Jasmine is totally toying with Crosby's heart by letting him sleep over when she's not sure she wants to be with him. That's another relationship that's not going to last.

The soccer plotline bothered me not because it was Raquel v. Julia again but just because it was inconsistent.
Raquel is just a plot device at this point. They load her up with whatever trait they want in order to create friction.
I give Julia snaps for walking the talk, and being the kind of coach she said she'd be - the kind that redefines winning by being a team and having fun. I don't blame her a bit for putting Jabbar on the team. It's not like she hurt anyone, and clearly Jabbar had a great time. Yeah, so her competitive spirit came out, but she didn't transfer it to the little ones. She just let them do their thing and encouraged them. Good for her. Suck it Joel.

The little boy who plays Jabar appears to be a very good soccer player for his age, so maybe that's why they decided to do this storyline. I did like the circle of kids and the little breakdancer. The second game they showed had a final score of 7-6, but you'd never know it. All they showed was Jabar schooling everyone else on the field, with the tye dye coaches looking sad on the sidelines.
