Hi, everyone. I'll be moderating this forum. I just wanted to introduce myself and give you all a place to ask questions.

Here's some general stuff I had to post in other forums after a while. I'm posting it here ahead of time, just in case people are new to the site and unclear about how things work at TWoP. I hope it helps.

NOTES and WARNINGS

Notes are just used to bring your attention to rules and guidelines. Notes are not warnings. They are issued to help you avoid warnings, while gently clue-sticking you about the rules.

Warnings are to be taken seriously, because you get one when you break the rules, but they're not the end of the world.

SPOILERS and SPECULATION

Please familiarize yourself with the FAQ and the TWoP's spoiler definition and rules.

Generally speaking, first party promotional materials are not spoilers on TWoP. If you want to speculate based on what's happened in the episodes, media mentions, and promos, please use the speculation thread.

If you are not sure whether or something is a spoiler, please ask before posting it.

When you're posting in the spoiler thread, please don't use spoiler tags.

Don't talk about the BOARDS on the BOARDS

Please read all the FAQ entries on manners and respect, including the Boards on Boards answer to understand this rule against discussing the board on the boards.

Please understand that generalizations such as, "Everyone but me..." and "I don't get the hate/love," and "Why does everyone think..." and "People are just jealous because..." are considered boards on boards violations, site-wide. You can get your points across without them.

One way to do so while avoiding boards-on-boards violations is to respond to specific comments, rather than announcing what you perceive to be the general temperature of the thread. Focus on the post, not the poster, when you're responding to comments.

BOARDS on BOARDS in the Mod thread
  • You may talk about the boards in the Ask the Mod thread, in that you may ask questions, or give feedback
  • You may not disregard TWoP-wide policy regarding manners and respect while doing so
  • Generalizations (such as and similar to the ones in the previous section above) are not allowed in the Mod thread (or anywhere else on TWoP)

RECAP DISCUSSION ETIQUETTE

Please respond to recaps the way you respond to other posters -- abiding by the same rules. Disagree all you want, just please be polite in the doing. Please do not post things about (or to) the recapper that you would not be allowed to say to another member, because the recappers are also members. And along the same lines, if you can't say it about a post, you can't say it about a recap.

I hope this gives you enough leeway to express disagreement when necessary, and I hope that you understand that you do not have license to bash TWoP staff on TWoP forums. Responses to the recaps can be a great jumping-off point for conversations that really are about the show, and not the quality of the recap. I want to allow for that, without giving you all the false impression that it's open season on the recappers.

That all sort of reads cranky to me now, but I originally wrote it for another forum, so any crank is not directed here. In addition to the Ask the Mod thread, or you can contact me via PM.

Barnes, is there any decision on who our recapper will be?

(You aren't talkin' about breaking up the Awesomes, are you? 'Cause that's not cool.)

I don't know who the recappers will be. The wait is driving me a little crazy. You think the mods would get recapper spoilers, but no.

I won't break up anyone (but Willow & Doogie would have been perfect together).

Hi, I'm not really sure where else to pose this general question:

Why doesn't the "quote" option show up under each post for me? I'm forced to do it the long way.

Sorry about the misplaced question.

Despite what the Help files indicate, TWoP hasn't enabled the feature that lets us click a quote button on a post (in hopes that it will cut down on those over-nested quotes). If you want to quote someone, here's how to do so when using "Add Reply":
  • Copy the text you want to quote
  • Hit the "add reply" button at the bottom of the page
  • Click the little quote button above your posting box (it looks like a comic strip speech balloon).
  • This will insert the tags for quoting <quote></quote> (only you'll see square brackets like this: [][/], rather than pointy ones).
  • Paste the text you copied between those two tags, so the section of your post in which you're quoting someone else will look like this:
<quote>Why doesn't the "quote" option show up under each post for me? I'm forced to do it the long way.</quote>

(Except the brackets will be square, and) the end result will look like this:

Why doesn't the "quote" option show up under each post for me? I'm forced to do it the long way.

Here's how to quote using "Fast Reply":
  • Select the text you want to quote
  • Scroll down to the fast reply textbox, and click the "Add selected text as quote" button (which should pop up whenever you select text on the page).
OR

Type <quote> and </quote> (but with square brackets rather than pointy ones) at the start and end, respectively, of what the text you want to quote in your reply.

I hope this helps, but if I'm making as little sense as I fear, check out this section of the TWoP FAQ. It explains how to use all the coding functions at TWoP.

You can put it in Media thread, unless you think it really spoils the plot (see the spoiler definitions in our FAQ), in which case, stick it in the spoiler thread. Also, please make sure you read the FAQ and the Do & Don't list before. You need to use standard capitalization if you're going to post here.

Hey Barnes, do you or perhaps Cindy know if TWOP will be revisiting the idea of recapping the first two seasons? Its not too big an issue, but I was just curious.

I can't find the email, but when they offered me the opportunity to cover the show, I'm pretty sure there was something about there being no plans to backfill old episodes, which I can understand. Recaps of new episodes of a current show are going to attract more readers than old episode recaps.

You could always write to the editorial staff and ask them, though. The e-mail is listed here.

Ahh, thanks for the info Cindy! I was just thinking that since there were only 2 seasons(minus one episode) to deal with, it'd get the backfill.

I'll ask 'em just to be clear though.

Let us know if they reply to you, RandomNation. I'd be curious for their answer, because I would really love to read Cindy's take on many of those funny early episodes, like The Pineapple Incident or Slutty Pumpkin or when Lily and Barney played 'house' for a few days.

Oh, whoops! Completely forgot about responding. Unfortunately, they said they don't have any current plans to go back and recap the first two.

NOTE: I cleaned up the mod thread (culled out old questions and answers that are no longer relevant); deleted the announcement thread; and moved the announcements to the first post here. This is a nice, easy forum. We don't need two threads of administrivia, so I'm also renaming this thread.

I tweaked the name of Lily's Abused Credit Cards: The Fashion Thread, to make it clear that show-related hair and makeup conversation is welcome there, too. It's now called: HIMYM Fashion, Hair, And Makeup: Lily's Abused Credit Cards.

Is there a "Through the Seasons" thread? I'd like to talk about the show as a whole and how I feel it progressed through the seasons, but I can't find an appropriate thread

There is now (and for a moment there were two; darn my itchy trigger finger). I can't believe we didn't have one before.

So, the barneyrobin community over on Livejournal is doing a "feminist reading of HIMYM" discussion post, and I think a number of TWOPers would enjoy the general gabbery and tone of the discussion. Where would you feel this would be best linked?

I'm sorry it took me so long to see this. You can either link it in the BroTP thread, down in the character sub-forum, or in the Gender and Ethnicity thread, in the General Gabbery forum.

I'm not a real hard-ass about topic. If you make a choice and I'd rather it be somewhere else, I'll just move it. I'm not going to blow up your house or anything. Probably.

Just to confirm...Cindy McLennan has decided to stop covering HIMYM. DeAnn Welker, who covered "The Wedding Bride" is our new weecapper. Welcome, Deann!

Sorry about that. I had trouble the first few times I tried to unpin the old and pin the new, and then I must have messed them up. Thanks for pointing that out.

Any way we can change the graphic at the top of the recaps? The current one is...awkward...it makes it slightly NSFW read the recaps :(

BRANDED. Sorry, thank you. I've had quite a week. I'm sorry for that. I forgot the show was even on this past week. Thanks to Random Nation for creating the thread.

Anatareus, you would want to write to the Editorial Team about that.

I don't think they have a recapper for it. It looks like editorial is just writing the recaplets. You can email and ask the at this address: TWoPeditorial@nbcuni.com
