I love this show for Don and the Eppes dynamic and the crime solving, but I have to say, the "Is Colby a spy?" storyline is something that got to almost more than anything else that has ever been on the show. I don't know that I've ever watched a show and had a character that I enjoyed for two seasons suddenly become evil (or possibly evil, who knows what the season premiere this Friday will reveal). I was even thinking I might lose interest in the show over this storyline, but now that TWoP has added the show as a fully covered show on their site, I think I'm pretty much hooked for a long time to come regardless of how the Colby thing turns out.

I entirely agree, Zoned Out (hi, btw!). That was probably the most shocking season finale I saw last year, which I really wasn't expecting from this show. Not that I don't love it, but it was just so... unexpected. I really grew to like Colby quite a lot, and I'm very excited to see what happens with him.

That was probably the most shocking season finale I saw last year, which I really wasn't expecting from this show.

I really didn't expect it coming either. I didn't even see it coming within the episode itself. The first time I watched the episode the last few minutes were this weird mixture for me of clarity and fuzziness because I was in complete shock once Colby's name was read off.

A lot is riding on this Friday's premiere. It could go stupendously and I will end up applauding this storyline as a way of getting the show to really grow and evolve instead of just tread water in the ground they've already broken (and wow, sorry if I'm mixing my metaphors there). Or, it could go badly and I will be sad for the demise of a show I once loved.

But regardless of what the season four premiere holds, I will give the show credit for giving me (and obviously a lot of others) a very compelling, shocking season finale that was more memorable (in a (mostly) good way) than many other shows I've watched not just this year, but of all time in regards to my personal television viewing experience.

I agree that the season finale was well-done if it got me going "WHAT?! NO!"

It's ironic that I was so upset because I didn't even like Colby at first. I was generally thinking "meh" about his character, but he grew on me quickly, and now, I have to say that having him revealed as a spy is just... unexpected (although that doesn't give it justice).

I was really shocked by the Colby-is-a-spy reveal too - I both didn't see it coming, and didn't want to believe it afterwards. I feel kind of negatively about the finale, though, because it seemed like a big retcon that came out of nowhere just for shock value. I didn't want to watch reruns afterwards because I was afraid that either the retconning would be glaringly obvious, or it would turn out that there really were clues that Colby was a spy, in which case I would be in denial. I think about all the times Colby has put his life on the line, run around carrying heavy bags, been kind to children, or made an affectionate joke about Charlie, and I just can't believe he was playing them the whole time. And yes, there could be a double-agent/deep undercover explanation for this, but it would need to be believable and I worry that it won't be.

I would love for there to be a brilliant resolution to all this, though. As Zoned Out said, a lot is riding on Friday's premiere.

Meanwhile, two of my favorite Colby/David exchanges will always be:
"We're the only white guys in here." "Yes. We are."
"Why do they always run?" "We're wearing suits. They always think they can outrun a guy in a suit."

One of the things I actually love most about scenes with Colby and David running is that they continually make quips about it.

I think I'm going to have to rationalize the hell out of it, actually. I am choosing to believe that he had, like, a sickly girlfriend who had no insurance, and the only way he could pay for her life-saving treatment was by becoming a spy for the Chinese. But then she died before he got paid for his first assignment! And then he wanted to get out, but he couldn't, because by that time he'd already compromised himself too much! So he kept feeding them secrets, but tried to only feed them the unimportant ones!

Basically, I have turned him into Severus Snape. (Just in case.)

HA!

I think a lot of that affection he felt for everyone was real, and he rationalized it by reminding himself that it was just a job. Yes, he was lying to them, but he didn't want to. I also imagine that he just tried to avoid thinking about what would happen when/if it all came out.

That's my fanwank, anyway.

What, no discussion of the main man from the premiere?

I'm so glad it turned out that Colby wasn't a traitor, although realistically this was the only outcome that could keep him on the show. I'm looking forward to seeing how TPTB deal with the aftermath. Colby will not only have to deal with earning back the trust of his colleagues, but he could also have issues with nearly dying, not to mention his five week stint in jail. Hopefully TPTB won't just put everything back to normal in ep 2.

Oh, they couldn't just put everything back to normal! (could they?) Yeah, I'm really interested to see what the real Colby will be like.

Having been a triple-agent will have eroded his teammate's ability to trust him. I liked the scene where Charlie points out that even if they don't know whether they can trust him they can figure out whether they trust their own instincts.

Since the central relationships in the show are based on friendship I'm glad to see Colby moving toward being Charlie's friend.
