Summary:

Spurned by an exasperated Sookie, Bill ends up winning over Adele's church audience with his vivid recollections from the Civil War, though Andy and Bud remain suspicious. Sam tries to make the most of his opportunity with Sookie, though she's clearly not ready to commit. Ignoring Tara's rebuff, Lafayette convinces Jason to give vampire blood, a.k.a. "V juice," another shot. Alone at home, Bill remembers the painful wartime incident that changed his fate forever.

The character development in this episode was very powerful. Bill's turning and last look at his family were heartbreaking. Lorena sure is a heartless bitch, isn't she? Talk about vipers. There was such a balance between high humor (Lafeyette pulling his earrings off, for example) and pathos. Well done, Alan Ball. Well done.

Oh, Gran. You were so adorable. I miss you already.

So - last week, I was "WTF?!" with Sam....

This week, I was "OMFG!" at the end of this episode! I did NOT see that coming at all!

Loved the flashbacks.

I really like the Iraq war vet who gave Bill a hug after his speech. That was too cool. Have to say that my opinion of Andy has definitely changed. How interesting to show the flip side of things. After last week, when the sheriff was all sympathetic to Jason and now this week, when Andy is all sympathetic to Bill.

Hrm....I was starting to like Sam after last week - although now he's beginning to creep me out again. <sigh>

Ma Ingalls made Bill a vampire?

ROTFL!

Edited because I accidentally posted before I finished typing....Hey, seeing Adele in a pool of blood will do that. :)

NOOO!*sob* Granny!

Also, Tara throwing trash on Jason and the blonde bimbo- very much appropriate.

I miss Bill and Sookie action- I hope we see more next week.

My husband sucked me in to this show and now I am totally invested in these characters. Poor Gran

I like Bill and Sookie but I'm just not sure they should be together. I kind of feel like all of these people should move far far away from each other. Mainly I think Tara should get the hell away from Jason because there is no way he is good enough for her.

Oh Jason, my Jason...you are by far the dumbest person in Bon Temps (and that is saying something...that place most likely has the most stupid per capita in the US) so why do I still care about you and want a happy ending for you? Silly kid...

We laughed through most of the show and were left speechless at the end. Poor Granny. Didn't expect that at all. So I guess our murderer is committing hate crimes against those who "harbor" vampires?

My heart broke for Tara when she saw Jason and the blonde.

I want to dub this the Heartbreak episode. Tara going against her instincts to believe Pathetic Jason, only to be hit in the face by his nasty reality. Sam, poor Sam, finally working up the nerve to ask Sooky on a date, only to have it crash and burn. A look into Vampire Bill's background, where we learn how he was trapped by a seemingly innocent backwoods war widow, and literally stolen from his family. And Grandma.
On the flip side, we get Lafayette handling the Redneck Trio masterfully. And "Animal Planet."
This hour passes much too quickly.

I really like how they showed Bill's vamp background. The scenes with him and the Civil War and afterwards were very moving. I felt so bad for him not being able to go back home.

Aw, Grandma. I hate that you had to go.

Zack from GG was really good here. I liked that as a soldier from Iraq knew exactly what Bill had been through. War is war no matter what century it was in.

I'm so proud of Sookie. Girl stands up for what she believes I really love that.

ETA: Lafayette you continue to be awesome please don't die. I howled out loud when after beating up the rednecks he said "tip your waitress". Oh, I love this character.

This was probably my least favorite ep, but it still had its moments. By far, my favorite was the Fresca scene in Bill's house. Priceless.

I thought Sookie was a tiny bit out of line outside of her house at the beginning of the ep, but then again driving back from Shreveport with throat singing would turn me into a bit of a bitch too. Sam acted like an ass on their date too. I get that he likes her, and I get that he wants to keep her safe from the perceived threat of Bill, but still - dial it back a few notches, Sam.

My heart broke a little bit for Tara tonight. How awfully tempting it must have been for Jason to come on to her, even though she knew he was high on something. But still, she must have wanted terribly to believe him, only to find him outside near the dumpster bins. Loved the garbage toss, though.

Poor Bill. He was the only one other one that I felt truly bad for tonight, even if he was kind of dorkalicious at the Descendants of the Glorious Dead meeting. I felt so bad towards the end that I even forgave him for his music choices at the beginning of the episode.

Oh, and poor Gran. And Sookie slipping in her blood! Horrible.

Wow. I did not see that coming.

I was really enjoying this ep, but that ending just blew my mind. Poor Sookie—Gran was perhaps the only person in the world who really accepted her. I guess this development will put Sookie into the forefront of finding out who this killer really is.

This sucks—I’m really gonna miss seeing Gran, she’s been an amazing part of the show.

Man, this ep had so much going on--I felt like we really got to see some interesting developments in each of the characters.

*Lafayette takes a really sinister turn with this. After the cuteness of the exchange with Tara, it was disturbing to see him pull the super drug dealer moves on Jason.

