I think a lot of people are going to be shocked by Jason Street's injury. Because they're going to think it's Smash who's getting injured because Boobie got injured in the book and the movie.

But the big giveaway is Sacharen, no way a backup QB is featured so prominently on the show unless he was getting a big storyline.

Here's a spoiler: They lose.

If you're talking about the first game, they win. Behind Sacharen's Tom Brady-like performance.

I was just going by the big game at the end of the movie. And trying to be cute and funny. Didn't it work??

Oh, good one! Hahaha.

I guess Jason's injury is the only big spoiler at this point. I guess Tyra kissing Jason is a bit of a spoiler.

Does anyone know how this show is going to work? Is it just going to cover one football season? How strict is it going to adhere to the real lives of the players and their families, and how much is going to be pure fiction?

I think I read somewhere (looking for link) that it will cover more than just the football season. And it will be fictional. They changed the name of the town to a fictional one, so they have a lot more liberties. They also placed the show in the present while the book and movie were in 1988.

ETA: I can't find the article so I must have imagined it!

I guess this means the second season, because in an article it was clearly noted that the last episode of season 1 will be the last football game of the year for the Panthers.

Street's injury didn't surprise me at all. The show opens with the backup quarterback. When I got the screener of the pilot, I spent the whole time wondering what was going to happen to Street. I specked injuries or getting kicked off the team for drugs or some other reason. But it was obvious that the backup was the one being featured.

You know it was really a sports cliche. But it was well done and I liked it and the scene at the end where they all go to the hospital... it was classy.

All I can say is I really don't care how improabable or ridiculous it is, I want Jason Street back in action by episode 5. Look if T-Bag can still be alive after losing like 6 pints of blood or Dr. Sara can survive an OD in Prison Break Jason Street making a miraculous recovery isn't that far off. It's television after all.

I know we're supposed to root for the underdog backup but I don't care I just can't get behind Saracen like I can for Jason Street.

Oh, absolutely! The second I found out he was the backup QB I thought, "Good night, Street." Which is sad because I love Street, too.

Casting description from Starz Casting for episode 1.04, Git 'Er Done:

[CONNOR HAYES] Male, 20s, Caucasian, he is an educated, young businessman in nice clothes. While in town on business, he meets and becomes involved briefly with 17 year old Tyra...RECURRING GUEST STAR.

Another casting description for what they're also calling 1.04 but the episode title is Who's Your Daddy:

[HERC] Male, late 20's to early 30's, All Ethnicities. Please submit disabled/non-disabled actors. The character is on a Quadriplegic Rugby Team. He must have a strong upper body. He is challenging with an attitude but funny and a great guy at the same time. He is the antithesis of an All American football player. RECURRING COSTAR, POSSIBLE GUEST STAR.

And this is an older one for episode 1.02 Eyes Wide Open:

[RAY "VOODOO" TATOM] Male, African American, Must be 18-23 years old to play younger, Must be at least 6'2" with a large frame and muscular, athletic physique. This quarterback is the "ringer" the Football Boosters are looking to recruit to replace 2nd stringer Saracen. Ray is quiet and soft-spoken with a dark energy. Recurring, Costar-possible Guest Star.

[BOBBY "BULL" REYES] Male, Latino, Must be 18-23 years old to play younger, Approximately 5'7" and 155 pounds of lean muscle. Bobby is the Panther football team's Strong Safety. He is as fast, mean, and unpredictable as a bull. A notorious shit-talker and instigator who loves trouble, picks on people, and starts fights with guys twice his size, Bobby loves the attention all of this brings. Recurring, Costar-possible Guest Star.

[JUDITH LEVINE] Female, Caucasian, Maybe Jewish, 40ish, Educated. She is an English teacher at the high school and does not fit into the Dillon townswoman mold. Recurring, Costar-possible Guest Star

Awesome, thanks for the spoilers HungryHippo. I'm glad they're casting some defensive players too.

Kinda sounds like a "Troy Polamalu" type.

My question -- and since I haven't yet seen a speculation thread -- is what will happen to this show after the first season or so. Let's say the majority of the characters are in their junior year -- that gives them two years or so if they make the football season the backdrop of the entire year. Will they change the cast in two years? Go off to college somehow?

