Yay! I get to start the Phyllis thread!

Discuss what it's like to try on Phyllis' pants here.

Oh, and what does her boyfriend do again?

Phyllis is one of my favorite teritary charcters (along wth Kevin and Stanley). I have to admit that there was one scene where i despised the character of Phyllis. It was during "Boys and Girls" when she said "I think we are happy with the balance we have here" [sic]. I lost some respect for her at some point. I think it is because it make her character seem the slightest bit pathetic. But seriously, wasnt not pathetic about working in a paper manufacturing company?

Do you think she doodles on her papers:
"Phyllis Vance, Vance Refrigeration"?

Love her! My fave moment with her was in Boys and Girls and when she totally smiled when Jan brought up clothes. Phyllis loves her some girl talk! hee...

Ever since she started dancing to "Ryan started the fire!", I've thought she was kind of... sexy, you know, in that way that people you know IRL, who aren't particularly physically attractive, seem sexy to you once you get to know them.

Do I remember correctly that Phyllis (the actress) was a burlesque dancer at one point?

Yup, Argillus, she was, at least according to a newspaper article. She also does a fun little dance during the Xmas episode. You could see she had a good technique, even if she isn't in top condition anymore. And I mean that as lovingly as I can....

I can totally see what you mean about that sexiness, kat_may. I think she's really cute and funny and I just love her. She's my favorite of the tertiary characters.

Aw, that was my favorite line of the whole episode! I love Phyllis, so maybe this is just excuse-making, but I thought the women's mass-attack on Jan was mean but justifiable (in their view, anyway). Jan clearly didn't think much of the women's more domestic- and personal-oriented goals, and perhaps insulted their intelligence a little with the explanation of sports metaphors. If the women were generally feeling belittled, it makes sense that they'd latch on to Jan's one indiscretion in order to even the playing field, so to speak.

Besides, Phyllis was essentially using Jan's own corporate-speak back at her, so whoo! Perhaps it wasn't admirable, but hell, none of these characters are 100% admirable.

I don't have anything against Phyllis for saying they're happy with the balance they've struck. I'm not convinced she was part of Kelly's and Angela's little attack on Jan, either. That line was just something Phyllis would say, very blithely and meaning no harm, the way she told Michael, "Oh, we wouldn't, we love Stevie Wonder." Stating her mind, but maybe not at the most opportune time or with the best choice of words. She's too happy-go-lucky to make snide remarks.

Phyllis is great. They could easily have cast her as a pathetic, despondent woman with no one to go home to - but she's none of those things.

Yes. I've been trying to figure out exactly what it is that makes Phyllis so appealing to me, and I think a lot of it is that she's very average, but unlike the other "normal" people in the office (basically, Jim, Pam, Toby, Stanley, and Oscar--the folks who aren't particularly quirky), she seems generally very happy.

Stanley's hilarious, but he's very sarcastic and negative. Oscar's...well, he's rather dull in my opinion. Toby's a total downer--he just seems so downtrodden and depressed. Jim and Pam both clearly hate their jobs, and they have the obvious relationship woes.

But Phyllis...she's just happy. Occasionally Michael insults her or Angela treats her kind of badly, and she's obviously not happy at those moments, but she seems to get over them pretty quickly. She's a bit looser than the other folks--she dances in The Fire and Booze Cruise, and sings Karaoke at Jim's party. She makes little jokes occasionally ("Are you calling me a ho?"). She's got a boyfriend who she clearly likes a lot (she seemed very proud when she introduced him at the Christmas party) and who's obviously very fond of her (have you ever seen anyone so piled with Valentine's Day gifts). She's happy.

I'm not suggesting there's anything at all bad about all the negativity from everyone else--that's what the show's about, really. People should be negative--the show's about all the drags of working in a boring office with an incompetent and moronic boss; it's supposed to be negative, and that's why it's funny. But to me, Phyllis seems like sort of a bright light in a lot of darkness. She just makes me happy, and I'm thinking it's because she's happy.

Am I making any sense? I could be talking out of my ass.

I agree wholeheartedly. Phyllis is one of my favorite characters. She is so real its almost scary...both how she is written and the actress who brings her to life. I've known lots of Phyllis's in my life and its so refreshing to see one on tv.

I adore Phyllis. She seems genuinely good and kind. I want to see her happy, you know? When Angela or Michael get down on her I feel for her. And to think the actress wasn't even originally an actress - that's a pretty amazing feat. Go Phyllis! Flonkerton champ!

