BURBANK, Calif. and ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Oct. 27 -- The world of gladiators comes to life as the Roman Empire's most brutal fighters clash in the ultimate arena. Starz's new series, "Spartacus," an entirely new twist on the ancient legend, will utilize virtual environments giving it a unique graphic novel look and style, along with a fresh narrative approach. Debuting exclusively on Starz, "Spartacus" will be produced by Starz Media with Executive Producers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Joshua Donen. The announcement was made today by Stephan Shelanski, executive vice president, programming, for Starz Entertainment. It will begin production in early 2009, debuting on Starz and its suite of channels later in the year. Source

Having seen bits of the screener:
(1) The CGI, it's so bad, it burns!
(2) Lucy Lawless!
(3) Wow, they got some actual real actors for this. That is kinda disturbing
(4) Peen!

Holy porn! You weren't kidding with that thread title. I guess Starz wants to prove that it can hang with the premium cable channels.

For me, the CGI was whatever. But Lucy Lawless's red hair? That was so bad it burned.

LolaRuns, please forgive my ignorance, but could you explain #4?

Basically Peen = silly word for penis. After the first I was kinda miffed at the double standard, lot of porn, nudity, but it's kinda silly do do all that and then skirt around the penis. And then, lo and behold, in the second episode there was some random gladiator goodies in the background. One of those scenes where the gladiators from the ludus face off with main guy.

Speaking of which:
(1) I'm really disappointed that they have to go through the whole silly: "He's a man of peace! He's doing it all only for his wife!" spiel. Because lo and behold somebody from that era would do it out of bloodlust, for money or because life simply doesn't matter to them too much. Storywise, him starting out bad and then wisening up would have been much more interesting. I read that historically there were some theories that Spartacus was educated, so him being very politician like and having some aspirations of powers would also have been interesting. But for him to be that perfect and saintly from the beginning is a bit clicheed.

(2) That said, cheesy as it might be, I do like how they are doing the dance and not revealing his true name to us.

(3) I was so glad that they cut off his long hair in the second episode. That way he's actually pretty good looking (and he stopped giving me "Oh look, it's killer Jesus!" vibes). He might not be a great character but he certainly does something for the shallow parts of me.

I think what's disappointing to me is that on one hand it seems to try hard to outdo Rome when it comes to sex and gore but at the same time doesn't draw the consequences the way Rome did, namely by having the characters behave in a way that would actually befitting of the time they life in, in regards to morality, sexuality and violence wise. I get the romance angle but I kept thinking if it wouldn't be more in character for a man from his time to show disappointment in his wife being soiled now or just write her off as dead when the Legatus suggested she'd been gangraped?

I also wish that for once a show would acknowledge that the various people there spoke different languages. Even if we assume that English = Latin here and everybody spoke some Latin, it would be a nice change of pace if all the non Roman leads actually had an accent. But I guess a main character with a foreign accent (even though it would probably make the reactions that Romans might have been to him more recreatable) would be too daring.

I squeed a bit when I realized that Darken Rahl from Legend of The Seeker is in this. He is deliciously evil again. His voice just drips with slimy evil. It's almost kinda amusing how all characters either curse all the time or speak like they are in some sort of epic play. Though overall this is probably the closest thing to cheesy melodramatic pornographic fanfiction in tv show form that I've ever seen.

Sigh. But looking at the list from the behind the scenes people I figure it must get better, right?

IMO the biggest difference to Rome seems to be that this is a more personal story while Rome cared about the political. Plus, Rome always seemed to have many different stories and layers of stories going on. This feels like it's just one single story strand.

I do really like John Hannah. Always had a soft spot for him.

Does anybody know how many episodes of this there are supposed to be?

I really wish they'd do away with the terrible blood spurting effects. The actual battle effects with all the 300 style slow motion flying through the air actually isn't half badly executed, but the fake looking blood makes the whole thing look cheap. Maybe the special effects will look more polished in the final version?

I have to say, I'm a but puzzled who their target audience is supposed to be. It seems like there is almost too much muscular male nudity to work for a straight male audience. Then again, that didn't stop 300...

I'd probably guess at around 10-13 episodes, the same as most other cable shows. Between a redheaded Lucy Lawless bearing a stunning resemblance to Polly Walker (tremendously distracting in both good and bad ways) and the idea of the producers of Legend of the Seeker making a serious premium cable show...I'm not sure what to think about this yet.

Bad ways? How could resembling Polly Walker in Rome be a bad thing? Excepting of course, that Atia has already been done before. The problem is the character was clearly designed to be Atia pt.2, which is setting up poor Lucy Lawless to fail.