They had the same dillema in "The White Shadow". My guess is they'll do what the WS did and replace the cast (I hope this doesen't happen for at least 3 seasons).

I don't think there's any chance of switching the setting to college because high school football is what the show is about.

The scenario I'm hoping for is that in season 4 they'll have to lose most of the teen characters but I hope they keep Jason as a assistant coach on the team, Lyla will be living with Jason and hopefully Julie will stay. Personally I'm hoping every teen on the show is really stupid so they'll have to repeat a grade to keep them on the show.

I already like this guy and I hope he becomes the quarterback. I just don't like Saracen and besides that you can't go wrong with a Quarterback nicknamed "Voodoo".

Doubtful, since they would be booted off the team in such a case.

I forgot to mention but after reading this part of the article in the Scott Porter thread;

In the opening episode, his character faces a major life crisis. Already, Porter says, he's preparing for the scenes that will follow. "It could be that everything he has loved in his life is disappearing."

and this;

If their headed towards making Jason like Kevin Girardi from Joan of Arcadia and have him be in a wheelchair I'm going to be really pissed.

And if they have Lyla quit cheerleading I may have to switch over to Gilmore Girls. Okay that's a lie but you get my point.

I doubt that they will keep Jason off the field for too long, but this is an interesting storyline to explore, both as a personal and as an athletic viewpoint. How does one reconcile such a serious injury with the future?

Speaking as an athlete who is injured in a way that prevents me from fully doing what I want to when I swim, it's not easy. Not easy at all.

From a side I read for Episode Five "Get'er Done", Jason is still in the hospital.

Also there was an end of a scene involving Lyla and Tim in his bedroom.

There's something about reading spoilers for this show that is exciting and terrifying at the same time. This is the latter.

Why though? To me I think Jason being in a wheelchair would be interesiting. It's a very realistic show, and Jason will be in the hosptial, and then a wheelchair for a good amount of the season, and maybe even next season. Think of it this way, his injury means he isn't leaving the show any time soon. Which answers the question about the characters leaving. For me I can Jason staying as a couch for the remainder of the series, I can't see Lyla sticking around for that long, and I wouldn't mind her going, she just annoyed me. I can see Julie staying home to save money for parents, she'll probably go to a local college. I can see Tim or Smash not being able to get a full ride somewhere, so they decide to say home, but I can also see one of them getting the full ride and leaving. I can see Tyra almost making it out of the town, but either getting pregnant, or something else happening to her that keeps her in town. I can even see her having a relationship with Jason adter Lyla leaves. So I can see Julie, Tyra, and Jason staying for the whole series. And probably one more. We'll see! Lets hope it gets the chance!

I'm fine if it's just for this season but I don't want it to be permanent. Yes, the show's realistic but it's still a tv show and tv shows more than movies have to be crowd pleasers. Also I think one of the main characters being crippled in the pilot episode is a lot to take in. I wish this was planned for the season 1 finale.

Think of it this way, his injury means he isn't like the show any time soon.

I don't quite understand what you're saying here.

I think a storyline where Jason rehabs and starts a comeback in season 2 is too good a storyline to waste. Just keeping him on the bench for the whole series is a waste and also boring. Plus I feel in a lot of ways that Scott Porter's the face of this show (maybe besides KC) so I'm a bit dissapointed he won't be the QB for who knows how long.

Personally I hope this core group stays together for about 3 years, I think that's reasonable after that I'd be open to turnover. You make a good point about Julie and since she's the coach's daughter she would still have a connection to the HS football team. It's not unlike the dillema with Prison Break now that they've broken out of the prison.

I'm not seeing an especially long run for this show (I see it having a succesful 5-6 season run) but if they continue to cast good actors like they have so far who knows.

I can't see Lyla sticking around for that long, and I wouldn't mind her going, she just annoyed me.

I have a feeling this is going to be a consensus feeling after the pilot airs.

ETA: One point of clairification; when that girl tells Saracen; "Now that your first string tell me what you like and I'll provide it" she's talking about blowjobs right?

See this is why it's better to have the show in Dillon than in Odessa. They'd get a ton of mail for that. "Dear NBC, our girls do not give blowjobs to the starting quarterbacks!!!!!!"

No matter how he ends up, he is going to have to go to a rehab facility before he does anything else. It sounds like the role they are casting is for one of the other rehab patients.
