Finn Hudson: Quick on the Trigger

If it wasn't for the whole High School Musical hootenanny of suck ruining the entire concept, I'd probably say that Finn is my favourite TV character of the 21st century. Sigh.
Your thoughts on Finn? (I didn't actually have too much to say, but that thread title was calling out to me for some reason.)

I have a football scholarship?
I like that he's self-aware that there's more to life than high school. He really does want to get out of that town and do something with himself.
It will also be interesting if his mother's ex-boyfriend/lawn care guy will be in future episodes.

You wish.Do I really have him all to myself?
Heh.
"I'll pee in a cup. *lowers voice* I'll pee." Ha! What also made it funny was Will's "Oh, shit" face when he mentionned the cup peeing. He surely didn't think of that!

And I love that "I'll pee in a cup" scene so much, but my favorite moment of his from the pilot is the "You're the One That I Want" scene. Finn singing with that terrified look on his face as Rachel's moving towards him with so much enthusiasm is pretty much the moment I fell in love with this show.

But is he really the "anti - Troy Bolton"? That is debatable....

I agree that he's not the strongest singer in the bunch, but I think it actually (rather conveniently) works for the story they're telling. Will was desperate to find someone, those who were willing to audition had already done so, and he ended up hearing this guy singing in the shower. It was the best Will could do on short notice, and Rachel was more than happy that he got her a cute boy who could sing even remotely well. The fact that he's rough around the edges with both the singing and the dancing actually fits the character quite well, since he's an amateur. I think part of that awkwardness is Monteith himself, but it works, and if he can improve over time, it will make Finn's improvement seem more authentic.Monteith is a pretty good actor and plays the role of the sensitve jock very well. Good comic timing too. His singing is marginal though, and the auto-tune unit hasn't worked that hard since the boy band craze of the 90's. Still, I thought his rapping on Push It was competent and convincing for the character he is portraying, so he works for me.
Finn is definitely one of my favorites so far, probably second after Rachel, but that could change depending on his storylines and on how well some of the other club members are developed in the future. Right now, he and Rachel are the most developed of the younger characters, so they're my favorites because I don't know enough about anyone else!

I'm just glad that he's actually 27, which means that my prurient fantasies aren't that bad. I think he's cute as a button, and Chris Klein is now the poor man's Cory Monteith.
I couldn't agree with you more. Let's just hope he keeps that baby face. Nothing is worse than a "high school student" who's showing his age...

Okay, that's out of my system......
I am endlessly amused by how either honestly stumble-footed Cory actually is, or by how well he's playing Finn as a guy who really can't dance. I've known a lot of drummers, and I don't know one who can move their body like they can move their hands and feet.
That said, I am charmed by the character of Finn.

"Is this one of those chick things where you're pissed about one thing but you're just pretending that you're pissed about something else?"
He usually seems pretty clueless.
Also if a girl acted like that around me in highschool I definitely wouldn't have picked up on it. It totally would've been a classic "Well what's with her?" moment.

I chalk it up to him having been raised by his mom and seemingly being very close to her.

I've seen rehearsal tapes on YouTube in which he expresses how horrified he was at the realization that this role would involve dancing, so I think that there's a bit of reality in there. Fits the character, though.

Actually, Maximum Taco, that didn't surprise me at all; I have a friend who is a lot like Finn (hopeless with women, but they take his clothes off and he can handle it from there) who, like Finn, is a person (character in Finn's case) who has no subtext. He's remarkably emotionally astute, and from minute one I realized who Finn reminded me of.Was anyone else surprised when Finn picked up on Rachel's misplaced anger?

The "no subtext" thing trips him up endlessly in his relationships, because he can't be manipulated, and girls always try, frustrating them both, because he's genuinely sweet and eager to please, but he can't figure out what is wanted unless they TELL him, and girls and young women his age just won't do that. So I figured Finn's like that too- he's never said a thing on the show that isn't genuine or ingenuous in some way.
When Rachel told him very clearly that he could kiss her, and he responded "I want to.", he was responding in the way that he knew was wanted.
PS- My friend is a metallurgist and can think in applied physics. He's just not good at the nuances, not stupid.

Exactly. Doesn't know what "chivalrous" and "cliche" mean, but is apparently an expert on female psychology.

Me too. When a stiff upper lip, macho-type dude breaks down, he must be REALLY in the dumps.