I just watched the trailer and it looks so bad it's awesome. It's like Rome meets 300 but with a much cheaper budget. Hilariously awful. I do adore John Hannah though so I'll be watching. Starz must have a lot of faith in it since they ordered a second season even before it premieres. Is that unprecedented?

Fox ordered a second season of The Cleveland Show months before it aired, but animation shows generally take longer to produce.

It was actually quite entertaining once things got going, in an action-y kind of way at least. However, I'm curious how they will stretch the story. Somehow I foresee that they'll likely get into trouble balancing "rising in the gladiator ranks is probably a lot more fun to watch than uprising and politics" and "when do we finally progress and get to the politics parts?".

[I'm from the party that would gladly watch two seasons just gladiator stories [I picture it kinda like Oz for gladiators, though ideally with less raping]]

And I squeed when I realized that Haldir from Lord of the Rings is in this -- go kickass gay elf!

It is quite a cast -- I'm amazed that John Hannah is doing this, although I suppose it is a premium cable show, and thus carries some cachet. (I presume that Lucy Lawless has some contract to be in all Rob Tapert vehicles.)

Well, she is married to him. There was actually a scene in the pilot where Lucy's character is supporting and assuring John Hannah's character not to give up hope that they will get the funding for their enterprise that made me wonder if that was at all a real life moment.

I really like John Hannah in this though the whole "trust me and submit to me because I'll give your life meaning" felt a bit rushed and contrieved to me. Though I guess it's still preferable to having to watch Spartacus bitch about it for a few more episodes. I still think I would have liked it more if it had been more along the lines of "Well, you are in a foreign place, you have no friends, you have to trust me to be your alley, so do what I say and I'll see what I can do about your wife" without spelling out the philosophy and psychology stuff.

But overall that's a minor nitpick.

I've watched the first ep. It was interesting enough, but looked too cheap. Almost every scene has some crappy CGI in it, and some of the sets were dreadful.

But watching some great bodies prance around naked once a week never hurts.

The only reason I plan on watching this is Lucy Lawless...and the gratuitous nakedness. And, John Hannah is there too? It always pains me to see him less than comedic, given my love for his Johnathan character from the Mummy series.

I just saw the 1st two episodes that have been prereleased. They could not have been more different. Stylistically they do not resemble each other in any way. That is good, because the 1st ep was terrible. I mean really, really bad. Unbelievably awful. It is like they made a period porno, and decided to add fight scenes in the style of kill bill (not 300), but it was still the porno people doing all the chirography and CGI, and writing, and they had to do it in the budget of a sci fi channel original. There are about six words between each series of thrusts (sword or pelvic). It wasn't even OK when compared to other period pornos I've seen. Nor was it bad enough to be good. Mainly because about 1/2 of it is slow motion thrusting (sword or pelvic), and another 1/4 is thrusting in real time. Also, there is no sense of fun at all. If they don't re-shoot or re-edit this episode I would be stunned. Why they would release it to screeners is beyond me.

The second episode on the other hand was very OK. Not great. They really hamstrung themselves by tying so much of Spartacus's motivation to his captured wife, so the story wasn't compelling, but the characters had a few conversations that weren't just preludes to screwing or stabbing. And they dropped about 3/4 of the porno elements and nearly all of the CGI and Slow-mo. There was about as much combat in the 2nd episode as there was in the 1st, but it was done more in the style of Gladiator than Kill Bill, and it felt like the choreographers knew what they were doing enough to not embarrass themselves. The plot and supporting characters remain pretty much a blank slate which should allow them to fill in details. It looks like they could really mine the drama of the brotherhood aspect of being on a team of gladiators. There was still no fun, but there was action.

I think everyone should avoid watching the 1st episode unless they rework it, but feel free to check out the 2nd.

Tried to watch the first ep last night. Made it to the battle with the Getae and couldn't take it anymore. Really bad CGI, bad dialogue, awful slow-mo action scenes, enemies that look like deformed orcs... no thanks. Not even Lucy Lawless is worth sitting through this crap.

I watched the episodes as well, and I have to agree that the production in the first one wasn't so good. I didn't mind the story though: Probably it was a good idea to get Spartacus' origin out of the way. I liked that we never know his name too. I got enough out of the episode that he's a decent guy who got really pissed off when the Romans started acting like pissy bitches. Hey, man, you probably should have seen that coming. I didn't care for the fight scenes, they were doing too much with the freeze frame. I did like the final gladiator battle when he took on the four of them. First episodes of series tend to overdo it, then everyone settles in. This didn't seem any different.

For episode two, I hope that this is the way the rest of the season would be shot. It was much better: Basically, everything happened in the yard or three rooms in the house. That was kind of cool. It was almost like a watching a play. Spartacus looks a lot better with the shorter hair too. Since I don't think it's a big surprise about what he's eventually going to do, I sort of like the move by Quintus (?) to hold the wife over Spartacus' head. You know he's eventually going to figure out what's up, and it's becoming pretty clear that this isn't the type of guy you want to piss off, slave or not.

