I thought that this may be a good thread for posing questions to our posters who know so much about the show!

Please remember that forum rules still apply to this thread - i.e. Be respectful of other posters. And it is possible that not all questions will be answerable. Thanks.

Thank you. :) I was thinking last night that we needed to start a thread such as this.

Answering a question asked on the Trust Metric thread:

No, my hair was not done by the special hair guy Tony Scott brought in. He was long gone by the time that photo was taken.

I assume the photo you're referring to was from the ATAS screening.

Our regular hair guy did that. He puts in hot rollers. He waits a while, then he takes them out. And that's it.

Though it's way more than I am capable of doing on my own.

His name is Ron Scott and he's a wonderful guy.

In the online preview for Trust Metric I was totally sure I saw the actor Chris Bauer who played Frank Sobatka on the Wire. And then he wasn't in the show. Did I imagine him in the preview? Or am I just hallucinating more Wire cast members on Numb3rs?

Cheuton, I apologize in advance for what may be a stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway.

With all of this talk about Tony Scott directing the premiere, why does Numb3rs need him and Ridley?

I don't mean that in a flip way. What does he do (other than direct the season opener of S4)?

You and PvsNP= creators of Numb3rs who also write and executive produce the show.

CBS= Network that broadcasts the show.

Paramount= Company that produces the show.

Tony and Ridley Scott=???

That preview included footage from three episodes. A lot of it was from Velocity, which will be aired Oct. 12.

And, Chris Bauer is indeed a guest star in that episode. He did a fabulous job for us.

Tony and Ridley Scott have been vital to the show. We wouldn't be on the air without them.

Early on, a lot of people were uncomfortable with the idea of a show that combined crime solving and math. They didn't see how we'd fit the college world with the FBI world. Some argued, strongly, that Charlie quit his teaching job and become a full-time FBI tech. One person suggested we drop the math angle altogether and just do an FBI show.

We were told we should drop the Alan and Larry characters. How would they ever fit into crime solving? Some people said that viewers wouldn't want to watch scenes that weren't focused on the crime.

Ridley disagreed. Ridley thought the character of Charlie, in interaction with his brother, was the heart of the show. Ridley loved Peter MacNicol's work. He loved the family interaction. He thought there was no show without the math.

We shot the pilot twice. The first one didn't come out well, for a variety of reasons. But Tony took it and re-edited it, added visuals and much more, and showed the network what the show could be. That's how we got a second chance at it. You can see the story of that on the Season One DVD.

Tony and Ridley both are constantly in touch about the look of the show. The editing, the set design, the work of the DPs. They bring us directors that they know from their work, people who are new to TV, but gifted. One is Chris Hartwell, who directed the episode in Season 3 when Larry leaves to go off into space. Chris just finished directing another one for us (Episode 407, "Primacy").

Ridley and Tony aren't afraid of anything, and they have nothing to prove to anybody. That makes them fearless. And we needed that at the beginning.

Look I think Ken Sanzel is fantastic. His episodes never dissappoint. He has the amazing talent as a writer to be able to turn predictable or typical scenarios into fresh and believable scenes. Obviously he's helped tremendously by everyone else in the team's roles, but his writing still stands out to me. How did the decision to make him showrunner come about and how the hell did he get so good at writing? And, I guess, why did he spend so many years as a cop if this little gift was simmering under the surface?

Thanks CHeuton. Glad to know I'm not hallucinating. And that Numb3rs brings such talented people to the major networks.
