Spike Mendelsohn, 27

BIO:

Spike works as the chef de cuisine at Tribeca's new hotspot restaurant, MAi-House, which was named as one of the New York Times' top ten best restaurants. Born in Montreal, Canada and trained in classic French cuisine in restaurants around the world, Spike has worked with Gerard Boyer at Les Crayeres, Thomas Keller at Bouchon and The Maccioni Family at Le Cirque and at Good Stuff Eatery in Washington D.C. Spike believes in learning the basics to become the best. His latest venture is opening a new chain, Good Stuff Eatery, with his family. The new restaurant features his weakness - hamburgers, hot dogs, fries and milkshakes.

I like Spike. I also like his fedoras. He has also worked for some big names, which may bode well for him.

Hi name is Evangelos and he needs to step away from the hats. Markley told us all we need to know about hats last season.

I haven't any idea why, but I'm getting a strong Sam crossed with Marcel vibe from Spike, and at this point it still works for him.

I definitely see a lot of Sam - it's the scary!hot thing for me. The Marcel-ness could come from the slightly cocky attitude I sense w/ Spike.

But he wants to make milkshakes? He may be my Top Chef crush this season.

I really like this guy. He is a bit self-deprecating, which is handy if you're called Spike. Or if your name is Evangelos.
And he's cute, too.

After rewatching the episode, I think this is mostly it, but he does have some of Marcel's mannerisms in the interviews, specifically the habit of leaning back while talking, that reminds me of Marcel.

But since he doesn't look like a potato covered in pubic hair like Sam, and he seems to be more socially accepted than Marcel, it's a good combination so far.

Something about him just seems unclean to me, and I wouldn't want him to touch my food. Maybe it's the beard and hat that icks me out.

I had a nightmare about him after last night's episode. I'm not sure why. He's not quite menacing . . . but he's a little seedy, no?

Yeah I'm definitely getting a slightly less competent Sam vibe from him. Sam played mind games with everyone though, while Spike seems a little too lazy to be bothered with that.

Spike reminds me of a gay porn star. Not good looking at all, but sexy as hell. Something about his attitude, mmmm. Very doable!

I don't think he looks seedy at all. He's too clean and well put together in his dishevelledness. Even his beard is so neatly cultivated. I could do without the hats, though, and he may want to look into pants that don't overemphasize the fact that he has no ass to hold them up, because those jeans he wore to the farmers market made him look concave.

Hee! Thanks a lot, vallegirl...now I'm gonna have to be looking for his less than there ass rather than his food. *mutter*I must be getting old...I never notice that stuff any more.*/mutter* ;)

I really haven't formed an opinion about Spike yet. I will say (carryover from PR and Ricky hat hate) he could lose those hats at any time and I would be pleased.

And I'm digging the hats, specifically the fedoras. He could lose the baseball cap (or whatever that basketweave contraption was on his one baseball cap), though. Sadly, his QF (with the tenderloin tips), didn't look all that appetizing. He needs to start stepping it up.

Spike has failed to make an imprint sofar with his food, but he is seen an AWFUL lot in the seasonal previews. Maybe he's the Ricky of the season in more ways than just the hats.

Hats aside, I doubt Spike is the "Ricky" of TC. More like the Dale or Casey from last season. In the episode thread I mentioned that his food for the most part has been reasonably good. His pizza was in the winning group, his eggs benedict was highly praised but barely lost due to Lisa's slightly better poached egg so he performed better on the EC last week than at least two of the winning dishes (the souffle and the duck a l'orange) and all of the other losing dishes, and while his QF dish was a failure this week, there was no indication that his salmon wasn't a good dish, it was just on one of the losing teams.

Casey and Dale both got a lot more coverage than their cooking seemed to warrant in the early episodes, but both were firmly established by mid-season. Spike isn't performing poorly on most challenges, he's just not winning. If he starts finding himself in the bottom of every EC, but manages to sneak past other seemingly "better" chefs, then I'll call him the "Ricky." Right now, he's certainly in the top half of the chefs based upon performance.

The "Ricky" term was just a friendly rag. I know he's actually pretty skilled, he just doesn't seem to have his heart in it yet.

I don't think it's so much that his heart isn't in it as much as, like Hung, he doesn't put as much value on the QF challenges. But where Hung saw them as his chance to go batshit crazy and make things like the Smurf village or his savory ice cream (was it cauliflower?), Spike's just focusing his energy on the ECs and if his QF dish fails, whatever.

It's a better approach than Mark's psycho panic at the Green City Market.

Spike and Andrew get a little flirty over what Spike calls Andrew's "icicles" -- they should totally make out, and I'll watch.

Yes, please! I'm not normally a fan of redheads, but I'll admit I have a weakness for crazy eyes.

I was just about to post the exact same thing!

Even better, I couldn't tell the two apart in the first episode, so I got shades of gay twin porn when I read that. Inappropriate? A little bit, but then again, between Spike's predisposition towards molesting produce and Andrew's desire for someone "to taste his passion", I can't say this is completely a product of my own gutter-mindedness.

I'm still hating him. His "shmoozing" at the block party came off as desperate, and his backtalk to the judges was pathetic. I get douche chills every time he speaks.

Wow, after the block party episode, he is clearly nowhere near as classy as Sam. And considering that was a guy that made vague cheating allegations to save his ass and nearly incited Frank to beat Marcel to a pulp, that's really saying something.

He's Michael Midgely trying to pass himself off as Sam, so we have either a pretentious Mikey or a Sam without the skills. The worse of both worlds.

I think he seems like a complete douchebag most of the time (a hot douchebag, but still a douchebag) so I am pretty much convinced that he'll be in the final 4. Top Chef always has an asshole in the final 4.

I do find him to be legitimately entertaining sometimes, though.

I wasn't too impressed by a couple of things he's made over the past few episodes (with the exception of his pizza a la grec), but his QF dish this past episode and his dish for the block party are two dishes that I can get behind. If I liked fish, I'd probably want to try the salmon dish he made for the team challenge, but I don't (like fish), so there you are.

And I don't know what it says about me, but I do find him to be hot (attitude and all).

Total douche. There is way too much testosterone to go around this season. All the chest-thumping theatrics coming from Spike, but also Ryan and Andrew, are making me lose my appetite.

I didn't think he was desperate at the block party. He was having fun after the challenge was, for all intents and purposes, over.

I still like him. He's having a good time, he's cooking decent enough food, and he has personality. I didn't think he was a douchebag at all. And he didn't even sabotage the other team because, as he pointed out, he'd already been to that house. Even if he left "plenty of food" there's no reason to believe the family would share it. Plus, the other team could have said "Hmmm, maybe since Spike's on the other team he's not being entirely honest."

But other than his dumbass insistence that tacos aren't "fine dining" he was willing to (ultimately foolishly) defend his decisions, which is something the judges demand of the chefs. Right or wrong, don't be wishy washy.

In a sea of Richards and Jennifers, I'd rather have someone with a little bite to him. Because the most personality those two have shown is in their fauxhawks. Spike may annoy and act a fool on occasion, but at least he's willing to entertain me.

I think he's kind of cute because he reminds me a little bit of John Frusciante, but I am not enjoying his attitude (he knows he's cute), his condescension and his wearing a hat indoors. Douchebag.