*Poor Tara--everything she ever wanted to hear from Jason, and knowing how unreliable it was.

*Dearborn and Andy are my new favorite couple.

*Poor human Bill. Was anybody else getting a Hugh Jackman vibe off of him in the whole nightime/cottage/draining scene?

*Unwritten show rule: Sookie will never have a trauma free date.

I love Dearborn and Andy. I like that Dearborn thinks Jason is innocent and Andy thought Bill was innocent.

"I have Frescas", was one of the best sequences and then it was followed by Bill's very sad flashback. Poor Sookie.

Lafayette is a total, unadulterated badass. From the second he started off with the bat "Keep it comin', bitch, I went to Nationals," to talking up V to handing out AIDS burgers, I just loved this character to pieces.

I am sooo happy Jason stayed Jason. I like the dim bulb but I don't want him for Tara. So it was a win for me that she was prevented from falling for his crap anymore that she already has.

Lafayette continues to rule. Watching him take off his earrings, with studied deliberation, before going to confront the redneck was simply priceless.

This show is my new Sunday night crack!

They're teasing again with Sam. We see the dog creepily checking out the supposed break-up between Sookie and Bill. Then Sam conveniently asks Sookie out, thinking she was finally available. Did the dog "tell" Sam? Is that why he blew up during their date, with Sookie pulling back from him because Bill was still there? I do agree, he needs to dial it down a notch. But what the hell is he?

Nice, subtle interplay between the African American and Southern "Heritagists" perception of the Confederate flag at the Glorious Dead meeting.

And yes, I did get a Hugh Jackman vibe off of Bill during the cottage scene, with his pre-vampire, not quite so pasty flush.

ETa: What did Andy "say" about Tara that made Sookie mad? If he insulted her, he just fell off the list.

Totally agree with you, Door.

Alan - don't even *think* of killing off Lafayette's character!!!!

I loved how he took his earrings off before going out to kick the customers' asses....LOL

And I really want more Rene in this show too...heh.

I honestly don't think I have seen a show in a long time where I have really enjoyed the performances of so many characters in the show - usually I get into one or two, but the development of the minor character roles on this show has been just great!

"Animal Planet" - Hee!

So who do you think (if anyone) was "watching" Sookie walk up to the house at the end?

The killer? The dog? Sam? Bill?

I mean - I assume that was the point of the camera filming from behind the leaves/bushes....to give the impression something was watching Sookie? Or am I reading wayyyy too much into that scene?

Too bad Lafayette's gay because I am in love with him. LOL

My favorite soda is Fresca. I don't think I need to tell everyone just how much I squee-ed at the Fresca scene and how sassy Bill was in it.

I kind of spoiled myself in what would happen to Gran, but it still was depressing as all hell, especially when she was so hilariously wonderful at the beginning of the episode on the phone with the woman who told her to "go to hell". ::sigh:: She will be missed...

Jason...you is so dumb. But I enjoy laughing at your antics. Was sort of pissed off at Lafayette for encouraging the V-juice use, but then again...Jason was dumber than hell for doing it again. Even HE knew how stupid it was!

As a Bill+Sookie fan, I LOVED how testy Bill was being to Sam after his presentation. My heart sort of broke for him when he overheard (while waiting in the kitchen) that Sam was on a date with Sookie.

The whole Lorena/Bill sequence made me cringe from...everything. The acting during the more serious bits is wonderful.

I want to dub this the Heartbreak episode.

That pretty much was the theme, wasn't it? Well, heartbreak and dread, for me. Things seemed a little too happy there for a bit with so many town's folk rallying to Bill's side, and Sam sorta getting the girl for a bit even while maybe being a pyscho dog man, and Jason actually looking at Tara finally (if not really seeing her) and Gran being so excited about the meeting while also getting threats... I just couldn't help but feel this mounting dread through the whole episode.

I'm definitely heartbroken over Gran. That last scene was utterly horrific. God, poor Sookie. I don't even know what else to say about that. The Stackhouse kids are already so damaged, I feel awful for them and I'm dreading how they're going to handle this. *wince*

Also, Tara throwing trash on Jason and the blonde bimbo- very much appropriate.

Oh my goodness, yes it was. Before that, it was hard to watch Tara get her hopes up even a little when it comes to Jason because she's so self aware and she damned well knows what he's like. But man, that still had to hurt like motherfucker.

*Lafayette takes a really sinister turn with this. After the cuteness of the exchange with Tara, it was disturbing to see him pull the super drug dealer moves on Jason.

Absolutely. During the whole Tara/Jason story this episode, my thoughts couldn't help but keep going back to Lafayette and why in the world he would push V back on Jason even after seeing how upset Tara was about. In fact, I felt like there was an underlying meanness to Lafayette's decision because of his scene with Tara. I also can't really figure out why he finally spilled the beans about Tara's feelings to Jason. I mean, clearly L and Sookie both have known how she feels for years, but they haven't ever clued in Jason before, out of respect I suppose. So why now suddenly? We could theorize that maybe Lafayette thought the V would finally let Jason open up and connect with Tara, but dang, he knows Jason well too so surely he had to know it wouldn't end with puppies and rainbows for the two of them? His motives seemed darker than that to me tonight. I don't know though. It seems like something else is going on with Lafayette and I have a feeling it's bad. Maybe with his V supplier?

