I adore Sam, I do; the writers have done a good job of keeping the flambe'd Joey Potter on his mind, whereas other shows would have had him getting it on with Metallicar by the end of the episode. Plus, JP just rocks the role so I'm happy any time he's onscreen.

and do try to keep at least a scrap of clothing on, will you?
Aw, does he have to?
I was less than enamoured with Sam to begin with, and for that I blame the blinding hotness of his older brother. I find I'm liking him more and more as the series goes on though, and JP really seems to be growing into the role. I enjoy him playing 'good cop' to Dean's 'bad cop', and he gets all tender and cute whilst trying to wangle information out of the girl of the week. Bless.

Jared just plays off Jensen so well. So, Sam is different from Dean, but able to hold his own. Now, as much as I love Dean, I also love it when Sam gives him a hard time. (Like in DITW, when Andrea shot Dean down. Silly girl.) Sam's amusement was too funny. And Jared delivered that "Name three children you even know," line perfectly. Still makes me chuckle.

I myself was too blinded by Dean to notice poor Sam at first. But he sort of started demanding my attention. Now, I really like him. Well, love, okay.
Seconding the above.
Having seen JP on Gilmore Girls and having hated the character, I had no great expectations. Damn, was I surprised.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not denying the blinding hotness of Dean, but I guess it's just something about Jared's portrayal of Sam that just draws me in.

And, because it can't be said enough, I can't believe how radically my opinion of JP has been transformed by this show. While playing the horrifically inconsistently written Dean on GG, I thought he was neither attractive nor remotely talented. Now I think he's an extremely likeable and natural actor who's also one of the most attractive, drool-worthy men on TV!

I like Sam aka CuteDean. I like that he still mourns his dead girlfriend and hasn't forgotten her (Clark Kent, I'm looking at you).

Anyway, I'll start watching the show next week, and I already have a question regarding Sam... during the time he was in college, did he lose all contact with his brother or were they in good terms. This will make a great difference in my love or hate the character.

Actually we're not really sure yet. We know that his father told him that if he left, never to come back. But, and someone correct me if I am forgetting something, we haven't really had it confirmed whether Sam and Dean had NO contact during the 4 years.
However, my guess is that if they did have contact, it certainly wasn't regular contact. And also, it may not have been Sam's choice, if Dean sided with their dad.

In the pilot, it's mentioned that Sam and Dean have not spoken for two years. We are also told that PapaDean told Sam that if he left, he couldn't come back. At the same time, Sam is a senior in college looking at Law School, so he's been in college for 4 years (3 if he accelerated).
That presents two possible events:
(1) Sam studied locally and then transferred to Stanford in his junior year. This seems a little implausible given the Winchester line of work. To get that many credits under his belt by the age he would have had to have been requires staying in one place and actually attending a school.
(2) Sam started at Stanford as a freshman and there was some kind of fallout between the two brothers around year two and thus, the break in communication.
There is a third possible answer and that is that the writers were on crack and, like other timelines in this show, they screwed up and we'll never have it answered.

Sam was in college for four years and, according to Dean, they hadn't hadn't see each other the last two. But I don't think Sam told his family to leave him alone or anything. Dad seemed to cut him off, with telling him, "If you go to college, don't come back." And, if I had to fanwank it, I think that, after trying to keep in touch the first two years, Dean probably decided to back off and let Sam really try this normalcy kick he was on. Making contact would've meant pulling Sam back into the life, even if in a small way. I mean, look what happened when Dean did go for a "visit".

So adorable, and such the little brother, trying to be strong for Dean and his Dad, when he was always overprotected. I bet it's hard for him being the baby of the family of such strong, macho guys.

But anyway, I think what sucked me into Sam is the gentle way he can speak to the females/victims, and get them to relax, with his soothing, calming voice. Its really quite effective, and has helped establish him as a totally different character than his brother, yet still are believable as brothers.

Jared's Dean was a pain, but Sam seems to be the typical baby brother.

Please tell me I'm not the only one old enough to remember that song??

I also love the fact that Sam is smart. However, I thought the pilot made him a little too smart. He got over a 170! He's going to Stanford! He's so smart they are going to give him a full ride! Even though it is only September and they aren't even accepting applications!

So far the mytharc is focused on him: mother and girlfriend were killed in his view, he has precognition and the story starts with him rejoining the hunt.
The interaction between the two brothers is great.

I guess each Winchester brother has his own issues and things to deal with, but I love how they care for each other.
I can't wait to see what happens in Scarecrow. Apparently the brothers have a huge fight.

They're great opposites, the brothers Dean. Hot!Dean is all snark and bravado, with a hidden vulnerability that we rarely see. Cute!Dean is all angsty, sensitive, intellectual and someone that frankly you kind of want to mother, with an inner strength that comes out when it's needed.
Anyway, back to Sammy. I go back and forth between drooling over him and wanting to wrap him in a blanket and give him some hot chocolate. Poor angsty Cute!Dean.