There's enough going on that makes me interested in tuning in for more. Starz has a good record with me, with Party Down and Crash.

On a shallow note, I just absolutely love all the nakedness, the men and the ladies. I read an article in EW I think, where Lucy Lawless says after her first shoot being nude she just wanted to hide from everyone for a while. Lady, you ain't got no reason to hide. Rowr. Also, I found it twistedly hot that: LL and the husband were casually talking while being 'fluffed' before sex.

No kidding. As a hopeless lover of anything even slighty related to ancient Rome, I had to check it out and watched several clips on YT, so I went from weakly smiling through giggling to sneering when Spartacus and his glamorous, skinny, sword-wielding chick were exchanging the dialogues of "-No one will keep me from you. Not even gods. - I will kill them all if they try" variety. Then I ended up in fits of open mirth when the skinny chick (they didn't even keep her book's name - Warinia) was jumping around roaring and cheerfully stabbing guys twice her size amidst spectacular splashing of blood.

Love the title of this thread BTW. I'm fairly sure this series will last several seasons though while HBO cancelled 'Rome' after only two.

Well, it already has two seasons set, so it's already running equal to Rome -- and as that's two 13-episode seasons, that puts it ahead of Rome by four episodes. Plus there's the issue of Lawless' sex scene in the second episode, which is going to draw the looky-loos, guaranteed: Xena getting her kit off? Low-rent Atia (with less revealed), but the softcore stuff should keep people coming back, especially with the blood and guts between.

The CGI is utterly dire, though. I hope it gets cleaned up a bit before the actual airings. What I don't understand is that if the show's shot in New Zeland, why they couldn't do more of the exteriors actually, well, outside. Radical thought, I know. I could give them a pass on the school, although, again, some work with translights and photos would serve them very well indeed.

When the Senator, his son-in-law and John Hannah were talking about the name of the Thracian gladiator, I kept hoping Spartacus wouldturn around and say "My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius"...but no such luck.

The first episode was available on-demand for free, and it was terrible. Terrible acting, terrible writing, pretty much terrible everything. And the "sci fi channel original" is spot on because the entire time I was watching I thought "So this is what a 'SyFy' series about Ancient Rome would look like if they left out the mythical creatures and added in lots of nudity". In fact, I'd say

Starz Spartacus = "SyFy"'s Ancient Rome - Mythical Creatures + Nudity + "History" Channel's fight scenes from Ancients Behaving Badly/Battles BC/etc.

If they make the second episode available for free I may watch, but there's no way I'm paying for this.

If anyone goes into "Spartacus" thinking it's going to be "Rome" they are going to be bitterly disappointed. Frankly, I don't even think this show belongs in the Drama section of TWoP, IMO it should be in the SciFi and Action section because that's the tone and intent. This show is a live-action graphic novel, not a BBC presentation on the meditations of Marcus Aurelius and, if the premiere is any indication, it most certainly is not going to be "Rome" so all history loving viewers should keep that in mind.

Also, from the article in Philly.com

Lawless added that "the show finds its groove in about Episode 5. Every series takes a little while to figure out what's the tone of the show, where its boundaries are."

I've heard this from a number of people and reviews, that the first couple episodes are sloppy by comparison to the rest of the series and that by the end of the season it supposedly really get crackin', which is about right. I've found that shows with awesome pilot episodes ("Heroes") tend to peter out whereas some of my favorite programs ("Buffy") had shaky initial shows but once things kicked into gear turned out to be time well spent.

I sure don't have a problem with a live graphic novel, so that alone would keep me watching. However, there was enough improvement between E1 and E2 that got me interested enough to stick around. The cast is good enough that I would expect them all to be able to kick in eventually, and even if the writing is kind of cheesy in this cast it seems most of them will be able to make it work. Five episodes is probably the limit I would watch for a show to kick in. So that's promising news. I expect since it is a larger cast they need time to establish multiple story lines. So far there's really only been 2, maybe three.

I agree. I just watched the premiere on Starz.com and went straight to those forums to comment. Though, considering how much of this show is done with CGI, it might belong in Cartoons.

It ain't Rome, but it just might reach the same level as The Tudors. Frankly I'm so tired of franchise shows about cops, doctors, and lawyers that any TV show which takes its cues from movies deserves my respect.

Finally saw the pilot (which, I could've watched a while ago had I know it was on demand) and it was fine. Definite room for improvement, but if LL says that around episode 5 it hits it's stride, then I'm in (hell, even Xena was iffy during the first set of episodes).

When Spactacus's wife said "Kill them all," I had an immediate Xena flashback, though.
