It's already been said a thousand times, but I'll say it again because it's true: Courtney 2 needs to be voted off the island. She gives roller derby girls a bad name.

So far I kind of like Jessica, especially compared to the other two plastic sorority types in the tribe. The chicken thing seemed like a definite accident, and she really didn't behave in a way I found objectionable. Yet.

I'm thrilled there is an "alternative option". I liked Angie and I think it's nice for there is a sort of down to Earth, non-conformist, around. But yes, she should remember what's under boxes in the future.

My strange pre-show attraction to her is ebbing after just one episode. She's not Angie; she's Courtney. The only real difference is that while Courtney was such a poseur that every stupid thing she said or did was of the paint-by-numbers variety, because EVERYTHING Courtney said or did was paint-by-numbers, Jessica is more spontaneous. Which means she won't perform rituals about the escaped chickens, but she will be stupid enough not to say: "Hey, maybe if this upside down box is the only thing keeping them in place, I shouldn't pick it up to look underneath."
Although, that said, who the FUCK thought that the way to keep chickens is to throw an upside down box over them? Were they going to feed them? If so, did they expect the chickens to find the food by sonar? You've got two chickens, and a lot of other work to do besides chicken care. Jessica probably did the tribe a favor. The chickens will stay more edible if they're able to forage for food than they would under a dark box. And she certainly did the chickens a favor.
What is the deal with white people being tainted by interaction with chickens this season, anyway? They've turned one into the official inter-tribe villain, another into village idiot... I need to segue before the jokes about evil anti-white chickenfoot mojo start.
Well, not hard to find other rant fodder, actually... how does someone who goes around telling people "Call me Flicka" not even have any desire to view the original source material? You've got to admire the level of dim that can make saying "Call me Flicka!" even stupider. Hope she lasts a while. Sure, she's an idiot, but she's an entertaining idiot who will drive the other contestants stark raving bugshit.

I think it is interesting, in a season full of possible stereotypes, many of my friends as well as other people are so quick to label her as another Courtney. Sure they have a strikingly similar resemblance and background, but we really have very little to go on at this point as far as her personality goes. Yes she brought with her the world's fugliest hat. Yes, she made a mistake in letting the chickens loose. Until she refers to herself as "hollywood gangsta" (? I think this was the term Courtney refered to herself as in one episode?), a Courtney she will not be. I want to like her, but I'm not sure if I will.

Eh. She didn't bother me, but she didn't move me, either. I reserve all judgment on her. For now, that is.

I haven't seen last season, so I went to CBS's website and looked at the picture of Courtney. I can definitely see why several people were comparing Flicka to her, based on what I saw of Courtney's appearance. Someone said in another thread that Flicka could be the love child of Courtney and Angie. I think that's a great assessment in terms of appearance. The big difference that I see between Flicka and Angie, is that while Angie was whiny in her interviews, she kicked butt in challenges, and Flicka doesn't give me the impression of being that strong. She was in the water while the rest of her tribe was on the raft and it probably took some strength to hang on, but I'm not convinced yet, because I couldn't see if she was kicking or if she was just hanging on and letting the raft pull her. It may take a one-on-one challenge like Angie did so well in or seeing Flicka work her tail off around camp to convince me that she's as strong as Angie.

The chicken thing seemed like a definite accident

I agree that it was completely unintentional, and it cracked me up.

Could you get this off my head?

With the exception of All-Stars, I haven't really seen this show since the one with Boston Rob and Kathy, so I'm not familiar with Angie or Courtney... but between "Look, I'm alternative!" and "I'm far too quirky and non-conformist for my common name, so can you please address me by this name I made up?" she reminded me a lot of Nakomis from Big Brother.

Is Jessica/Flicka a waitress at Sonic Burger? What the hell is a Roller Girl?

Roller derby girl. Jessica is in the Nor Cal Rollergirls, a captain of the Voo Doo Dolls. Flica is her derby name.

I certainly hope she's got some self-awareness about her, since the roller girl is off to a fantastic start, only slower than the chickens.

