I am starting a thread about Mad Men(hopefully) being on dvd. Has anyone heard anything about a dvd release? I have checked amazon and not seen anything. I am hoping that the show will be out on dvd and have lots of extras.

If anyone has better thread names feel free to post them.

My guess is they would not rush the DVD - Lost Season 3 is not coming out until mid December - perfect timing for holidays and also for early 2008 start of Season 4.

Seems like Mad Men has got good "deal" with iTunes - new economy and all. For example, music can be rush released on iTunes and not avaialble on CD via Amazon.

Also, is there a market share for DVD release? Crossing Jordan has never been released on DVD, in part due to issue with music licensing hassles, I read somewhere.

I want a whole 20 minutes of DVD extras dedicated to Joan doing the Twist - all the Twist out takes.....what do others want????

If the DVD were released by Christmas (cough, cough), I would be able to give the complete season as gifts to friends, and have a better shot at converting them than having to refer them to capricious OnDemand listings.
My "extras" wishlist:
- More interviews with cast, including those in smaller roles like the junior execs
- Insight on the casting process (audition tapes!)
- Interviews with the costume designers, and displays of fashions
- Shooting scripts
And of course, commentaries with producers, directors, writers, and lead actors!

Also, is there a market share for DVD release? Crossing Jordan has never been released on DVD, in part due to issue with music licensing hassles, I read somewhere.

Ugh, music licensing... that's why I've been waiting almost 20 years for China Beach... >:S

I'd like a resource or reference list (a bibliography maybe?)--you know, all the literary, pop culture, music and movie references that inform the series.

Oh, erm...domenica marie's suggestion is good too. ;-)

Wasn't there a making of Mad Men on AMC before the show started airing? It would be nice if that was included.

I'm with domenica marie!

The Making of Mad Men didn't do much for me - lots of head shots of the actors saying vacuous, obvious shit like "In the 60s, people drank much more than they do now." "Life was very different for women then." Thank you January Jones, PhD! Don't get me wrong, I love the cast, but so far they don't interview that well.

It's obvious, though, that MW did some serious research on the era - I'd like some insight into that and interviews with some of his sources.

I saw an entertainment reporter on MSNBC this a.m. talking about how expensive it is to make Mad Men and that Lion's Gate was probably counting on the extras, like DVD sales, to help defray their investment. Makes sense.

That's great news, bridge.

Shall we send Mr. Weiner our demands, I mean suggestions, for dvd extras?

The dvd set probably won't come out till just before season 2 starts. Most TV shows plan the dvd release that way.

I definitely want any and all deleted scenes involving Don and Rachel.

Question - is anyone else unable to record the show onto DVD or VHS? Is this program copy protected? I've been trying in vain for the last few weeks and all I am able to capture from my DVR/VCR are a few seconds and then it stops. No biggie, I'm downloading from iTunes until the DVD set comes out, but I've never come across this other than feature films being protected.

dm, I've recorded a few episodes on my 19th-century-technology VCR and haven't had a problem. Maybe it's your machine? I'll also admit that I have screwed up by setting record times at something like 9:59 to 10:01 instead of 9:59 to 11:01. But then, I'm an idiot.

I've gotten out of the habit of buying shows on DVD and have even sold off several that I used to own (yeah, Gilmore Girls, I'm lookin' at you), but this is one show-on-DVD that I will buy and keep.

Don't DVD release dates also have to do with how many times the episodes are aired, syndication agreements, etc.?

I've been able to get all of the episodes off the internet (used to convert friends), so someone is able to rip them off a DVR. Of course, I also buy off iTunes, but that huge delay a few episodes back really soured me... can't wait until the official DVD comes out!

Must be me then. I've even had my teenage daughter watch me set the timer cos I thought I was entering the wrong time too, but no. I'm able to record other shows just fine and without any confusion. Ugh.

I haven't bought a DVD set since S5 of GG (and you know why lol), but I'll be buying this one first day of release.....which I read was going to be in a few months.

I've been able to record all episodes on my DVD recorder and have them all burned to discs for repeat viewings. I've never heard of copyright protection preventing people from recording something on TV for later viewing.

-I hope they concentrating on more characters than Don
-commentaries to ALL episodes!
-BLOOPERS! This is a must. A LOT of them!
-Interviews
-Wrap parties
-Behind the scenes
-Outtakes(scenes that didn´t make it to viewing)
-Readings or what´s it called. When the actors come in and read for the roles.
-A SHORT historylesson and offcourse-the set. It bore me but I guess it´s interesting for others.
-I want to see a LOT about the actors.
-Castbiographies
-subtexts on everything, even the extra-material.

