Rachel and Monica went to high school together, not college, so there was a common link there. The references to the past make sense in the context of two old best friends being the two main characters. Mel mentioned that football dude from her past (Trey?), and the Jaleel White character was also a friend. As far as we saw, the only constant in Mel's life from her school years was Derwin, and he did bitch about that football guy who rescued Mel after the first breakup.
Okay, high school. The point is, there was evidence that the two, all six of them in fact, knew other people outside of each other, and they would often reference people from back in the day.
Clearly, Mel's life revolved around Derwin, but there was never a mention of her having friends and established relationships from her past, not one homegirl from school or back home that she'd communicate with from time to time. Other than that episode when she called Derwin about Lashy McMurphy (I believe that was the name), she never really referenced anyone from back home or school. And that Lashy person wasn't even a friend, she was clearly some inside joke/person Mel and Derwin made fun of on campus. Trey, on the other hand, was someone she and Derwin both knew from the football team and a guy she tutored, while Jaleel was a study partner she met in San Diego.
I'm not saying she needed a BFF. Now that me and the rest of my closest friends are out of undergrad and some of us are in grad school, working fulltime jobs, starting families, etc., it's next to impossible for us to chit chat like we used to, but we still find time to call once in a while. If nothing else, just make sure we're still alive and kicking. Mel never received a call or a text or anything from someone wanting to know how she was adjusting to life/school out in San Diego. Not a big deal though, just something that bothered me, right along with Derwin's phantom family, and Melanie progressing through medical school despite her never being there.
I was always under the assumption that Derwin's parents were a) dead or b) one's dead and the other's whereabouts are unknown. I guess it's safe to say that his grandmother raised him since he's always talking about her, but I came up with the death assumption because when he and Mel had that huge fight about the baby, and she was telling him how her parents spoke to her as if she were a child, he said "at least you have a mommy & daddy."
I remember that. I, too, think he was raised by his grandmother, and as a result, I thought maybe his mom lost costudy due to neglect or drug use, or maybe both. As far as his dad, I figured he was maybe another Punk Ass Chauncey. But they never really mentioned it, other than that telling moment you mentioned above about having a mom and dad, so you were left to just guess. Again, no big deal, just bothers me, especially when I'm watching the reruns.
