[Zoned Out]

This would be the place to discuss Calleigh and all her southern glory. I liked this character when the show first started, but lately she has become rather stiff and blah and what with the ridiculousness of most of the rest of the characters, I just can't stomach this show very often anymore.

Calleigh is played by Emily Procter who I first saw on The West Wing.

Calleigh's become such a bore lately. The only time we see glimpses of the old Calleigh is when she's around Delko, of course, that rarely happens, because this show is like Catholicism: if it feels good, don't do it.

I usually don't like her when she's around Ryan. Probably because he's such an asshat.

Awww, now don't go knocking our southern speak, there's something to be said for a group of people that can eliminate half the syllables any other person would have in a sentence.

Oh I'm not knocking the accent, BlueFawn. I am from the Ozarks and have quite an accent myself. I just think she sounds really stilted.

As someone who has only been watching for about 3 months, Calleigh is my least favorite character of all. Maybe she had personality initially, but so far, in the episodes I've seen she's like an android with too much makeup. Either that, or she's been Botoxed to death. Seriously, I've never seen her have any kind of expression whatsoever. Sometimes I find it funny, other times it just bugs me.

Calleigh used to smile and laugh a lot during the first two seasons. In fact, it was weird not to see her laughing. Then the actress and the producers for some reason decided it would be cool to turn her into a robot.

Saw an episode last night in which she actually smiled and laughed a couple of times. For the first time I realized how extremely attractive she is. I wish they'd let her show that side of herself more.

As a NC native, I'd say that yeah, the accent is pretty dead on. She's from Raleigh and went to East Carolina University. She comes back to town every now and then and sounds exactly like she does on the show.

Saw Emily's return on the West Wing recently and was reminded of how much I once loved her. As Ainsley she exuded warmth, intelligence and spunk, not to mention she was just plain hot. Calleigh, on the other hand, seems wooden and reserved, quiet and boring. Granted, watching your old boyfriend off himself in front of you might put the kibosh on excessive revelry, but geez, she could smile once in a while.

The only time she ever smiles is in episodes where she gets to go out with a guy. The rest of the time she's like a female version of Data. I can always tell in her first scene if Callie is going to get lucky in that episode.

And I hated her histerical behaviour when Eric asked her to climb into the dumpster and get the evidence out (she allegedly hates ants). I mean, those people work with body parts DAILY and she gets histerical if she has to deal with a few ants?

When she laughs and smiles - and especially when she is flirting - she is stunning.

I had heard, and I don't know how accurate this is, that she was told to tone down her Southern accent. And unfortunately for her, the only way she seems to be able to do that is by using a more wooden delivery, because her accent is even more pronounced when she's perky and upbeat.

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with her having a strong Southern accent. I mean, her character is supposed to be from the deep South.

Actually, I remember one of the CSI showrunners talking about how they would talk to CSIs and despite all the disgusting things they see on a regular basis, every CSI has that one thing they really can't stand. That's why there was an ep of CSI with Sara being disgusted by saliva and making Warrick do the testing. To most people, saliva isn't half as gross as other stuff they handle, but an actual CSI had mentioned having this same issue while they were researching the show. That kind of thing is actually not as unrealistic as you'd think.

I don't either. I would much prefer an accent to the wooden delivery. I understand that lots of folk associate southern accents with uneducated hicks, but I thought it was nice that TPTB wanted to show a smart, southern woman. There aren't too many on TV (and there are TONS in real life). The idea of her character is great. But the execution (the acting, the writing, the directing) just fall flat for me.

I think Southern accents come across thicker when taped, perhaps that's why they would want her to "tone it down." Lord, the few times I've heard my voice recorded it even made me cringe.

You know, I'm watching the episode last night on A&E where Boa Vista thinks she's pregnant and there's that scene where she's whining about 'having the flu' to Calleigh and how it's worse in the morning. There's a look on Calleigh's face like she totally assimilated what was really going on even though all she offered was some bland comment about 'chicken soup'. Anyway, I finally decided that's the reason I like the character so much. She just absorbs things and doesn't give much away, particularly during crime scenes. There's no doubt in my mind that she knows everything that's going on around her and just doesn't get involved with it unless she has to. She probably knows all about Delko and Boa Vista and will pull that out of her hat if she ever needs to in the future. I sometimes wonder if it's some kind of defense mechanism for the character, developed so that her job doesn't overwhelm her. (Hey, one has to get pleasure from the small moments in this show in order to keep watching it because the overall picture is just gawd awful. She's the only reason I watch it at all.)

I'd say Calleigh and Delko are the only characters who've been developed gracefully and I think it has more to do with the actors than the writers. Calleigh is particularly complex to the point where you hope they never give her any storylines because you know the writers are going to mess her up.

Strangely, I've seen fanfic writers tackle her complexities in amazing ways. Sad when fanfic writers surpass the real writers.

For me as fan-fic writer Calleigh Duquesne always materializes as the girl-friend from next door, the girl you can rely on. She's bubbly, out-going and always there whenever someone needs her. Pairing her romantically with someone is more difficult.
Anyway, I like her character too. And thank God her voice changed (it "matured") compared to the first season where it was so high.

Where is Calliegh from in the show? I wanna say Louisiana based on the episode where her dad came to town, but I am not for sure.

Emily Procter was given a scrapbook of all the fanfic and fanart out there between her character and that of Horatio Crane for Xmas a few years back.

I just thought I'd throw that out there.