No, you aren't. I said the same thing to a few buddies when we had our "Survivor draft" ths other day. The huge-ass tattoo can go, that's for sure...AND the Courtney (or Sideshow Bob, if you prefer) hair can go as well...but her face really ISN'T that bad. Honestly.

Seems she's another one who hasn't learned the number one rule of being alternative: if you actually call yourself alternative, you're not. Aaron and Aarianne learned that the hard way.

My impression was that when she was behind the boat she was kicking to add power. There probably wasn't enough room in the boat for everyone to get a good rowing position, so they used Flicka as a rudder. That actually seemed like a good idea, as long as she wasn't in charge of actually navigating. Anyone who gets outsmarted by chickens and then yells at themself in third person as "Flicka" should probably not be put in charge of anything mentally strenuous. As long as they just use her a rudder or beast of burden or large paperweight I think she'll be okay.

The question is whether she takes herself too seriously (i.e. Courtney) and/or expresses pretentious new age ideas (i.e. Courtney). So far, she seems interesting and slightly amusing. And I can't help but think she's cute with her hair and tattoos and such. But that's me. I thought Courtney was the most attractive at first also.

Courtney had a pretentiousness to her that Flicka doesn't. Flicka probably does believe in a lot of the same newage that Courtney does, but she's not standing on a soapbox yelling, "Hey, everybody! Look how enlightened I am!" Flicka may well have the same beliefs about, for example, turtles being omens that Courtney has, but if so I suspect she believes it with the same confused glee with which she regards Santa Claus. Courtney was a mental child determined to present herself as an intelligent adult. Flicka is a metal child who regards life as one big fun candy store. So while their images are similar, their motivations are quite different. Instead of "Look at my tattoos. Aren't you impressed that I have them?" it seems Flicka is more "Tattoos are cool! I'm gonna get some more! Wheeeeee!"

I really hope she lasts long enough to bond with one of the older women, just so she can ask "Are you my Mom?"

OK, I've got to ask. Everyone seems so upset/horrified/amused by her nickname Flicka, why is that?

In my language "flicka" is the word for girl, so while it's a bit wierd to hear a woman name herself Girl it's not exactly offensive. I tried googling (how do you spell that? Googleing?) it as someone in the episode thread wished "Flicka" herself had done before using that name, but now I just find links to Survivor and some new horse movie. No serial killers, no porn stars, and as far as I know it's not a word with any meaning in the English language, so what's the deal?

Please explain to a poor foreigner who doesn't get the joke... (Although watching people order her around while addressing her as Little Girl might be kind of funny, who knows =)

If the box is the only place they have to put the chickens while they build a shelter, and the choice is building a chicken coop or a shelter to sleep in.... the chickens are going in the box for a few hours, sorry.

Remember how whoever Flicka was talking said, "My Friend Flicka?" That was the name of a children's book (1941), a movie (1943), and a television show (1955-1956). Flicka was the name of a horse.

It's considered pretentious for her to go around insisting on being called by something other than her given name merely as a way of showing off how "alternative" she is. It was one of the things that so grated about Nakomis on Big Brother, and for most of us, it's somewhat alienating.

In my opinion, if you constantly have to announce to the world that you're unique, odds are that you really aren't, and you're just trying way too hard to prove otherwise.

I heard the whole part about 'my friends call me Flicka" I never heard her being insistent on being called that. As far as having a nickname that is the same as the name of a famous fictional horse why is that so bad? Horses are beautiful, graceful animals, it's not like her nickname is toad or boogie (ewww) or anything really gross.

As someone with dreads in my offspring I have to say I hate them and don't get the point but I will defend anyone's right to wear them. I certainly don't see them as a reason to put someone down indefinitely after one episode where all her mistakes were featured. This girl is got to be at least a little bit tough if she is the captain of a roller derby team, even if that is all fake like pro-wrestling it is still a rough and tumble game and takes some physical skills. Getting tattoos is no picnic either, not that I have any but all my friends that have them, guys included, say they hurt like a bitch.