I like scenes with Phyllis and Dwight. Is it the Dundees episode where she gets really ticked with him for coming into the women's washroom and just shoves him right out of there? I also liked the Barbeque episode, where she takes Dwight aside and explains it isn't really a surprise party for Michael.

In one of Phyllis' talking heads in Boys and Girls ("I love girl talk"), I remember just looking at the screen and seeing her face just glowing, and I thought, Awww! I love Phyllis. She just has this quiet joy about her, which is something I completely aspire to.

The Office needs a happy character to contrast with all the misery going on in there. IRL, there are indeed average people, who have average office jobs, who are content and are not longing for more. I think that's what Phyllis meant when she said she was happy with the balance she had struck. Phyllis says what she means and means what she says. The world has lots of Phyllis' and I for one think we are better off for it.

Thanks, Phyllis for striking a blow on tv for content, bespeckled fat ladies across America!

Another Office fan with serious love for Phyllis. She had me in the palm of her hand during "Office Olympics," and sealed the deal with her rendition of "Here I Go Again" during the karaoke party episode. I was so mad at Michael for making her feel bad about the oven mitt!!

I'd like to see a Phyllis-centric episode. Maybe one where Oscar comes out to her? I think I'd trust her more than anyone else in the office.

i'm just guessing that no little boy or girl says I wanna grow up and work at the paper company.

not trying to be judgmental - I've had plenty of non-glamorous jobs. No child dreams of growing up and working in property management, for example.

What I lvoe about Phyllis is that she's always so "put together." Outfit? fabulous. Hair and makeup? fabulous. I think she just gets better as the show goes on.

I agree eagle, she was so sweet in Boys and Girls about loving girl talk. I also love BVVR. He's so sweet. BTW, the the title of this thread.

Remember Michael's boner joke in Sexual Harassment? And Phyllis' priceless response? Haha.

While the beastly Olympics were on, I started pining over my recorded episodes. On one of those, Jan walks to the elevator on the Dunder-Mifflin floor, and you can see Vance Refrigeration's office door right there, across the foyer. I was surprised that BVVR was just across the hall each day; I never caught it.

So I started thinking about Valentine's Day and that "whole garden" that Bob sent Phyllis... not to mention that gi-normous bear that had to be lugged out... and I was oddly intrigued.

Having watched more of the Season 1 DVD this weekend, I was noticing how much Phyllis really has "come alive" over this second season. She's still not exactly a glamour queen, but she was verrrry frumpy in Season 1. Her hair was just kind of straight and flat, and she hardly wore any makeup. This year, her hair is quite nicely curled and her face looks brighter, especially in the Christmas Party episode (when we were first introduced to BVVR...coincidence?).

She's totally going to kick Angela's ass one of these days, and it's going to be awesome. In The Alliance, Michael made a rude comment about the party decorations, and Angela immediately blamed Phyllis for choosing red streamers (not that she would have been allowed to choose "whorish" green!), and Phyllis gave the greatest little exasperated "You're such a..." Woot! Finish it, Phyllis!

Just re-watched "sexual harassment" and at one point Toby tells the group that if anyone is in an office relationship they should disclose it to HR. Phyllis raises her hand and says something like "Even if it was a one night stand?" and Jim gives the camera a look.

::blinks:: Any guesses? :)

Oh my god. I've just realized that I crossed the line into complete and utter Office geek, because I actually know this answer. In "The Carpet", Michael says that Todd Packer once hooked up with every woman in the office, as a joke. I'm fairly certain that Phyllis' one night stand was with Todd Packer.

Ewwwwwwwwwww. Which makes his mean comments to Phyllis in that episode even more shitty. She becomes the butt of his jokes when he's telling the story about some woman who's unattractive, and he points at Phyllis, and then Kevin says her name - at which point Michael calls Kevin out for crossing the line.

I don't think we actually know that Phyllis slept with Packer. Do we know how long Phyllis has worked there? It's possible that when Packer hooked up with all the women in the office, she wasn't working there yet. I'd like to think that, anyway, because I love Phyllis and Packer is just...ewwww.

We don't know it for sure, but based on the fact that this show is pretty good about continuity, and Michael said Packer nailed EVERY girl in the office, I'm feeling pretty confident that he's the one Phyllis had the one night stand with.

I emailed Jenna to ask her the answer. Maybe we'll get lucky and she'll reply, or answer it in a blog.