Bill's story was sad. I'm still not really connecting with Bill all that much, but his backstory did at least interest me in him a little more. I hope we see the lady who vamped him in the present. She seems CrAzy. I think she'd make a great recurring villain. Ee! I missed Eric and Pam tonight though.

Is Sam the killer?
A psychopath.
Maybe why Sookie can't read his mind.

She can read his mind though. Remember, she said he just doesn't sound like other people sometimes. Sometimes it's just sounds, or rushing waves or something? Also, in the one epi where he hugged her and basically thought all intensely at her about loving her? He still might be a psycho though. Who knows. Sam creeps me out!

Yanno, the thing with Jason was that...he basically invited Tara into share his most favorite hobby in the world and be part of his thing. That actually came across as a really open and heartfelt and poignant moment for me and I wonder if it was intentional -- but it also underscored why it would never, ever work.

Gran bugged me. I know, unpopular opinion, but I'm fine with her being gone gone gone. I really hate the Sam character too while I'm at it. Hate, loathe, yuck, go.away. Uber-creepy. I could easily see him being a murderer.

Stephen Moyer made me a very happy viewer tonight -- what wonderful acting and characterization.

And Tara, oh how I love her. 'Lalalalalalalalalalala' That damn near required a pause on the DVR just to get done laughing.

And because it needs to be done, I'm going to paddle around in the shallow end for a moment and beg for more Rene. Guh. Moremoremoremoremore please.

And before I forget I must offer up massive kudos to the deities who gifted this show with such an amazing music director -- I've no idea who it is, but the tunes are always utterly perfect.

When can I buy the series on DVD already?

Lafayette! Don't you be a drug pusher, especially on a poor, weak, dumb, defenseless boy like Jason! I'm very disappointed. You made up for it a bit, though, kicking those rednecks' asses. That was awesome. As soon as he took off his earrings, you know it was ON.

Jason's so adorable tripping his tits out. And, OMG, I just want to cuddle with Hoyt Fortenberry! He could do so much better than that skank, anyway. Also, if Rene ever called me "chere" I think I'd melt. Arnette totally doesn't deserve him.

Damn was Bill sexy tonight! When he was describing to Andy and the Sheriff how a vampire would have drunk Maudette and Dawn dry, I almost fainted. His talk was cool, too; he charmed the pants off of them. That bit where Andy's Iraq vet cousin hugged him was actually quite touching. War never changes. All the flashbacks were interesting, of how he was made a vampire.

Oh, Sam. You just go from cute to creepy way too easily.

Adele! You know what I found saddest/most disturbing of all in that scene? Poor Tina crying forlornly.

Poor grandma! I was so caught offguard by that, it was sort of a Buffy/The Body moment for me.

I officially want to marry Lafayette. That was probably the most badass moment off of any show in a long time. It was on as soon as he ook off those earrings (which I totally want BTW). Absolutel love the fact that Lafayette is athletic (think he mentioned going to nationals?). Usually in shows they make the gay characters a complete stereotype. Lafayette rocks the makeup and kick ass at baseball. So much love.

I officially want Jason/Tara to happen. Jason was just really adorable in his interactions with her, even when he was tripping out of his mind. And I really like that Tara was smart enough to know that this was too good to be true. Loved her expression at the Confederate flag too.

Bill's backstory was really interesting to me. I was really touched by the whole meeting, especially by the cop's brother and the old man who asked about his ancestor. The whole crying blood thing was a nice touch also, because vampires wouldn't have any other bodily fluids. At least I think that was what they were going for.

Are we supposed to think it's the Iraq war vet doing it?

I don't know, but I hope not. I've liked him ever since episode 2 when he giggled so hard at Tara's lame joke about Sam hiring her because of affirmative action. And I thought his hug for Bill, and advice to be strong Brother were really moving. I hope it's not him!

I figure there's a vamp hating human out there killing off women who view vamps positively, and my current suspect is the Coroner. He's just way too jolly about picking up the dead.

Yanno, the thing with Jason was that...he basically invited Tara into share his most favorite hobby in the world and be part of his thing. That was actually came across as a really open and heartfelt and poignant moment for me and I wonder if it was intentional -- but it also underscored why it would never, ever work.

Do you mean when Jason was screwing that woman out by the dumpster? Since having sex seems to be his hobby? Can't say I found that scene poignant so much, though I have to admit, if that is the moment you're talking about I was empathizing so hard with Tara at the time that his dialogue sort of went fuzzy on me. All I could compute were - him, dumpster, blonde. It made me so sad for him And Tara.

Rene's Animal Planet line cracked me up though. He really is fantastic.
