Sony Hires Spider-Man 5 & 6 Writer

Sony Pictures has engaged screenwriter James Vanderbilt to write Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6. Production on Spider-Man 4 will begin early next year for a May 6, 2011 release.

Given this news, I thought Spiderman deserved his own thread for discussion. :o)

Jeez. I didn't think they could afford to make that many sequels. Don't things like this gradually become more expensive?

ETA: Not that I'm complaining. Spider-Man is like the perfect superhero, and I loved every film. Yes, even the last one.

I wonder if they'll show time to have passed -- how good would it be if they incorporated some crossovers?

Because there are only so many film-worthy villains they can use before Civil War or the whole Dark Reign thing happening now starts to become appealling.

As bad as SM3 was, I'd like to see more movies. I hate franchises that pretty much die after the third or fourth film. I'd like Raimi to have a chance to make up for Spiderman 3 and see more Spidey villains on screen. Unfortunately, Eddie Brock is dead. And hopefully Sam Raimi will either acknowledge that his Peter/Mary Jane are a dysfunctional couple that might work better as friends or do something to make us want them to get together.

I kind of wish they'd wait ten years and just reboot. I hate Kirsten Dunst as MJ, and as good as SM2 was, I also hate how every villain has to have some kind of connection to Peter Parker.

*grin* I was going to ask that too, but I feel like I've harped enough about the ridiculousness of Spider-Man losing his mask every movie, all the time.

They should bring Harry back to life, cuz James Franco is better at his character than Dunst and Maguire are at theirs- though the latter is a fairly decent Peter Parker, it's just that (imo) he's a crappy Spider-man. Plus, without Franco, there's barely any pretty.

As for the villains, they should totally do the Lizard, as they already introduced Dr. Connors pretty well.

Also, I think every villain has a connection to Spider-man/Peter cuz otherwise there really wouldn't be any reason for them to want to kill him, would there? Also, cuz of the whole sentimental element. IMO, however, the best movie villain was Doc Ock, mostly cuz of the awesomeness of Alfred Molina.

Sure there would. All it would take is some villain trying to rob a bank, steal something, kill someone and Spidey is in his/her way so they want to kill him. Or they could introduce Kraven who has only read about Spiderman but wants to kill him for the glory of the hunt.

I agree. When you're a supervillain, of course you'll want to kill Spider-Man. He's the only super powered hero in the cinematic Spideyverse and once he's gone, you have free reign. Cops were useless against the villains and throwing rocks and bottles is only a minor distraction before one can pumpkin bomb the shit out of the entire crowd.

Another question: how will they tear off his mask this time for the final conflict?

He'll just take it off. He doesn't need a reason.

BWAH! Naturally, they'll need a reason to make Peter break up with Mary Jane again...

Vulturess? Really?

I take it with an extreme grain of salt. Although they'll probably make Uncle Ben an ex-employee of Vulture who stole some secrets or something lame like that.

Well I like John Malcovich for the vulture, its been a while since we had seen him on the screen and Spidey villains are usually top notch actors...

Now the Vulturess. He did had a daughter and since Raimi hates the Black Cat it would be a way for him to have the sexy heroine needed to bring strain to Spidey and MJ relationship (yet again) and get away without BC....I'll wait for more info.

I have no idea actually. I think I never read the reasons for the hate I just know he hates her and doesn't plan to use her on any movies... Wich is a waste, if he has to make up a sexy heroine instead of using an existing one.

Then again he said he didn't really like Venom, and he got overruled by Sony and look how that turned out. Although if that link is true I am not sure why you would give a new villian the name of someone who already exists.

Well then I don't want anyone forcing him to use Black Cat then, I might give a chance to The Vulturess *shudders at the lame name* if the movie turns out good. I just want spidey movies be as good as the second one.

I imagine they don't want an inevitable comparison to Catwoman with Black Cat. But then why even use the Felicia Hardy name, when it means nothing to anyone except fanboys? Which means you're pissing them off for no reason. It's Gwen Stacy all over again. Why bring her into the third movie if Mary Jane is still the one going to be kidnapped? In fact, why does anyone have to be kidnapped?

I was hoping they will be doing the MJ Spiderman wedding on the third movie because really there was no point on more angst and they could at least have one superhero married for a change. But I was so wrong!

My main worry with future Spider-Man movies is how much I felt #2 and #3 felt like shameless rehashes of the first movie. The retcon for Uncle Ben's death in #3 was pointless and stupid, and the burning building in #2 could probably be cut in with the burning building from #1 for an extended sequence.

OTOH, the evil Peter stuff in #3 was new, and it was roundly reviled.

I think he wanted to add some suspense since she dies on the comics you would be really scared every time her life was on danger...It didn't quite worked, IMO.

There wasn't enough time for us to get emotionally attached the Gwen for that to happen. Besides MJ is the one that always gets in peril.

Even better </sarcasm>, the guys who killed Uncle Ben REALLY worked for the Vulture and it was never mentioned that he showed up shortly after the other two at Uncle Ben's car...
