3-12 "Tell Him Something Pretty" 2006.08.27

Deadwood turns out to vote; Alma makes a deal; Utter receives one body for Hearst, who demands to see another.

Am I the only one who feels a wee bit ripped-off? Maybe I need to rewatch, but...

?????

You know?

This, I suppose, concludes the kinder/gentler Al portion of our discussion.

That said, if this was the end, if the movies never get made, I can live with that. I'll miss the characters, and I hope I get to see what they would move on to next. But there were no agonizing cliffhangers, and this felt more like acceptable closure than I had any reason to expect.

Well... huh. That was anti-climactic.

Still shed a couple tears, though. R.I.P. Jen.

I know Hearst is the main villain, but Cy was particularly despicable tonight. He's the one character I'm not going to miss.

It's over. Damn good episode, but so much more could have been done. So many more stories were left to tell. It felt incomplete. That big, final stain that Al was cleaning up at the end of the episode represents in my mind, the big, fucking gap in HBO's programming now that the best is gone.

That was it? All that tension, all that build up, and 150 chung kuo cocksuckas, and we end with not even a scuffle? I feel totally cheated!

No Gladys you're not. But I have the feeling that has more to do with the fact that this was not shot as a series finale but a season finale.

I still can't believe they cancelled this show.

Cocksuckers.

Oh god, when Langrishe talked about what could they do to not have to be cancelled!!!!

I'm just, destroyed. I know it's TV, but it's the best acted and written TV in maybe forever. And the way they seem to be acting like they didn't cancel it! At least at the end of SFU I knew it was the end. This feels like robbery. I'm going to gather some thoughts, regroup, cry and drink some more before I post again. RIP Jen. Fuck you Hearst, get out, good riddance.

UNFUCKINGBELIEVABLE.

Hearst and the Pinkertons hover over Al, demanding that he open the casket to reveal the dead whore within. Bullock and Utter, both fully clenched outside the door, await the results, clearly praying they do not hear a gunshot, and...

HBO CUTS THE FUCK OUT!

I rant and rave like the drunkest Deadwoodian, to no avail. Black screen of death greets me. Finally, two long minutes later, the best show on TV returns. Al is out on the balcony, still alive praise Jesus, and Hearst and the Pinkies file out. Obviously Georgie bought the sham but...

Could someone please fill me the fuck in on what transpired in those two dead minutes? My heart just can't take this. NYC TIME WARNER SUCKS.

Unless they come out with the movies, this has to be one to the worst anti-climatic endings of any show I have seen. I hope in the supposed movie that Hearst get what he deserves. Someone in this episode needed to be a martyr and stand up to Hearst and shoot him between the eyes.

Needless to say, I am disappointed.

Thank god I know we get 4 more hours via a mini-series. Because there are just too many threads left hanging here. All those factions in camp have to come into open conflict.

But I'm impressed with the return of murderous, ruthless Al -- a man who'll kill the innocent when it's necessary. I don't like him as much after what he did, but he's more realistic.

Was anyone else disappointed with Hawkeye? Between Daniel Day-Lewis and Alan Alda, I was expecting someone more compelling with a name like that.

Why would anyone like Alma want to stay in Deadwood after selling her mine? Bullock is married and committed to staying that way. The camp is a pit where she has few friends and none of her own sort. Why WOULD she want to stay? It would have been more realistic to leave and hire her own private army to protect her interests.

Dear sweet God, I'm all sweating and sad now. My favorite show is gone!

And something happened at 9:49 and the video froze up and we didn't see what happened for like two minutes! It was just when Al went to open up the coffin. What happened?

But so sad, poor Jan. I suspected it coming from the previouslies, but it was still terribly sad.

I want a fourth season! Protest! Swedgin!

You're not the only one. Mr. Babe and I looked at each other at the close of the last scene and said WTF??? That's it for the big build-up all season -- Alma sells out? A whore gets killed? The men brought in by Wu and Hawkeye milling around aimlessly as Hearst and his goons ride out of town? I realize this was not intended to be the series finale at the time it was written/filmed, but it wasn't satisfying as a season finale either.

I absolutely cannot believe that Al actually killed Jen. I don't understand WHY he would placate Hearst, and agree to the killing of the whore that shot him. In reality, that killing solved nothing. Alma sold her mine, so the Bank of Deadwood would probably be no more. Bullock (And likely Starr,) lost the elections, and Hearst is leaving town. Did ANYTHING turn out as planned?

I was greatly hoping that the killing of Jen was all a prop, an act, set up with props supplied by Jack Langrishe. I still am not sure that that is not the case. Al would put up more of a protest than to allow Hearst to dictate the murder of one of his own, whore or not.

I'd like to tell HBO "something pretty.."

Arrrrgggghhhh!!

and Huh?