It's out there. "Saving Grace" for example. Quite a few newer movies I've tried to record to disc ended up with the telltale "fullscreen/widescreen" jitters. Also, I've tried videotaping and then transferring THAT to disc but the copy protection screws that up too.

I'm looking forward to these DVDs. I haven't seen the whole season but love what I did catch.

Basket of Kisses has announced that the Season 1 DVDs will be released July 1, 2008. No confirmation in any other media, but the bloggers do have some access to Weiner and co. judging by some of their blog entries.

TVshowsondvd.com has confirmed a July 1st release date for DVD and Blue-Ray. Don't worry--the website promised no April Fools jokes. The announcement is scanty on extras, but it did say that the boxset case will be like a lighter and that the release will coincide with the 2nd season premiere and the release of a soundtrack.

They've added the artwork for the packaging. Is it a little hypocritical that it uses a smoking-chic advertising gimmick or just fitting irony? The latter, I'm sure, but I do find it a little weird.

needsleep05: Not only does every single episode have a commentary track, the overwhelming majority of them have two. I'm posting from work and don't have the list in front of me, but there are 23 or 24 commentary tracks in total.

Between the commentaries and the other extras on the Blu-ray set, there are seriously around 35 hours of material in total.

Holy hell, Adam Tyner! It's like you were reading my mind.

I just read this review of the S1 dvd from DVD Talk and noticed that the reviewer mentioned multiple commentaries for single episodes and I came over here to ask about them.

Considering Amazon is still selling the regular and blu-ray DVDs for just under $32 this has to be one of the biggest "bang for your buck" DVD sets I've come across.

I'm slightly ashamed of how excited I am to get Season 1 in the mail. Slightly.

Coincidentally, I'm also reviewing Mad Men for DVD Talk, although I'm handling the Blu-ray version. It's definitely a challenge trying to watch an entire season of a show, a couple hours of video-based extras, and a couple dozen audio commentaries with a 5 day deadline and a full-time job :), but at least this show deserves the effort.

Here's a list of participants per commentary. Just a quick note that I jotted these names down quickly and didn't proofread, so if I made any glaring spelling errors, don't be too miffed. Also, several of the commentaries that look like they have multiple speakers were recorded separately and pieced together. They weren't actually in the same room at the same time.

EPISODE 1: SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYE

1) Matt Weiner
2) Alan Taylor

EPISODE 2: LADIES ROOM

1) January Jones and Rosemarie Dewitt
2) Michael Gladis and Elisabeth Moss

EPISODE 3: MARRIAGE OF FIGARO

1) Jon Hamm, Maggie Siff, and Darby Stanchfield

EPISODE 4: NEW AMSTERDAM

1) Vincent Kartheiser, Allison Brie, and Lisa Albert

EPISODE 5: 5G

1) Jonn Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, and Aaron Staton

2) Lesli Linka Glatter

EPISODE 6: BABYLON

1) Christina Hendricks and Maria/Andre Jacquemetton

2) Andrew Bernstein

EPISODE 7: RED IN THE FACE

1) January Jones, John Slattery, Jon Hamm, and Vincent Kartheiser

2) Tim Hunter

EPISODE 8: THE HOBO CODE

1) Vincent Kartheiser, Elisabeth Moss, and Bryan Batt

2) Phil Abraham

EPISODE 9: SHOOT

1) Jane Bryant and Matt Weiner

2) Dan Bishop

EPISODE 10: THE LONG WEEKEND

1) Christina Hendricks and Matt Weiner

2) Tim Hunter and David Carbonara

EPISODE 11: INDIAN SUMMER

1) Elisabeth Moss and Matt Weiner

EPISODE 12: NIXON VS. KENNEDY

1) Jon Hamm, Vincent Kartheiser, and Rich Sommer

2) Alan Taylor and Matt Weiner

EPISODE 13: THE WHEEL

1) Jon Hamm, January Jones, and Elisabeth Moss

2) Matt Weiner, Robin Veith, and Malcolm Jamieson

Wow. Now I feel like Fry on Futurama after he found out is bank account was worth billions of dollars. *hyperventilates, collapses.*

I had pre-ordered a DVD on Amazon that got released this week and I didn't get it until today. If I was agitated over that (because arriving on the estimated arrival date is too late for me!), I am going to be absolutely bonkers waiting for this. I read a review where the guy particularly liked the commentary with Jon Hamm and John Slattery together, they have some very in depth details of what happened behind the scenes.