I'll have to rewatch it, since I'm scratching my head over what happened. So much for Al's newfound nobleness of character. Poor, poor Jen and Johnny.

I was hoping the theater troup would finally do something useful, like use their skills with makeup and lighting and other theatrical tricks to make Jen just look dead.

Alma sells her claim to Hearst
Al kills Jen in place of Trixie
Voting is inconclusive
Cy kills Leon
Joanie and Jane spoon
No fighting ensues
Hearst leaves town

All righty, then. Now we know for sure that the cancellation came after Season 3 was completed because there's no way this was a series finale. And Earl Brown was right - there are lots of unanswered questions and incomplete storylines.

Still great, though. And the scene of Clench walking down the thoroughfare at the end left me with a feeling of "No! Don't leave!!"

They're all still there - AND NOW WE'RE NOT! :-(

I don't know what's happening on the Emmys, but I know I just watched the best episode of the best show on television.

F*** HBO, Time Warner, and whoever else has pissed me off in the past hour.

This was a classic ep... perhaps my favorite in three seasons. All it needed was a little Doc.

It started with a bang. Utter was magnificent at Heart's door, magnificent in the thoroughfare, and hilarious at the Gem and Chez Clench.

Gerald McRaney finished off what has to be a Emmy winning performance on this show. I almost can't believe" Major Dad" was that good.

If I give GM props, then I would be wrong to forget about Powers Boothe. Not too many people can play a heartless prick like he did. So he calls her stupid in public and Janine in private?

Brian Cox saved his best for last. So did John Hawkes and Sean Bridgers for that matter.

Ian McShane... what else can be said about him? He's the best. EVER. I loved how he kept putting up with Johnny's sh*t despite the fact Johnny didn't realize he was just as upset about killing the girl. Tonight was another wonderful example of the relationship between Dan and Al. They know each other like clockwork.

Nigger General is back! And voting! And taking care of Steve? I always loved "The Whittler" and he was great tonight. I'm glad he knows the 15th amendment.

Clench, Alma, Joanie, CJ, Aunt Lou, Richardson, E.B., Nuttall, Harry Manning, and Hawkeye(!)... this show and ep were simply wonderful.

Oh, BTW, F*ck HBO.

If Bullock looked at me the way he looked at Alma in that last scene, I'd stay too. *swoons*

I can't wait for the two hour movies, because this cannot be the end.

Oh, and I just love Jane and Joanie.

Alma doesn't really have anywhere else to go. Her reputation in Philadelphia or wherever she came from has been besmirched by her father's own reputation and by Brom Garrett's family. In last season's finale, her sololiquy stated her reasons for staying...because the man she loves is in Deadwood. She knew he was married and planned on staying that way. But she knew that she would have to be content with just being in the same town as he.

My two teenage sons decided to have a big flippin' argument right in the middle of the episode, so my first viewing was extremely disjointed. I am reserving judgment until my second viewing at 11:00 p.m.

I have a heavy heart. In some strange way, this episode truly felt like the end, whether intended or not. Life doesn't tie itself up in neat packages, with all contents inventoried. Deadwood is dead. Long live Deadwood.

I thought that this episode was kinda anticlimactic as well, but I think it was as many have stated here- it wasn't meant to be the grand finale. I still can't believe there wasn't some sort of big throwdown...talk about ending with a whimper instead of a bang! At least I was fortunate in that my cable didn't freeze up! But I was most annoyed at the tardy start time.

Lots of funny throwaway lines in this otherwise sad and downbeat eppy...I got a chuckle out of all the blank stares when Al stated that he's see them all in heaven, or something like that (don't remember the exact dialogue), and the shit-stirrer had some funny moments too.

Gotta give props to Johnny for standing up for himself, even staring down Al, which I wouldn't have imagined last season.

I can't believe that Hearst wouldn't anticipate Al doing something like the whore switch, and falling for it. He's an evil megalomaniac, but he's not stupid! Oh well.

I dropped Showtime after they unceremoniously dumped Dead Like Me, and I want to do the same for HBO...but I'm gonna wait until the possiblilty of the two-hour episodes (probably will actually only be an hour and a half, by HBO standards) is absolutely ruled out before I do so.

The sheer unfinished-ness of all Deadwood's business was awful. For the first time ever I literally wanted to throw myself on the floor and cry until HBO gave me another episode.

And why, oh why, didn't Cy and Leon kill each other? Con could have taken the Bella Union into a sitcom spinoff...

This is definitely the most disappointing of the three season finales. This season had a great start, but what a lack-luster finish. After all of the build-up, I wanted something more than a minor character being whacked to scam the main villain. It's like David Milch and David Chase put their heads together and said, "Let's see what we can do to titilate the viewers without giving them a good banging before we leave."

I'm really done with HBO. Deadwood and The Sopranos can sit on my shelves, but I'll not give them one more dime.
